Roosevelt signed a joint Congressional resolution
to recognize the fourth Thursday of November as
the national Thanksgiving holiday. For these 75 years,
Americans have counted their blessings for their freedoms and pay it forward to needy friends and neighbors.
This year, many families in Cumberland County, New
Jerseys poorest county, again face unemployment challenges and uncertain futures.
For the eighth year, Project Thanksgiving, joined by
the Salvation Army of Vineland/Millville and Bridgeton,
will distribute turkeys throughout Cumberland County.
The Gloucester County turkey drive will support the
Food Bank of South Jersey.
Longtime friends Alex Kaganzev and Steve Plevins
are again steering the campaign. Their combined years
of experience working with disadvantaged populations
within New Jerseys state government help them direct
this successful program.
Kaganzev contacted Plevins in 2009 to help organize
a grassroots turkey drive throughout Cumberland
County. Their new Project Thanksgiving for South
Jersey replicated a successful Philadelphia food drive
program and they collected 330 turkeys that first year.
Thanks to tremendous support from Maria Bottino,
owner of three local ShopRites, DJ Steve Tatz of Cruisin
92.1FM WVLT radio and Joe McCluskey, manager of
Lincoln ShopRite in Vineland, the program expanded into
Gloucester County three years later. Valued at $20 per
turkey, Project Thanksgiving has since raised more than
$100,000 in cash and turkey donations in both counties.
We are delighted with Project Thanksgivings consistent growth and thank our numerous volunteers and
sponsors. Their continued dedication and generosity
contribute to this successful turkey distribution program, says Kaganzev, After eight years, we remain a
voluntary grass roots organization. I want to especially

{ 2 } the grapevine | NOVEMBER 16, 2016

n the nearly nine years since we

launched The Grapevine, weve only
made changes to our distribution a
small handful of times. Our formula is pretty
simple: We pay the U.S. Postal Service to
mail the newspaper directly to thousands of
households every week and supplement
that distribution with bulk delivery to hundreds of retail, dining and service establishments throughout Cumberland County. We
are sticking to that formula, but now were
actually expanding our distribution.
How many newspapers in this region,
much less nationwide, can say that?
Certainly none of the other weeklies, nor
the local daily newspaper can boast of
increasing their circulation numbers.
As many of you know, The Grapevine was
acquired by SNJ Today more than a year ago.
My staff and I still publish this newspaper for
you, but were getting a lot of help and guidance from some very smart people on the SNJ
Today management team. Together weve
decided that, while The Grapevine already has
the widest circulation of any print product in
Cumberland County, we could grow our business even more by expanding our mailing into
other areas of the county.
Starting with the November 2 issue, we
increased our distribution from 20,000
copies per week to 23,000 copies, broken
down as follows:
Mailing in Vineland: 11,356
Mailing in Millville: 2,911
Mailing in Hopewell/Deerfield/Rosenhayn/
Upper Deerfield/Bridgeton area: 2,291
Bulk dropped copies throughout
Cumberland County area: 6,442.
Unfortunately, this growth has come with
some sacrifice. We made a tough decision to
cut back slightly by eliminating four postal
carrier routes in Vineland, in order for our
distribution to better reflect the fact that we
are a countywide publication. For the
remainder of the year, we are offering these
loyal readers a deep discount off the cost of a
subscription. To have The Grapevine delivered via first-class mail for six months, the

each week by sending in your photos (birthdays, engagements, weddings, anniversaries,
births, graduations, awards), letters to the

photos and game/event recaps and community organization events by sending your
announcement to The Grapevine.
For our valued advertisers, The Grapevine
was already the best vehicle for your marketing needs; now we offer an even greater
return on your advertising investment. Our
distribution is double that of any of our competitors. If any of them dispute this fact, ask
them to show you otherwise by sharing their
print orders or any other proof of how many
copies they print or distribute.
Of course, its one thing to have a fantastic
distribution method, which we do. But if the
quality of the publications content wasnt
worth the postage, what good would that
do? Here at The Grapevine, we are proud to
hear from our readers, who tell us that this
is their favorite local publication, that they
read it from cover to cover, and that they
love the positive coverage of our southern
New Jersey community.
SNJ Today is committed to continuing
to tell our regions positive stories in the
most innovative ways, whether it be in the
pages of The Grapevine, on the radio at
99.9FM, on Cumberland Countys Channel
Comcast 22, on our nightly news broadcast at 7 and 11 p.m. throughout southern
New Jersey on Channel 4 or on our newly
relaunched website, SNJToday.com.
To all of our readers, especially the
thousands of new ones, welcome, and enjoy
your weekly community newspaper. I

