Texting is turning
us into a nation of
very silly walkers
By Sarah Westcott
THE use of mobile phones while on
the move is having an unexpected
side-effect it is making us walk in a
silly way, according to a study.
Researchers have discovered that
fiddling with a screen while walking in
public has a direct affect on our gait.
While not quite as pronounced as
Monty Pythons famous Ministry of
Silly Walks sketch, tapping a phone
while walking causes us to take longer
strides with more pronounced knee
bends and stiffer ankles.
Scientists suggest this happens as
the body tries to ensure it is stable
while the mind is occupied elsewhere
with the phone screen.
Researchers asked 22 volunteers to
dial a number on their mobile phone
while walking on a treadmill for
two minutes.
They wore 62 reflective markers on
their arms, trunk, pelvis and legs.
These were monitored by motion
cameras to measure knee flexion, hip
movement and leg swing.
They found that when people were
distracted by tapping their screens,
they began to walk with exaggerated
strides as if to stop themselves tripping over unseen hazards.

The scientists from Delaware university in the US said people were
unaware of adopting the new walk as
their body seemed to take over
when it sensed a risk of falling.
The new adapted movements help
people to avoid obstacles when they
are not looking where they are going,
claims the study published in Motor
Behaviour.
Report author Dr Kelly Seymour
said: Our results suggest that when
dialling a phone while walking, healthy
adults adopt a more cautious gait,
which may limit their risk of falling.
Dual-tasking

dual-task walking by increasing the
base of support.
Special text walking lanes have
been set up in the centre of the Belgian city of Antwerp so mobile phone
users do not collide with pedestrians.
Earlier this year, a study found that
Britons use their phones every four
minutes, on average.
In 24 hours, they occupy people 253
times a day or for an average of two
hours nine minutes, but only 13 per
cent of that time is for calls.

Residents said the tremors had continued for a long time and were felt
throughout the country.
One woman, who gave her name as

Marie Black, a local councillor, said:
It was a significant shake, I have felt
several aftershocks and it is very unnerving.
New Zealand lies in the seismically

Richard Maclean, a spokesman for

Game is up
for dementia
BRAIN training games can help
people at risk of dementia stave
off the condition, a study shows.
Computer-based mental
activities are able to help people
with mild cognitive impairment
(MCI) to improve their memory,
learning and thinking skills, as
well as their mood, it was found.
Scientists studied the results
of 17 clinical trials involving 700
volunteers over the past 20 years.
They found basic maths and
memory tests can help people
with MCI improve brain function
and raise their quality of life.
The same effects were not
found in people who already had
dementia, says the University of
Sydney study, published today in
American Journal Of Psychiatry.
People with MCI have memory
problems worse than expected
for their age. It is not a form of
dementia but it raises the risk of
developing it. One in five people
over 65 have MCI 850,000
people in the UK have dementia.
Dr Doug Brown of Alzheimers
Society said it is more evidence
of the benefits of brain training.

A ROYAL Navy veteran who
survived the Croydon tram horror
crash says he did not feel the
brakes come on in the moments
before the carriages overturned,
killing seven passengers.
Kevin Snow, 57, was making his
regular trip to work when the tram
derailed on a sharp bend near
Sandilands, in South London, last
Wednesday morning.
Father-of-seven Mr Snow, originally from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, said the tram failed to slow
down as it exited a tunnel and
approached the bend.
He said: Usually as you leave
the tunnel you feel the brakes but
I didnt seem to at all. Next thing I
knew, we were on our side.
Heartbroken
Everyone was screaming and
shouting, a lot of people were
injured. Lots couldnt move.
More than 50 people were
treated for injuries in hospital.
The final three dead to be named
were identified at the weekend as
Donald Collett, 62, from Croydon,
and Philip Logan, 52, and Robert
Huxley, 63, from New Addington.
Tragic Mark Smith, Phil Seary,
Dorota Rynkiewicz and Dane
Chinnery were named on Friday.
Mr Huxleys family revealed the
loving husband and grandfather
was a regular user of the tram.
In a statement, they said: Early
on Wednesday, Bob left for work
and travelled by tram to East Croydon, tragically he did not return.

