Self-regulating subsea chemical metering valves for MEG, Methanol and LDIs
Cameron continues to develop its chemical injection product range to meet the demands of
operators expanding subsea distributed chemical injection system needs. Camerons in-house
developed CIMV technology is extensively tested and qualified through deepwater simulations,
and an evergrowing installed base and operational experience.
A History of
Innovation
Over 35 years of flow control
Camerons CIMVs are remotely operated, ROV retrievable, self-regulating subsea chemical injection
metering systems. Self-regulation is an integral part of all our CIMV technology and only requires one
user defined input (flow rate) for the system to monitor and control using onboard closed-loop control.
The low-flow CIMV, designed for injection of LDIs (wax, scale, corrosion, etc.), uses a positive
displacement (PD) flow meter and micro-needle throttling valve. The design has been engineered to
handle flow rates from 0.5 l/hr up to 90 l/hr (0.132 gal/hr to 23.8 gal/hr) and has been packaged
The medium- and high-flow CIMVs are aimed at hydrate prevention via regenerated MEG or
methanol injection with a flow range of 80 l/hr to 26,500 l/hr (21 gal/hr to 7000 gal/hr) or higher
for large-bore gas developments. These units use Camerons patented non-intrusive CALDON
ultrasonic flow meter technology to improve reliability and accuracy of flow measurement along
with Camerons Multiple Orifice Valve (MOV) throttling valve driven by a stepper motor giving
common chemical supply header, the header pressure may fall as the other chemical injection valves
in the system adjust. If it does, the flow rate across the throttling valve also will drop. This will, in
turn, be registered by the flow meter.

Flow Measurement
The low-flow CIMV PD flow meter gives direct readings
of flow. It operates using a rotary piston, of which each
revolution transmits a discrete volume of fluid so that each
rotation can be directly translated into a flow rate based on
the pistons frequency. This improves the flow rate physical

A secondary method of flow determination is also supplied
sensors across the throttling valve and a linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) to
provide valve position. This information can be used in conjunction with trended field data to
determine the flow rate.
Throttling Valve
The low-flow CIMV uses a micro-needle and seat
throttling valve to regulate the flow through the system.
The needle has an equal percentage flow curve, providing
control at low flow rates. It is operated by an electric
actuator, which provides very fine system adjustment,
controlled by the feedback from the PD flow meter via

consists of two pressure sensors across the throttling valve and a rotary variable differential
transformer (RVDT) to provide valve position. Processing at the system level can then be used to
convert this data to flow rates via a look-up table of trended field data.
Throttling Valve
The medium- and high-flow CIMVs use a field-proven Multiple Orifice Valve (MOV) choke trim
technology to provide an erosion-resistant throttling element. The MOV trim consists of two sintered

SIMULATORS
Camerons CIMV simulator facilitates testing of the subsea control module and
the electrical and software interfaces. The simulator has the same electrical
behavior as the real CIMV. The software and interface modules of the simulator
are identical to the ones that run on the CIMV. The simulator has the capability
to adjust the pressure values and flow rates, as well as simulate multiple fault