umors of the Captain Kidd

treasure are prevalent in select
areas of New Jersey, no doubt
due to Kidds affiliation with
Monmouth County and the pervasiveness
of pirates on the states waterways.
In his Weird New Jersey article
Hunting for the Buried Treasure of
Captain Kidd, Michael J. Launay, identifies several locations as potential sites for
the Kidd loot. Sandy Hook was visited by
the pirate during his last trip to New
Jersey. Toms River provided protection
for pirates from the ocean elements,
while Cape May was where pirate and
other ships often stopped because it was a
source of fresh water.
Robert A. Peterson, author of Patriots,
Pirates and Pineys: Sixty Who Shaped New
Jersey, also identifies Cape May as well as
Brigantine and Five Mile Island as locations where rumored treasure may have
been buried by pirates. He writes that at
Cape May Point, a large cedar tree stood
near where a treasure was supposed to
have been buried. It was called the
Captain Kidd Treasure Tree.
But Launay declares the most famous
and plausible burial site was just north of
Sandy Hook near Whales (Wales) Creek,
which today is the southeast border of
Middlesex and Monmouth counties. Just
off the shoreline was a small island where
some 17th century Spanish gold coins
were found. This island became known as
Money Island, and was located off the
coast where Cliffwood Beach is today. It
has long since disappeared under the
eroding waters of the Raritan Bay, aided
by extensive excavation over the centuries. Launay explains that Cliffwood
Beach is situated in the middle of two
huge elm trees called Kidds Rangers,
that are taken to be markers that would
have allowed the pirate to relocate the
spot where his treasure was buried.
One more area in New Jersey, however,
has been associated with Kidds legend,
adding an interesting touch to the rumors.
Cumberland Countys connection to
Captain Kidds treasure may not be the
most plausible or renowned, but its link to
recorded history has allowed it to survive
into the 21st century.
Like Cape May, Greenwich, the western reach of Cumberland County, sits on
the Delaware Bay and used to be an offi-

cial West Jersey port of entry. The waterway once served as a thoroughfare for
Philadelphia-bound cargo and, according
to William McMahons South Jersey
Towns, goods were transported in flatwagons or floated up the river in small
barge-like boats.
There are plenty of stories about
pirates in the western portion of
Cumberland County, including the tale of
Greenwich resident Mary W. Bacon,
recorded on the Internet Archive website:
There has long been a tradition in the village, that the oldest part of Miss Bacon's
home imprisoned a pirate in the days of
piracy, and the people of the village heard
the rattling of his chains as they passed
the house.
The Jersey Shore Pirates website
explains that the Cape May section of the
Delaware Bay provided a swampy and
marsh area [where] pirates soon learned
the value of its natural hiding places along
the bay, and the same was true about
Greenwich. The website reports: As the
Delaware Bay served as the entry point to
the ports of Philadelphia, heavily laden
and slow moving ships would begin their
long journeys into the channel. Pirates
who had hidden their sloopsin the
marshy reeds would wait for the appropriate moment to strike quickly at these
vessels and plunder their goods.
A further explanation is provided by
Peterson: In old South Jersey the mouth
of the Delaware was a general rendezvous
for merchantmen with their riches from
the East and West Indies, making this area
prime hunting ground for pirates. The
merchantmens cargoes were destined for
New York, New England and Burlington
(then West Jerseys capital), but often
found their way into a pirates treasure
trove. This area was made even more conducive to pirates due to Philadelphias
lack of naval and military strength and the
reluctance of the peace-loving Quakers to
hang such rascals. Delaware Bay and the
barrier islands off Atlantic and Cape May
counties became something of a resort for
these outlaw vessels and were used for
repair of their ships.
Peterson contends that much of
[Kidds] professional life would be spent
sailing in and around South Jersey I