Drunken ship
captain jailed
A VODKA-SWIGGING Russian sea
captain has been jailed for drunkenly
steering his ship home after celebrating
his grandsons first birthday.
Alexander Tipisov, 64, nearly hit other
ships as he navigated his 1,861-ton cargo
vessel out of port at Barrow, Cumbria.
The dishevelled and swearing
captain made hazardous manoeuvres,
Barrow crown court heard.
A tug had to nudge it off a collision
course. Tipisov, at twice the alcohol
limit, was jailed for four months on
Friday. Judge Beverley Lunt said: You
should have delayed your departure.
Threat to fine
leaf collectors
A COUNCIL threatened to fine two
women for clearing up leaves.
Ann Fowler, 76, and Margaret Baker,
71, filled 25 bin bags from their cul-desac in Winson Green, Birmingham.
The road was so hazardous that Mrs
Baker slipped and broke her wrist and
thumb while tidying it up.
They were shocked when Birmingham
City Council classed the collected
leaves as illegal garden waste.
The council has now withdrawn the
threat of a fine and thanked the pair.
Mrs Fowler said: We were just trying
to help.

If democracys not for you

I see Donald Trumps victory is
being compared to Brexit. The only
connection I can see is the losers
are whinging about the results
(Ill help you ditch the EU,
November 11).
If these whiners cannot accept
the workings of democracy then
perhaps they are living in the
wrong country.
Whether they like it or not, the
people freely voiced their opinion
and dissatisfaction with the status
quo. Maybe they would be better
off living where such behaviour by
is not tolerated, such as North
Korea, China or Russia.
In the case of some of our
politicians and so-called
celebrities, the sooner the better.

LOWLY I began to
replace my old habits
with new ones, cleaning
up my diet, binning the booze,
exercising gently but regularly and
meditating daily.
I lifted the pressure I had put on
myself to perform and for the first
time ever, I became the boss of my
own life.
As the weeks rolled on, little by
little I began to feel brighter and,
about six months after James was
born, I had a breakthrough.
Sitting up in bed one morning in
early 2011, I felt as if a weight had
been lifted. I felt able to take on
the day. I was free.
When James was 18 months old
I moved out of my mums and into

Spurred on by how great I felt,
I continued my new way of life.
Carrying on with my studies,
I also embarked on a change of

Now, while I still model parttime, I am a wellness coach and

My aim is to get people talking

If I can assure just one person

The iron head attachment allows you to simply glide over fabrics to achieve a smooth
finish, applying the crease head then allows you to create perfect pleats and creases
where desired. With the addition of the wool brush and upholstery head it can be used
to remove small areas of soiling or stains on heavier materials such as linen, wool and
upholstery.
It features an indication light for when the product is at optimum temperature to start
using and can provide a continuous steam output as needed. It can be used both
vertically and horizontally meaning those hard to reach areas will not be missed.
Measures L30 x W15 x D10cm and has 180cm power cord.

2 Curry
I went to university in
Birmingham in the 1970s, just
when the curry revolution was
starting in Britain.
I loved the fact that as
a student I could go to a
restaurant and eat really cheap
but delicious and filling food.
These days, I tend to have
a curry at least three times
a week as I am quite addicted
to Indian food.
Whenever I go abroad, I never
return home craving roast beef
and Yorkshire pudding or fish
and chips.
Instead all I really want is a
particularly good lamb dopiaza.

Keep your garments and fabrics wrinkle free and looking fresh with this amazing steam
brush by Easy Steam. The powerful, lightweight 1500w steamer has four different
attachments for removing creases and soils without the use of chemicals. By using the
power of steam you can iron, pleat and remove stains and wrinkles without applying
direct heat to more delicate and awkward materials.

Inflation at
a new high
after fuel
price rise
By Kalyeena Makortoff
City Reporter
What the
Sunday
papers say
Picture: PA
Inflation is expected to
hit a two-year high when official figures for October are
published tomorrow.
The Consumer Price Index
(CPI) measure of inflation is
forecast to have reached
1.2 per cent in October, up
from 1 per cent in September
and 0.6 per cent in August.
Economists are predicting
that a jump in petrol and
diesel prices will push up the
cost of living, as stronger oil
prices make filling up at the
pump pricier.
Sterlings near 20 per cent
slump against the US dollar
and 15 per cent fall against
the euro since the EU referendum result is also expected
to start feeding through to
prices, with services firms
and manufacturers passing
on higher import costs.
The latest manufacturing
PMI report for October said
the pounds collapse had triggered the steepest rise in
purchasing costs in the surveys 25-year history.
Howard Archer, chief UK
and European economist at
IHS Global Insight, is predicting CPI to trend markedly
higher over the coming
months as the impact of sterlings weakness is felt.
He is forecasting inflation
to reach its 2 per cent target
in the first quarter of next
year, before rising to 3 per
cent in the latter part of
2017 and peaking at around
3.5 per cent in early 2018.
Bank of England governor
Mark Carney said recently
Britons should expect higher
costs as the Banks latest
forecast showed inflation rising up to 2.7 per cent in 2017.

