A Three-pronged Approach to
Addressing the Drug Overdose Epidemic

By F. Gerard Moeller, M.D., professor, Virginia Commonwealth
University School of Medicine, and director of the
VCU Institute for Drug and Alcohol Studies
In a state where more people die from drug overdoses than automobile accidents, the need for drug addiction treatment has outpaced available treatment resources. The emergency room at VCU Medical Center routinely
sees multiple patients a day who have been brought there after a drug
overdose, yet there are few treatment options available. Many of the patients who overdose do so with the illicit drug heroin. However, according
to a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association, threequarte

flavornews@gmail.com

(continued) quarters of patients who tried heroin were introduced to

the drug through abuse of prescription pain medications. VCU Health
has approved development of two programs to begin to address the
drug overdose epidemic. Attacking the problem of prescription
opioids, the first part of the program will identify patients who are being treated for pain with opioids and who are at risk of abuse and overdose. The program will move those patients to other methods of pain
treatment. Those who have become addicted to pain medication will
be referred to a new outpatient substance abuse treatment clinic that
will be the primary referral source for patients with addictions who are
seen at VCU Medical Center. Additionally, we are working closely
with the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services to coordinate our addiction treatment programs with other programs in the
state. Lastly, since prescription pain medications have been a significant part of the addiction problem in the state, we have started a program to educate medical students on the risks of opioid use for chronic
pain treatment. We have also established an addiction medicine fellowship to train more specialists in treating patients with addictions.
Through the three-pronged approach of prevention, treatment and education, the drug overdose epidemic in Virginia is beginning to be addressed at Virginia Commonwealth University and VCU Health; however, it will take a statewide approach to effectively combat this epidemic.

Quilts to Raise Awareness for

Domestic Violence
Displayed Inside City Hall
Last month the City placed two quilts on display inside City Hall to
help raise awareness for domestic violence. The quilts are being displayed in honor of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month that
takes place during October. In 2002, Sheila Mandt, a survivor of domestic violence, led the Domestic Violence Quilt Project campaign,
and Attorney General Jerry Kilgore and actress Sissy Spacek served as
the Honorary Co-chairs. By designing quilt panels, the campaign enabled victims and survivors of domestic violence to express their emotions in a safe and anonymous manner. The two quilts on display are
part of a larger collection of quilts that are positioned in various locations around Virginia to help raise awareness. Richmond City Government issued a joint proclamation at a City Council meeting, proclaiming the month of October as Richmond Domestic Violence Awareness
Month. Residents were invited and encouraged to do their part to help
put an end to domestic violence.

Marvin Harris, CPA Receives A+ Rating!

Have you ever had a bad experience with your tax preparer? Do you ever feel like your questions go unanswered? Testimonial: A few weeks ago I was in need of a new tax preparer
and only had three (3) days to submit my 2015 taxes to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
I had filed an extension, but somehow my information was misplaced. As a small business
owner, I have been faced with so many challenges, but I refuse to give up (Im not a quitter!).
In talking with a good friend of mine, she suggested I give Mr. Harris a call. Hesitant to share
my dilemma over-the-phone, I asked if he had five minutes to meet with me in person. His
immediate response was, Absolutely! Come on over; Ill be waiting to assist you. Upon
arriving to his office (Highland Park area/beside Bank of America), he greeted me with a
smile and asked how he could
help. Within 24 hours my
taxes were done! Although he
was faced with a challenging
task in order to meet the deadline, his professional demeanor
never changed (very polite).
Additionally, he stayed in contact with me reassuring that
everything would be alright
and it was (perfect)! Not only
were my taxes prepared in an
expeditious manner, but because of his level of expertise in If you are seeking a tax preparer who is a Financial

DANCING @ PINE CAMP

BEST PET PHOTO

Hi! My name is BETTY ROBINSON WEEKS and I teach dance. Twenty

plus years ago, I was asked to teach a country line dance class at Pine Camp
Community Center. Some of those ladies are still with me today. We have a
blast; and they are like family! The class has evolved into a combination of
country, pop, latin, and urban/soul; but it doesnt really matter what kind of
music we are enjoyingjust so we are dancing! I have been told by many of
them that if it werent for line dance, they arent sure how they would have
gotten through their husbands illness, their family members passing, or any
of their life challenging moments. My husband, Mike Weeks, and I have been
teaching various forms of dance for those 20 plus years. We have traveled to
many areas of the country to teach, compete, and judge dance, and have loved
every aspect of bringing happiness into the life of our friends. We thank God,
feel truly blessed, and hope to continue this fun for many years to come!

