indicates 2 different shevas:

The sheva you learned in Lesson 2 is the silent sheva (= no vowel, as in sister).

It closes a syllable. For example:

, ,

However, the vocal sheva introduced here, starts a word or a syllable and
sounds like 'e' in get3.
For example:

, , , ),

In today spoken Hebrew, and in the case of some consonants, you will often hear the
vocal sheva too, slurred to a no-vowel.
For example:

will be pronounced 'Shlomo' and not 'Shelomo'

Lesson 9

Aleph Bet the Practical Way

Lesson 9
Subjects covered:

(c)Rahel Halabe

, , at the end of a word

The complex vowels introduced in this lesson are not straightforward.

They appear only at the end of a word, and only with the consonants , ,
printed with the vowel [ ] underneath. In such cases, you do not read the
, , as you learned up to now. Rather, you pronounce their vowel [ ]
just before the consonants , , , while the consonants themselves are
pronounced with no vowel. This way, the vowel [ ] is not attached to any
consonant, and produces the sounds closest to ya or wa (as explained
below in a. & b.).
Let us try this through a few examples. Eventually, with much reading
practice of common vocabulary, you will be able to 'sight read' words with
these complex vowels.
a. When the vowel preceding , , is [ ] or ] [, the vowel [ ] under
the , , moves back (between the last two consonants of the word) and
produces a sound closest to ya. Look at the following examples. On the
right you see the words as they are printed. Follow the arrow and read them
with the ya sound inserted just before the last letter ( any of , ,), and
that last letter pronounced with no vowel.