Donald Trumps election victory

TURBULENT TIMES: EasyJet slashed its own pre-tax profit guidance last month
drop in per-seat revenue in the three
months to September 30, as it slashed
fares amid a price war with budget airlines including Ryanair.
Mr Spooner said: The market will
be especially interested to hear if there
is any change in the expectations for a
further drop in revenue per seat in the
first quarter of the new financial year.
Rival Ryanair produced some good
figures recently but easyJets latest
monthly passenger stats were slightly
disappointing.

Novak
puts the
heat on
Murray
The former world No1 set about
regaining his place at the top of
the hill by beating Dominic Thiem
6-7, 6-0, 6-2 in his opening match
at the ATP World Tour Finals
yesterday afternoon.
With two hours and two minutes
of effort and a great deal of angst
in that first set he had cut
Murrays lead at the top of the
rankings from 405 points to 205.
That was a start.
Murray will begin his campaign
tonight against Marin Cilic, the
former US Open champion from
Croatia. If the Scot can rack up a
win, he will restore that 405 buffer
between himself and Djokovic but
with potentially 1,500 ranking
points available to the champion,
there is a long way to go yet before
any end-of-year rankings are
decided at the O2 Arena.
On paper, Cilic is facing an uphill
battle tonight. In 15 previous
meetings he has won just three
times. But the last time they met,
when Murray was on an unbeaten
22-match run as the champion of
Queens Club, Wimbledon and the
Rio Olympics, Cilic did win. And in
straight sets too, to take his first
Masters 1,000 title in Cincinnati.
That win in Cincinnati is quite
a big part for me to prepare for
this next match, and to know that
even with Andys great form I was
By Alix Ramsay
able to beat him, said Cilic.
Definitely I take a few things from
that to help me beat him here.
Cilic has a secret weapon in the
shape of Jonas Bjorkman. He
signed up the Swede for coaching
duties in August and as the former
assistant coach in Murrays camp,
Bjorkman can give a unique insight
into the Scots game.
Having Jonas on my side now is
definitely a big plus when you
come into this match, said Cilic.
But I have to focus on myself and
focus on my tennis.
Jonas is extremely positive,
extremely motivated and that is
something that helps me to be
better at producing consistent
tennis week-in, week-out. A huge
part of it is to implement a net
game and improve that.
Djokovic, now reunited with his
coaches Boris Becker and Marian
Vajda, was hoping that getting the
old gang back together would
work out great too. But then
Thiem, the 23-year-old Tour Finals
debutant from Austria, took the
first set with a mixture of
outrageous winners, stunning
shotmaking and sheer chutzpah.
When Thiem claimed the set,
the supporters cheered wildly
while Djokovic batted away a ball
towards his team in fury and
picked up a code violation for
unsportsmanlike conduct when
the ball bounced into the crowd. It
was yet another example of