ven with a month and a half to

go, the year for us is beginning
to wind down and draw to a
close. With our last big rush of
events over and the year-end festivities
under control, we can look forward to
planning for the new yearplanning that
is underway right now.
That means discussing events and initiatives that we want to bring back, planning new events and programs, and compiling a calendar with all of this information.
While youll be reading a lot more
about next years plans as the time gets
closer, I want to give you, at least, a peek
ahead.
Were planning on bringing back some
popular events. Of course, Cruise Down
Memory Lane and the Holiday Parade are
iconic events that will be back for sure. So
will our A Taste of Vineland & Volunteer
Recognition Event, our Volunteer
Appreciation Event earlier in the year, our
Spring and Fall Planting Days, Merchant
Meet-and Greets, the Holiday Tree
Contest, and twice-a-year broker tours.
Events that made their debuts this year
that were great successes and that we
plan to bring back are the Scarecrow
Contest and the Pumpkin Patch Party
partnerships with the Vineland Board of
Education.
We would like to expand and enlarge
Wedding Weekend to make it a bigger
bridal expo. Our Fourth Fridays will continue year-round. We want to make more
use of our mini-parks for these and on
other occasions. We also would like more
businesses to take advantage of our
Fourth Fridays to stay open later on those
evenings and for restaurants to take
advantage of our Outdoor Dining initiative for those times as well as Dine on The
Ave, which well bring back. These can
also be times to work in more microevents, such as health fairs, car care
expos, and other events. We also want to
partner with the Greater Vineland
Chamber of Commerce on their cash mob
events that take place at downtown businessesan expansion of our earlier cash
assault idea.
Were also looking at introducing some
new events. Food truck festivals have
become increasingly popular and were
looking at the possibility of one for the

Study To Determine Salt
Marsh Carbon Storage
Capabilities
South Jersey Gas has partnered with
The Nature Conservancy to provide
$10,000 to support the first blue carbon
feasibility study in New Jersey. The study
will determine the potential of establishing a coastal wetlands carbon sequestration program in New Jersey. It will also
assess whether blue carbon credits could
be generated to help fund future coastal
restoration and conservation efforts.

The locations selected will be analyzed

to determine if wetland restoration can
reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They
include the Forsythe National Wildlife
Refuge in Galloway and the Avalon Marsh.
If feasible, blue carbon credits could
provide a new way to offset carbon emissions and generate revenue that can fund
coastal wetland restoration and conservation. According to the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA),
salt marsh can sequester more carbon in
its soil than tropical forest.
South Jersey Gas sustainability initiatives are described in the 2015/2016 South
Jersey Industries Corporate Sustainability
Report available online.

Millville Woman's Club Book Discussion

{ 6 } the grapevine | NOVEMBER 16, 2016

Pat Moore, far right, is shown holding the Millville Womans Club October book
selection of Rise Of The Rocket Girls, by Nathalia Holt. This book tells the untold
story of the remarkable women who helped to make Americas space program
possible. Among those joining in the discussion from left: Carol Wettstein and
Angie Fenton.
The next book club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday,
November 22 at the Millville
Womans Club on 3rd and E
Sts. The book to be discussed
is Remember Me Like This
by Bret Anthony Johnston.
Non-members are welcome
to come and participate.

