India is the largest producer of milk and also comprises of highest no. of
cattle in the world. Feeding of cattle is also a traditional practice. Though
the Indian cattle productivity is low because of low quality feed and poor
genetic makeup, the country has the ability to produce around 80 million
tons of milk per annum. The dairy industry has an annual growth rate of
5% with an annual per capita consumption of 240g/day.
The cattle market of Zubair Ganj, Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh is one of the largest dairy
cattle markets in India. It was established in 202 by Mohd. Zubair Khan and is a
weekly market (Sunday). The market invites traders from various states like
Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. It is
a private market that is spread over an area of 25 acres and more than
10000 cattle transactions take place every day. Though the cattle market
runs throughout the year but the peak seasons include months from
January to March and July to September.
