In a state where more people die from drug overdoses than automobile accidents, the need for drug addiction treatment has outpaced available treatment resources. The emergency room at VCU Medical Center routinely
sees multiple patients a day who have been brought there after a drug
overdose, yet there are few treatment options available. Many of the patients who overdose do so with the illicit drug heroin. However, according
to a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association, threequarte

Its so amazing how LOVE is d-e-f-i-n-e-d: words, gifts (like perfume),
so much timespent Fancy cars, name brand clothes, an expensive
house thats never a homebecause at the end of the day, she finds
herself all alone. Its so amazing how LOVE is d-e-f-i-n-e-dwhen
someone says I love you until the end of timeButwhen does the
end of time--come? Is it when its too late When two people never
become one? Does ones life have to be broken apartbecause of
the pain she endures deep within her weakened heart? The fussing and
cussingswearing up and down; the blame-finger pointed coupled
with the haunting frowns. The hugs that no longer existone thinking
about who would be missedThe innocent children forced to see
what should never be seen. Now what exactly does that mean?
LIFE IS TOO PRECIOUS TO WASTE ON WHAT ISNT
MEANT TO BE! DONT BE A VICTIM OF DOMESTIC

Richmond Public Schools began receiving Open Enrollment and Specialty School applications for the 2017-2018 school year on October 20 using
a new online application system, Registration Gateway. An award-winning online enrollment platform, Registration Gateway will provide a
more streamlined process for managing applications and offer parents the
ability to access their application and check enrollment status from any
computer, tablet or smartphone with Internet access. During the Open Enrollment window, parents may apply for their child(ren) to attend up to
two out-of-zone schools. The term out-of-zone refers to a school zoned
for an address other than the physical address in which the student currently resides. Applications will be accepted online and are also available
from the districts website, at all schools and in the Office of Pupil Personnel Services, located at 301 North Ninth Street, 13th floor. All Open Enrollment applications must be received by 4:30 p.m. on November 11.
The Sibling Request to Attend must also be completed during this application window. Parents interested in applying to the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programmes at Thomas Jefferson High School and Lucille
Brown Middle School, as well as Franklin Military Academy, Open High
School, Richmond Community High School, or Maggie L. Walker and
Appomattox Regional governors schools should also apply through the
Registration Gateway. For information regarding application deadlines
for each individual school/program, visit rvaschools.net to access a comprehensive Open Enrollment/Specialty School application timeline. The
Richmond Career Education and Employment Academy and Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts will continue to use a paper application for
the 2017-2018 school year.
To support parents with the new application process, information sessions
will be held as follows:
Open Enrollment/All Specialty Schools
November 9, 2016 @ 6 p.m. Boushall Middle School
Specialty Schools/IB Only (no Governors Schools)
December 7, 2016 @ 6 p.m. Franklin Military Academy
Additional application support will also be available for parents at all
Richmond Public Library locations. To access Registration Gateway or
for additional information regarding the Open Enrollment and Specialty
School application process, visit rvaschools.net.

CITIZENS ACADEMIES
PROVIDE US WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO
INVOLVE CITIZENS IN THE RPDS
LAW ENFORCEMENT EFFORTS!
While effective community policing is based on relationships built on mutual trust and understanding, the Richmond Police Department opens its
doors to the community through our themed Academies and volunteering.
The Richmond Police Department offers a variety of themed Citizen Academies that are delivered to the diverse communities that we serve. The
classes are designed to provide the participants with information regarding
the internal workings of the department and for them to experience various
specialized units within the organization. The themed Academies provide
us with an opportunity to involve citizens in the Richmond Police Departments law enforcement efforts. It gives citizens a working knowledge of
the Richmond police departments mission, operations, policies, personnel,
and challenges. As a result, citizens become more familiar with the day-today operations of our police department and the actual role of the police.
Our goal is to provide a better understanding of the departments operations
and philosophies. The curriculum covers a variety of topics that range from
gun and drug use in the city to how a murder is investigated. Participants
also ride with officers, get a first-hand look at how the Division of Emergency Communications operates, and visit the firing range. Themed academy
graduates are eligible for the Neighborhood Assistance Officer and Volunteers in Policing programs. Our next Citizens Police Academy is scheduled
for January 11, 2017. For more information, please visit our website at
www/Richmondgov.com/Police/CommunityCareUnit.aspx.

November 2016 - Issue No. 26
Page 13
NorthsideVibes
I recently had the opportunity to hear poet and author Nikki Giovanni
speak to a group of authors, students and readers. She touched on a topic
which resonated with me: Crying! When was the last time you really
had a good cry? If you felt the need to cry, did you? If not, why
didnt you just let the tears flow? Were you concerned about what people would say or considered it a sign of weakness? Think about why
you didnt. In our busy lives (work, caring for others, etc.) and with so
much negativity bombarding our senses daily, sometimes you just feel
like crying - but we dont. Crying is a release. Crying makes some people feel better, may reduce stress, and provide a sense of release from
whatever emotion(s) it is that you are holding in.
As the leaves on the trees are falling this season,
consider shedding your LEAVES
that make you want to cry:
Lost Dreams
Expectations not met
Annoyances
Vexing thoughts or people
Experiences not worthy of a second thought
Stressful situations