It is estimated that nearly 114 million people in the United States are struggling
with the frustratingly natural eye condition presbyopia. Typically occurring in those
over 40, presbyopia reduces the ability of the eye to focus on near objects, causing
blurry reading vision. An advanced surgical procedure to treat this condition is now
available at Eye Associates. The KAMRA inlay has helped thousands restore their
near vision and reduce the constant frustrations of reading glasses.
As I see more and more patients looking for a solution for reading glasses, I
often get questions about effective treatments to improve near vision, said Dr.
Tyson. The KAMRA inlay offers an excellent option for the correction of presbyopia
with minimal compromises and inconveniences that come with other treatment
options. I am excited to offer the number one prescribed corneal inlay in the world
to my patients.
The KAMRA inlay sits in the first few layers of the eye known as the cornea.
Smaller and thinner than a contact lens, the inlay is a mini-ring with an opening in
the center. By using this pinhole effect, the inlay focuses light coming into your
eye. This restores near vision while maintaining distance vision without blurry
zones.
For those who are experiencing presbyopia symptoms, such as trouble reading
small print on cell phones and prescription labels, I recommend making an
appointment to see an eye doctor, said Tyson. An eye doctor can provide a proper
diagnosis and discuss long-term treatment options, such as KAMRA inlay, which
provides a natural range of vision from near to far.
To educate the public further on this ground breaking procedure, Eye Associates
and Sydney L. Tyson, M.D., M.P.H. held their first Near Vision Restoration seminar
recently. The seminar featured the KAMRA Inlay and the stories of patients Dr.
Mroz & Juanita Flores.
Sydney L. Tyson, MD, MPH is the first in South Jersey to offer this procedure
and rates as one of the top ophthalmologists/surgeons in the nation. As President
of Eye Associates & the SurgiCenter of Vineland, he also serves as a Wills Eye of
Philadelphia Physician and is a Harvard Medical School graduate.
I always recommend Dr. Tyson to all of my friends and family, said first
KAMRA patient, Kevin Roy. The advanced technology that Eye Associates offers is
truly incredible, said his wife Catherine Tremarki. I am so excited to have this
procedure after seeing my husbands results.
Eye Associates and SurgiCenter of Vineland has offices in 5 locations. Vineland

This years Spooktacular celebration

recently brought Halloween costumes,
foods, and games to the Cumberland
Cape Atlantic YMCA/YMCA of Vineland.
Almost 500 people of varying ages
attended. The event grows each year,
and 2016 was considered by some families to be the best Halloween event
ever. The focus was on family festivities,
with a nod to healthy fun. The biggest
hit may have been the Haunted House,
where kids were observed going time
and time again to tour the site. Trick or
treating was another big hit. Families
also enjoyed interacting with the many
community vendors. For younger children, the Un-Haunted Kid Zone included crafts, snacks, and a movie. The
evening even featured games and a
mini monster mash dance party in the
Milam Family Multipurpose Center. To
top it all off, the YMCA handed out
some 300 pumpkins, generously donated to by Freshwave.

The Jewish Federation of Cumberland, Gloucester

& Salem Counties will formally induct its new
President, M. Jay Einstein, at a Thanks for Giving
brunch on Sunday, November 20, at 11 a.m., at Beth
Israel Congregation, 1015 E. Park Ave., Vineland.
Einstein succeeds Dr. Michael Sarnoff, who will
also be recognized at the brunch for his achievements. Sarnoff has served as Federation President
for the past four years.
Steven Schimmel, former Federation Executive
Director and currently the executive director of the
Jewish Federation of Central Massachusetts, will also
be recognized for his years of service to the community.
Einstein comes to the Federation presidency with a great background of service
to the Jewish and general communities. Aside from having been a Vice-President
of the Federation, he serves as President of Temple Beth Hillel-Beth Abraham in
Carmel, President of the Board of Trustees of The Guidance Center and PastPresident of the south Jersey AIDS Alliance. A Certified Life Underwriter with New
York Life Insurance, he is a third-generation agent with that company,
It is a great honor and, at the same time, a great responsibility to be president of our Federation, Einstein said. All Jewish institutions face challenges
today and those of us who can contribute must create legacies for those who
cannot, so the services needed can continue. We must continue to have faith in
our institutions and we must also exhibit a personal commitment to our faith. I
ask each in our community to recommit themselves to our faith and to maintain
and increase their support of our Federations.

Ellison Students Attend Seaside Symposium

The Ellison School's Upper School students recently participated in the Seaside
Symposium held at Island Beach State Park sponsored by Clean Ocean Action.
Students studied ocean side fauna and flora and learned more about non-point
source pollution and marine litter. The Ellison School's academic program routinely extends beyond the traditional classroom walls and students gain insight
and hands-on experience as they explore the world around them.