PROVIDE US WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO

LAW ENFORCEMENT EFFORTS!
While effective community policing is based on relationships built on mutual trust and understanding, the Richmond Police Department opens its
doors to the community through our themed Academies and volunteering.
The Richmond Police Department offers a variety of themed Citizen Academies that are delivered to the diverse communities that we serve. The
classes are designed to provide the participants with information regarding
the internal workings of the department and for them to experience various
specialized units within the organization. The themed Academies provide
us with an opportunity to involve citizens in the Richmond Police Departments law enforcement efforts. It gives citizens a working knowledge of
the Richmond police departments mission, operations, policies, personnel,
and challenges. As a result, citizens become more familiar with the day-today operations of our police department and the actual role of the police.
Our goal is to provide a better understanding of the departments operations
and philosophies. The curriculum covers a variety of topics that range from
gun and drug use in the city to how a murder is investigated. Participants
also ride with officers, get a first-hand look at how the Division of Emergency Communications operates, and visit the firing range. Themed academy
graduates are eligible for the Neighborhood Assistance Officer and Volunteers in Policing programs. Our next Citizens Police Academy is scheduled
for January 11, 2017. For more information, please visit our website at

Last month while locating another grocery store to display our GOOD NEWSpapers, we stopped by the T-SHIRT STUDIO where we met Mr. Kamran
Shaikh, Manager. Although he was busy filling other orders and stated he could
design a shirt; however, it would not be ready until the following day, after
learning about Northside Vibes, he immediately stopped and designed a shirt
for our Editor-in-Chief on-the-spot! Additionally, he informed us hes from
three generations of newspaper publishers. After spending more time in his establishment and learning more about his passion for helping others, we recently received an email stating he was so inspired, he has decided to launch a wellneeded newspaper for his community! Were looking forward to collaborating
with him for we all could use more GOOD NEWS! Kamran, thank you for
exhibiting superb customer service! In addition to picking up a copy of Northside Vibes 16-page Special Edition at Martins Food Market in Carytown (3522
W. Cary Street) on Friday, November 4th, please be sure to stop by the T-Shirt
Studio located at 3037 W. Cary Street. Call Kamran @ (804) 340-0146, visit

Smiles We Encounter Daily Tollbooth Reps!
THANKS RMTA EMPLOYEES
LIZ PETERSON has been employed with RMTA for 3 years and enjoys interacting with her highway customers. No matter what day of the week (or
weekend) we stop to pay tolls, she and her fellow co-workers always greet us
with a smile. Ms. Peterson has even shared inspirational messages which result
in making our day as we embark upon daily challenges. Recently (early one
morning), we ran into Veronica (bottom right) who exhibited the same smile we
encounter when shes at work. Thanks RMTA for the OUTSTANDING SERVICES your employees provide to the public. KEEP SMILING LADIES!

The mission of the Richmond Metropolitan Transportation Authority (RMTA) is to
build and operate a variety of public facilities and offer public services, especially transportation related, within the Richmond metropolitan area, each of which is operated and
financed primarily by user fees. Our efforts are dedicated to the following constituents:
To our customers, we will provide safe, convenient, efficient facilities and excellent
customer service while maintaining the lowest feasible costs. To our employees, we
will promote a safe and pleasant work environment, provide an opportunity to advance
according to their abilities and fairly compensate based on performance. To our bondholders, we will operate in a financially sound and prudent manner and meet all debt
payments and other legally imposed requirements to insure the protection of their interests. Our mission can be best accomplished through the sound management of existing projects and consideration of additional projects as approved by the City of Richmond and the Counties of Chesterfield and Henrico. These projects are financed primarily through user fee schedules which offer the lowest possible costs to the public,
fairly compensate employees, and offer financial safety to bondholders.

A GOOD CRY - GRIEF OR JOY

ITS OKAY TO LET IT OUT!

By Deborah Little-Bowser, R.N., B.A., M.P.S.
I recall a time when I was feeling so overwhelmed; I didnt know what
to do. A good friend said, You look like youre ready to cry. Just let
it out! She hugged me and the river of tears began to flow. It was like
a cleansing; and I did feel much better. I was able to think clearer about
the situation and consider choices to make the problem less daunting.
TEARS are the liquid secreted from the lachrymal glands found in our
eyes. We shed them in times of grief, joy, or an irritant in our eye.

I recently had the opportunity to hear poet and author Nikki Giovanni
speak to a group of authors, students and readers. She touched on a topic
which resonated with me: Crying! When was the last time you really
had a good cry? If you felt the need to cry, did you? If not, why
didnt you just let the tears flow? Were you concerned about what people would say or considered it a sign of weakness? Think about why
you didnt. In our busy lives (work, caring for others, etc.) and with so
much negativity bombarding our senses daily, sometimes you just feel
like crying - but we dont. Crying is a release. Crying makes some people feel better, may reduce stress, and provide a sense of release from
whatever emotion(s) it is that you are holding in.
As the leaves on the trees are falling this season,
consider shedding your LEAVES
that make you want to cry:

Lost Dreams
Expectations not met
Annoyances
Vexing thoughts or people
Experiences not worthy of a second thought
Stressful situations

So, give yourself permission to just let it all out and

Have a GOOD CRY - whether for grief or joy!
