St. Anne Novena St. Anne is the Mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary
and a great Saint!
Although Saint Anne is not mentioned in the Bible, she is the holy
mother of Mary and grandmother of Jesus. When we pray the St.
Anne Novena, we are asking help from our Blessed Mothers
mother!
Saint Annes feast day is on July 26th, so the St. Anne Novena is
traditionally started on July 17th but you can pray it anytime.
Devotion to St. Anne began early in the history of the Catholic Church. As she was
favored by God to become the mother of the holy Virgin Mary, she is often invoked as the
Patron of mothers as well as for relationships, among other things.
St. Anne, Mother of the Virgin Mary
Saint Anne was born in Bethlehem and eventually married Saint Joachim, a shepherd
from Nazareth, in Galilee.
Her name, Anne, actually derives from the Hebrew name Hannah meaning grace. There
is not a lot of literature about the life of St. Anne, but what we do know about her comes
from apocryphal literature, history and legend.
The story goes that St. Anne was married to St. Joachim for many years (some stories
report as many as twenty years) without being able to have children. After much ridicule
and sorrow because they could not conceive, both separately pleaded to God to take
away their sterility, promising that they would dedicate their child to the service of God.
Their prayers were heard.
An angel soon appeared before both of them, declaring that St. Anne would conceive and
give birth to a child who would be blessed by the entire world. That child was named
Mary, and today, she is our blessed Virgin Mother. After their daughters birth, St. Anne
and St. Joachim dedicated Mary to God at the temple of Jerusalem, where she spent a lot
of her childhood.

sinners like me, since you are the grandmother of Him who shed His blood for us, and

my prayers with confidence.
Vouchsafe to commend me to Jesus and Mary so that, at your request, I may be granted
remission of my sins, perseverance, the love of God, charity for all mankind, and the
special grace of
for which I stand in need at the present time. O most powerful protectress, let me not
lose my soul, but pray for me that through the merits of Jesus Christ and the intercession

Beloved of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, mother of the Queen of Heaven, take us and all who
are dear to us under your special care. Obtain for us the virtues you instilled in the heart
of her who was destined to become Mother of God, and the graces with which you were
endowed. O model of Christian womanhood, pray that we may imitate your example in
our homes and families, listen to our petitions,
Guardian of the infancy and childhood of the most Blessed Virgin Mary, obtain the graces
necessary for all who enter the marriage state, that imitating your virtues they may
sanctify their homes and lead the souls entrusted to their care to eternal glory. Amen.
St. Anne Novena, Day Four
Glorious Saint Anne, I kneel in confidence at your feet, for you also have tasted the
bitterness and sorrow of life. My need, the cause of my request, is
Good Saint Anne, you who did suffer much during the twenty years that preceded your
glorious maternity, I beseech you, by all your sufferings and humiliations, to grant my
prayer.
I pray to you, through your love for your glorious spouse Saint Joachim, through your love
for your immaculate child, through the joy you did feel at the moment of her happy birth,
not to refuse me. Bless me, bless my family and all who are dear to me, so that someday
we may all be with you in the glory of heaven, for all eternity.

Great Saint Anne, how far I am from resembling you. I so easily give way to impatience
and discouragement; and so easily give up praying when God does not at once answer
my request. Prayer is the key to all heavenly treasures and I cannot pray, because my
weak faith and lack of confidence fail me at the slightest delay. O my powerful
protectress, come to my aid, listen to my petition
Make my confidence and fervor, supported by the promise of Jesus Christ, increase as
the trial to which God in His goodness subjects me is prolonged, that I may obtain like
you more than I can venture to ask for. In the future I will remember that I am made for
heaven and not for earth; for eternity and not for time; that consequently I must ask,
above all, the salvation of my soul which is assured to all who pray properly and who
persevere in prayer.

Glorious Saint Anne, mother of the Mother of God, I beg your powerful intercession for
the freedom from my sins and the assistance I need in my troubles

What can I not hope for if you deign to take me under your protection? The Most High
has been pleased to grant the prayers of sinners, whenever you have been charitable
enough to be their advocate.
Therefore, I beg you to help me in all spiritual and temporal dangers; to guide me in the
true path of Christian perfection, and finally to obtain for me the grace of a happy death,
so that I may contemplate your beloved Jesus and daughter Mary in your loving
companionship throughout all eternity.