Visionaries Present Innovative

Concepts to Cumberland Staff
Cumberland County College recently hosted
Dr. John Saltmarsh, director of the New England
Resource Center for Higher Education at the
University of Massachusetts, Boston, and Dr.
Adam Bush, provost and founding director of
Curriculum of College Unbound. Cumberlands
faculty and staff learned of innovative ideas in
higher education during their presentation,
Social and Economic Advancement through
Education.
Drs. Saltmarsh and Bush presented a radical
model of an institution, called College Unbound,
whose mission is to educate first-generation, low-income college students, and
marginalized populations such as the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated.
College Unbound reinvented higher education for underrepresented traditional
age and returning adult learners, using a model that is individualized, projectdriven, flexible and supportive. The groundbreaking program integrates a students own purposes for learning with the needs of their workplace and community, thus improving the lives of the student and of those they touch.
For the past year, College Unbound has worked with the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated from the Rhode Island Department of Corrections, and has
achieved significant results. The Prison Bridge Program (PBP) works with cohorts
both inside and outside of the prison. Incarcerated PBP alumni remain connected
to the program by becoming alumni mentors, recruiters and/or teaching assistants.
Students in the outside cohort receive more intensive support to help ease their
transition back into society and ensure their personal and professional success.
As Cumberland County College embraces an inclusive excellence model, we
want to make sure that we embrace the entire population, including those who
have experience with and who have been affected by incarceration, said CCC
President, Dr. Yves Salomon-Fernandez. This is a commitment of the Board and
the entire college to the people of Cumberland County.

Sunset and evening star,

And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea.
But such a tide as moving seems asleep
Too full of sound and foam,
When that which drew from out
the boundless deep, Turn again home.

Twilight and evening bell,

And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For though from our bourne of
Time and Place, The flood may bear me far
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.

New Jersey Ballet to Perform Nutcracker at Levoy Nov. 27

The New Jersey Ballet will offer two performances of the Nutcracker at the Levoy Theatre
on Sunday, November 27. Show times are 2
p.m. and 5 p.m. This marks the fourth year
the New Jersey Ballet has brought this family
favorite to Millville.
The story is a familiar one. The Nutcracker
and the Mouse King is a story written in 1816
by E.T.A. Hoffmann in which young Marie
Stahlbaums favorite Christmas toy, the
Nutcracker, comes alive and, after defeating
the evil Mouse King in battle, whisks her away
to a magical kingdom populated by dolls. When the curtain rises audiences can
expect eye-popping special effects, brilliant dancing, glorious costumes, and the
magic and pantomime that continue to delight audiences year after year and
inspire critics to praise the production.
The performances feature 20 young dancers from local dance schools whose
dancing, gymnastic moves and tumbling will define the roles of Mother Gingers
Clown Children. They auditioned in early October and rehearsed under the direction of Melissa Kiessling.
The production tours the state each year. This year it also makes stops at
Englewood and Morristown for 14 performances with the New Jersey Symphony
Orchestra.

Six tips for family caregivers.

{ 20 } the grapevine | NOVEMBER 16, 2016

ccording to the Caregiver Action

Network, more than 65 million
Americans care for a loved one
living with a disability, disease or
experiencing reduced financial capability
as a result of aging. According to AARP,
more than 19 million people assist older
individuals with their personal finances.
Financial caregivers, such as those with a
power of attorney, trustee or a federal benefits fiduciary, play an important role in
ensuring that all financesfrom routine to
complexare managed wisely, helping
their loved ones maintain the best quality
of life possible. In recognition of National
Family Caregiver Month, Capital Bank of
New Jersey is helping financial caregivers
better understand their role.
Millions of Americans are designated to
provide financial care to their loved ones,
said Capital Bank of New Jersey President
and CEO David Hanrahan. As a financial
caregiver, it is extremely important that you
stay up to date on any changes in laws and
regulations that may impact your role as a
fiduciary and your ability to take care of
your senior. Capital Bank of New Jersey
offers the following tips to help individuals
understand their role as financial caregivers:
1. Learn the rights and restrictions
that apply to your role. Financial caregivers, such as those with power of attorney,
trustees, and federal benefits fiduciaries, are
fiduciaries with a duty to act and make
decisions on a loved ones behalf. Learn the
legal responsibilities of your assigned
authority to better execute your role.
2. Manage money and other assets
wisely. Financial caregivers may be in
charge of daily, unexpected and future
expense their loved one may incur.
Especially if the beneficiary has a fixed
income or limited finances, it is extremely
important that caregivers minimize unnecessary costs and budget accordingly to
ensure that all money is properly allocated.
3. Recognize danger signs. Seniors have
become major targets for financial abuse
and fraud. Make sure to stay alert to signs
of scams or identity theft that may put your
loved ones assets in peril.
4. Keep careful records. When acting
as a financial agent, proper documentation
is not only encouraged but required. Keep
well-organized financial records, including
up-to-date lists of assets and debts and a
streamline of all financial transactions.
5. Stay informed. Monitor changes in