ENGLAND
AUSTRALIA
18
36
By Chris Hamilton
OF ALL the indignities
heaped on England by
Australia in recent times,
this
was
the
most
depressing.
The appointment of legendary
coach Wayne Bennett was
supposed to take England to
the next level and make them
capable of finally beating the
Kangaroos.
But at the Olympic Stadium
yesterday,
England
were
familiarly
and
ruthlessly
outclassed once again as their
hopes of making the Four
Nations final at Anfield were
reduced to rubble.
A tight first half ended 10-6 to
Australia but the second half
got ugly as England capitulated
and appeared as far away from
their rivals as at any point
during the past decade.
It will be New Zealand who
face the Kangaroos in Sundays
final after a result and display
that will give Bennett plenty to
think about ahead of next years
World Cup Down Under.
Bennett was handed a twoyear deal as head coach despite
Steve
McNamara
guiding
England to a Test series win
over the Kiwis last autumn.
Widely regarded as the Sir
Alex Ferguson of rugby league,
having won a record seven NRL
titles in his homeland, Bennetts
arrival encouraged hopes of
beating the worlds best.
If anything, though, England
have gone backwards under the
66-year-old in this tournament.
Australia, knitted together
superbly by skipper Cameron
Smith and half-backs Johnathan
Thurston and Cooper Cronk,
were too strong once again.
They outscored England by six
tries to three and Bennett was
left to bemoan an error-strewn
display, which included his side
twice failing to find touch from
penalties during the first half.
Despite boasting over half-adozen NRL-based players in his
side, Bennett said: Our inability
to continually maintain pressure,
not finding the sideline on two
occasions, was pretty important
in any context let alone against
the best team in the world. Then
there were stupid penalties we
continually give away. England
are very capable of being a lot

sixth and
final try

England are
ripped apart
better than they are right now
but we need to get these little
problems out of the road, which
are manifested by their club
football.
They get away with it at that
level but you cant at this level
and thats the difference.
Its not about commitment,
effort, or guys trying hard
because they have good skills.
Its all there, they just have
to clean their act up and figure
out what beats them. They
think its the opposition that
beats them.
England struck first through
Jermaine McGillvarys wellworked effort before Australia
replied through a similar score
from Blake Ferguson in the right
corner.
Four minutes after the restart,
Sam Burgess spilled the ball less
than 10 metres out and Australia
soon advanced upfield as Greg
Inglis dummied his way through
the England defence to score. In

ALEX NOREN hailed the best round of his life
after claiming a fourth European Tour title in
his past 11 events in the Nedbank Challenge.
The Swede, five shots behind Wang Jeunghun,
carded a 63 in South Africa to finish six shots
clear. Rory McIlroy can still end the season as
European No1 for the third year in a row, but
has to win in Dubai and hope Henrik Stenson
finishes 55th or worse in the 60-man field.

JOE SCHMIDT has

Schmidt admits
Ireland caught the

Right, this is what we

together as best we can.
Scotland suffered
another single-point
defeat to Australia, but
rookie prop Zander
Fagerson said the future
was bright after their
new props stood tall.
Loosehead Allan Dell
made his debut while
tighthead Fagerson
was making his first
international start.
They came up against
an Australia front row
containing more than
200 caps, but with the
guidance of hooker Ross
Ford making his 100th
Scotland appearance
did not disappoint.
We did some good
things, some bad things,
but it was a great day for
learning, said Fagerson.
Its a shame about the
result but I loved being
out there. The boys put
in a hell of a shift and
were just unlucky.
England
to
the
Junior
World
Championship in 2014, has yet to taste
defeat for the senior side. With a Grand
Slam and an historic series win in
Australia in his back pocket, 2016 had
delivered a fantasy start to his Test
career up until his injury.
There are plenty of other England
absentees this autumn but the
suspicion is that it will be Itoje who
will be missed the most. Barely out of
nappies as a Test player, he is already
the man Eddie Jones can least do
without.
In a side constructed upon the twin
bedrocks of destructive defence and
forward power, he delivers in both to
an extent that a player of his tender
years has no right to.
He is a special individual whose
career is on fast-forward as his latest
award last night underlined.
ENGLAND captain Sarah Hunter,
who led her team to a 12-10 win over
Ireland yesterday in which recordbreaking prop Rochelle Clark scored a
try on her 155th appearance, was
named World Rugbys womens player
of the year last night. Otherwise the
awards were dominated by New
Zealand who claimed the coach (Steve
Hansen) player (Beauden Barrett)
and team of the year gongs.

IT WAS an easy

the ball sailed through
the uprights to stretch
Englands lead to a
decisive 11-point

announcer proclaimed
to a rapturous
audience: Penalty to

Coming just before
the break and from a
couple of metres inside
the South African half,
the three-pointer was
delivered with such
precision that it was
natural to assume it
came from the boot of
Farrell, who walked
away from this
convincing victory with
19 points.
But the boot
belonged to Farrells

doing that in front of

I was practising

I feel I did that.
When you first come

We did a lot of very good

Cook scored his 30th

declared their secondinnings on 260-3 to set
up a late victory charge.
It saw him overtake

Cook said he was