St. Anne Novena, Day Seven
O Good Saint Anne, so justly called the mother of the infirm, the cure for those who
suffer from disease, look kindly upon the sick for whom I pray.
Alleviate their sufferings; cause them to sanctify their sufferings by patience and
complete submission to the Divine Will; finally deign to obtain health for them and with it
the firm resolution to honor Jesus, Mary, and yourself by the faithful performance of
duties.
But, merciful Saint Anne, I ask you above all for the salvation of my soul, rather than
bodily health, for I am convinced that this fleeting life is given us solely to assure us a
better one. I cannot obtain that better life without the help of God\s graces. I earnestly
beg them of you for the sick and for myself, especially the petition for which I am making
in this novena
through the merits of our Lord Jesus Christ, through the intercession of His Immaculate
Mother, and through your efficacious and powerful mediation, I pray.

St. Anne Novena, Day Eight
Remember, O Saint Anne, you whose name signifies grace and mercy, that never was it
known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, and sought your
intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto you, good, and kind
mother; I take refuge at your feet, burdened with the weight of my sins. O holy mother of
the Immaculate Virgin Mary, despise not my petition
but hear me and grant my prayer.

Most holy mother of the Virgin Mary, glorious Saint Anne, I, a miserable sinner, confiding
in your kindness, choose you today as my special advocate. I offer all my interests to
your care and maternal solicitude. O my very good mother and advocate, deign to
accept me and to adopt me as your child.
O glorious Saint Anne, I beg you, by the passion of my most loving Jesus, the Son of
Mary, your most holy daughter, to assist me in all the necessities both of my body and
my soul. Venerable Mother, I beg you to obtain for me the favor I seek in this novena
and the grace of leading a life perfectly conformable in all things to the Divine Will. I
place my soul in your hands and in those of your kind daughter. I ask for your favor in
order that, appearing under your patronage before the Supreme Judge, He may find me
worthy of enjoying His Divine Presence in your holy companionship in Heaven.

St. Anthony Novena Well known for helping people find lost things. He was a Franciscan
and is beloved by many.
St. Anthony Novena
Though St. Anthony first joined the Augustinian Order, he
eventually left it when he was 26 years old and joined the
Franciscan Order around 1220 in the hopes of becoming a
martyr for his faith. Through his work in Padua in Italy, he
became a loved and admired Saint in the Catholic Church,
sharing the faith through simplicity which led to him
becoming a Doctor of the Church.
St. Anthonys Feast Day is traditionally celebrated on June
13th, but you can pray a novena to him any time.
He is often invoked for helping to recover lost items,
among other intentions.

O holy St. Anthony, you are known for the power and
abundance of your miracles. Jesus came into your arms as a humble little child. Pray for

More About St. Anthony of Padua
Saint Anthony was born to a wealthy family in Portugal where he was raised, but at an
early age and against the wishes of his parents, he left home to join a religious
community
in
the
outskirts
of
Lisbon.
After he became a priest, he joined the Augustinian order. Shortly after his time there, he
met five Franciscans who were on their way to preach the Gospel in Morocco. He was
very attracted to their simple and evangelical lifestyle. When they were martyred while
preaching, St. Anthony was inspired by their example and he also became a Franciscan
in 1220.
He had hoped that he would also become a martyr, and he actually only lived ten more
years after he joined the Franciscan Order.
It is said that St. Anthonys teaching of the Catholic Faith was so simple that even the
most innocent child could understand it. He was called the, hammer of the Heretics, as
his protection against their lies was to use the Holy name of Mary.
St. Anthony wanted to profess the Catholic Faith with his entire being; with his heart,
with his mind, and with his words at every single moment of his life. It is perhaps
because of that great intention, that when his body was exhumed after his death, his
body had decayed but his tongue remained uncorrupted.