financial status of the beneficiary and take

appropriate action. Be sure to stay up to date
on changes in the laws affecting seniors.
6. Seek professional advice. Consult a
banker or other professional advisors when
youre not sure what to do.
Also, Capital Bank of New Jersey provides an explanation of the roles and
responsibilities of three types of financial
caregivers, as follows.
Understanding your role as a power
of attorney. POA is designated by your
loved one and gives you the authority to act
and make decisions on their behalf, including managing and having access to their
bank and other financial accounts.
Authority continues if the loved one
becomes incapacitated and ends when
power is revoked or loved one dies.
Understanding your role as a trustee.
Authority is given once you are named as
trustee or co-trustee of a revocable living
trust. As a trustee, your authority applies
only to the property noted in the trust,
authorizing you to protect, manage and distribute the trusts assets as directed in the
trust document. Authority continues after
death of the trust creator or grantor.
Understanding your role as a federal
benefits fiduciary. A federal benefits fiduciary is appointed to accept and delegate
federal government benefit payments, such
as Social Security and Veterans Affairs benefits, in the beneficiarys best interest. Funds
for the beneficiary are received through an
account set up solely for this purpose. As a
representative payee for Social Security benefits or a VA fiduciary for VA benefits, you
are required to keep detailed records of all
transactions related to the beneficiary and
file annual reports detailing how benefits
were used. Capital Bank of New Jersey visits

Hanging turkeys at dawn is an eyeopener. So is praying for those worse off.

t is the day after Halloween, All

Saints Day, and I am not feeling very
saintly. Our house has been stripped
of ghosts, bats and black cats.
Replacing those are a ceramic Thanksgiving
platter of falling leaves, lots of turkey art,
some pilgrims and Native Americans, and
a few cornucopia window stickers.
It is 6:45 a.m. and I am sweating in my
fuzzy bathrobe, tired from multiple trips to
the basement balancing plastic storage
bins in my hands while schlepping up and
down stairs.
Our autistic son got up at 5:30 a.m. and
turned the calendar page to November.
Sometimes my morning communication
with God is full of anger and self-pity.
I had been asking for days now to
please make the poltergeist in our house
give me back my prescription reading
glasses because Id looked everywhere.
And could she pretty please calm my autistic son so that he did not wake up several
times at night in a howling snit over some
issue we will never figure out?
Today the trigger was obvious:
Decorate the Thanksgiving, he
declared.
My husband had already given him a
half dose of sedative and was trying to
leave for work.
I was half asleep with a good chance of
getting wounded over the dcor issue. I
kissed my husband, waved him a cheery
good-bye, and gave our son the second half
of the pill.
You might think its a dirty trick to
sedate my son. But parenting can be a dirty
business. We live with a 26-year-old who
has periods of severe aggression. He has
100 pounds on me and, at times, a rage that
knows no bounds.
Alone with him, that pill is my only
defense.
This morning, during one of my sorties
to the basement storage room, I was grumbling about my decorating duties and using
bad words. I stuck my hand into the pocket
of my fuzzy robe, and there they were. My
reading glasses.
God was having a good time messing
with me. I said a little prayer of gratitude
for the prodigal glasses, and added: What
are you going to do about Greg?
Upstairs, Greg had become pacified and
occupied with attaching school-made

