The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that residential, commercial, and

public buildings account for 30 to 40 percent of the worlds energy consumption.

The sectors contribution to current world CO2 emissions is estimated by various
sources at 25 to 35 percent.

The GCC Energy Mix in a Global Context

The GCC region has the highest energy intensity in the world, and member states
are expected to post robust growth in population, energy use over the next decade.
In addition, energy efficiency options represent 40 percent of global greenhouse gas
reduction potential that can be realized at a cost of less than $80 per metric ton of
carbon dioxide.

Renewable Energy Facts and Figures

Gulf countries are as richly endowed with renewable resources as they are with
hydrocarbons. They benefit from strong regular sunshine, and the space to develop
large solar power plants.
The region also has significant wind resources, geothermal and biomass from urban
waste.
Gulf countries have rising energy demand: Gulf countries have seen rapid economic
growth and have become major energy consumers in their own right.
Regional electricity consumption is growing at almost 8% a year meaning
generating capacity has to be doubled every decade. Gulf countries will require 100
GW of additional power over the next 10 years to meet demand.
Electricity produced from renewables means less oil and gas has to be consumed
domestically, freeing them for export.
Renewable energy offers Gulf countries a proven, home-grown path to reducing CO2
emissions: The six GCC countries are in the top 14 per capita emitters of carbon
dioxide in the world; renewables offer a financially viable way to change that.
There is also growing pressure to protect the Gulfs fragile environment.
Renewable energy power generation is becoming more cost effective: improving
technology and growing competition have seen the cost of renewable energy drop
dramatically.
In some parts of the world, especially when compared to diesel generation, it is
already the cheapest option. Furthermore, solar power generation fits very well with
demand patterns where air conditioning dominates the electricity demand curve

particularly in GCC countries.

Countries in the GCC have been undertaking renewable energy projects for more
than 30 years.
But today a trend for increasingly ambitious projects is being witnessed across the
region.
These are being supported by renewable energy targets, innovative research and
development, and investments across the entire industry value chain.
Growing a renewable energy industry in the Gulf will move the world closer to
realizing the potential of renewable energy as a fuel source.

Levels of Energy Audits

Levels of analysis have been organized into the following categories:
Preliminary Energy Use Analysis
- Obtained from the owner/operator of the building before a visit to the building.
1- Gross conditioned area.
2- Utility bills and summarize them for at least a one-year period, preferably three years.

Level I AnalysisWalk-Through Analysis

1- Perform a brief walk-through survey of the facility to become familiar with its construction, equipment,
operation, and maintenance.
2- Meet with owner/operator and occupants to learn of special problems or needs of the facility.
3- Perform a space function analysis.
4- Breakdown of energy use for significant end-use categories.
5- Identify low-cost/no-cost changes to the facility that will result from these changes .

Level II AnalysisEnergy Survey and Analysis

1- Review mechanical and electrical system design.
2- Review existing operating and maintenance problems.
3- Measure key operating parameters and compare to design levels, for example, operating schedules,
heating/cooling water temperature, supply air temperature, space temperature and humidity, ventilation
quantities, and light level at the task.
4- List all possible modifications to equipment and operations that would save energy.
5- Estimate the cost of each practical measure.

Level III AnalysisDetailed Analysis of Capital Intensive

Modifications.
1- Expand definition of all modifications requiring further analysis.
2- Review measurement methods, and perform additional testing and monitoring as required to allow
determination of feasibility.
3- Perform accurate modeling of proposed modifications. Ensure that modeling includes system
interaction.
4- Prepare a schematic layout of each of the modifications.
5- Estimate the cost and savings of each modification.
6- Meet with owner to discuss/develop recommendations.