turkeys to the walls and hanging crossstitched Be Thankful cornucopias on

coat hooks. He didnt stop until the bins
were empty.
Was he happy?
No. He was not.
He pointed at the upstairs landing
where the bent-twig wreath with a goofy
turkey and a painted pumpkin for each
member of the family usually hangs.
My temples broke out in a sweat.
I was out of patience, and that wreath is
stored in the back of an impossibly cluttered closet.
Just then, Gregs bus arrived to pick
him up. Thank heaven.
I sat down and made some coffee and a
healthy breakfast. While I ate, l was still
sitting on my pity pot. But I remembered a
young mother I met who has three young
daughtersand is taking treatment for
cancer. Her mornings were probably way
more taxing than mine.
I have trouble with long traditional
prayers, but I decided to try a meditation
Id read about. Its perfect for me because I
have the attention span of a tsetse fly.
To do it, you take in a huge breath of air,
all the way down to your core, concentrating on someone who needs help, sucking
all of her stress into your lungs, and then
blowing a huge breath of healing out
toward her. I can do this spiritual exercise
as I move through the day.
I have people praying for me when Im
too weak to do it myself, and I know it has
helped because I am still on this side of
the sod.
Just thinking that my meditation might
work to boost that moms spirit kept me
from getting mired in my own depressing
thoughts. In this way, my whole day
became a prayer.
It even gave me the energy to dive into
the scary depths of the closet to drag out
the old turkey wreath, a relic of
Thanksgivings past. I made it in a craft
class as a young mom, when I thought my
family was complete. I was overjoyed to
paint another pumpkin for it when our
baby daughter arrived.
After 25 years, that old wreath drops a
trail of dried twigs on the landing carpet,
but I have to agree with Greg. Without it,
Decorating the Thanksgiving would be
imperfect. I

1. Preheat oven to 350. Beat cream

cheese and butter at medium speed with a
heavy-duty electric stand mixer until
creamy. Gradually add sugar, beating until
light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time,
beating just until yellow disappears. Add
sweet potatoes, and beat well.
2. Stir together flour, next three ingredients, and, if desired, cinnamon in a
medium bowl. Gradually add flour mixture to butter mixture, beating at low
speed just until blended after each addition. Stir in vanilla. Spoon batter into a
greased and floured 10-inch (12-cup) tube
pan.
3. Bake at 350 for 1 hour and 5 minutes
to 1 hour and 10 minutes or until a long

ne of my dads favorite deserts was

pound cake. I would make my big
Cream Cheese Pound Cake for
him over the weekends and then he would
have it all week. I would catch him sneaking a piece before dinner when Mom wasnt looking and then again before bed with
a big glass of milk. Funny thing about that
recipe is that I got it from TWA about 30
years ago. It was sent to us at the travel
agency in a TWA newsletter and I have
made it so many times that I do not even
have to look at the recipe card.
Dad would also love his sweet potatoes
during the fall, which he always got from
his great friend, Mr. Muzzarelli. Dad
would bring home a big bushel and store
it in the basement and then we had them
all winter. He would especially love my
moms candied sweet potato casserole
with pineapples and pecans, topped with
marshmallow that she always made for
Thanksgiving. This recipe was from her
sister, Anne, who had passed away when
we were kids. I think Mom held those
special memories of her sister inside and
making her recipe was her way of honoring that connection to the past.
I found this recipe for Sweet Potato
Pound Cake, which also uses cream
cheese, but the addition of sweet potatoes
makes it especially appealing for the
health-conscious within us all. Cut everyone a big slice and top with a big dollop of
whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon on top. Just delicious!
P.S. I just found a sassy little bistro in
MinotolaLydias Kitchen. She has

1 (8-oz.) package cream cheese,

softened
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
2 cups sugar
4 large eggs
2 1/2 cups cooked mashed sweet
potatoes
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. ground cinnamon or nutmeg
(optional)
1 tsp. vanilla extract

Ten collection sites will accept turkeys
and monetary donations. Cumberland