Augustine is one of the greatest defenders of the Catholic faith and the
patron saint of searchers. At the end of nine days of prayer, we hope to
find the God that saved Saint Augustine waiting to deliver us from
temporal concerns through his kind intercession.
You will be inspired by reflecting on the life of Saint Augustine and his
transformation from a life of sin and iniquity to become one of the greatest
saints the church has ever known.
About St. Augustine

St. Augustine was born in Africa to Saint Monica and spent the early part of his life living
in sin and depravity. Though he was brought up as a Christian, he abandoned Christianity
in favor of the loose morals espoused by a religious group called the Manicheans. During
St. Augustines dark days, his mother Saint Monica incessantly prayed for his conversion
back into the fold of Gods Grace, aided also by prayers of the Bishop of Milan, St.
Ambrose.
A highly intelligent man, even then St. Augustine used to compare his life to Christian
morals but was not confident he would be able to lead a pure life. After hearing of two
simple men being converted, he decried the cowardice that prevented a learned person
like him from pursuing the Kingdom of God. He believed that he heard Gods command
when he heard a child singing Take up and read, and in compliance read the first
passage of the Letters of Saint Paul which advised people to put away all impurity and to
live in imitation of Jesus.
He was baptized at Easter on 387 A.D. and went on to become one of the most
prominent defenders of the faith. At his conversion, he sold his possessions and lived a
life of poverty, service to the poor and prayer until the end of his life. He founded the
Order of Saint Augustine, who continued his early work to educate the faithful. His search
for truth resulted in his clear explanations of Roman Catholic beliefs, including
theological writings on creation, original sin, devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and
biblical interpretation.
St. Augustine is revered as the Patron Saint of searchers to commemorate his search for
truth and the One True God.

O holy Saint Augustine, who has famously declared that Our hearts were made for you,
O Lord, and they are restless until they rest in you., aid me in my own search for our
Lord that through your intercession I may be granted the wisdom to determine the

St. Clare of Assisi Novena Founder of the, Poor

Clares, and devoted follower of St. Francis of Assisi, St.
Clare led a simple life of poverty and prayer.
St. Clare Novena
St. Clare, also known as St. Clare of Assisi, was 18 years
old when she heard St. Francis of Assisi preaching. His
teachings influenced her to change her whole life and
dedicate it to God. She became the first female,
Franciscan. Clare and Francis became lifelong friends
and he was her spiritual guide.
Clare founded the Franciscan Nuns of the Second Order:
the Poor Clares. The Poor Clares depended only on
almsgiving and had complete faith on God to provide for
them through other people. She and her order lived a
simple life of poverty, austerity and seclusion from the
world. They went barefoot, slept on the ground, did not eat meat and observed silence.
Clare lived in the convent of San Damiano in Assisi and she served the sick, washed the
feet of beggars, and prayed fervently. Although she never left the convent, she had such
a great influence that popes, cardinals and bishops often came to consult her. Her Feastday is August 11th, but you can pray her novena at anytime.

Dearest Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We praise you and the fruits of your

When your convent was about to be attacked, you placed the Eucharist at the gates,
fearlessly prayed and your attackers left. Show us how to be fearless in our faith as you
were. So that we may not fear the suffering in our world today but instead triumph over
it!

Saint Dymphna was born in Ireland during the 7th century. Her feast day is traditionally
celebrated on May 15; but of course, you can pray through her intercession any time!
Saint Dymphna is usually associated with accounts of miraculous cures of mental illness

More About St. Dymphna
We dont know very much about Saint Dymphna. A lot of the history that we do know
comes from oral tradition and written stories. But what we do know is that she was born
in the 7th century in Ireland to a beautiful devout Christian mother, and to a pagan
father who was also an Irish Chief.
When her mother died, her father became immensely depressed, and Saint Dymphna
also suffered during that time. Her father looked for a replacement wife, and he was told
by his advisors to pursue his daughter as his new wife.
Driven mad by his depression, he made advances on his daughter. Saint Dymphna fled
to Belgium with her confessor and took refuge in a Chapel near the present day site of
Gheel. Her fathers spies, however, tracked her down and her father found begged
Dymphna to return to Ireland with him.
Dymphna refused, and her father decapitated her. At the time, she was only 15 years
old.
A shrine was built on the spot where she was buried in Gheel, Belgium, and many
miracles have taken place there since.

St. Francis Novena Founder of the Franciscan order whose holiness and tireless work
helped reform the Church.
St. Francis of Assisi Novena
Though he chose not to be ordained a priest, St. Francis is

one of the most revered saints of the church. The great respect accorded to St. Francis is
primarily due to his life of service, insistence on the practice of absolute poverty, and
great humility. He founded the Order of the Friars Minor, co-founded the Poor Clares, and
the Order of St. Francis.
About St. Francis of Assisi
St. Francis was born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, to a rich silk merchant on 1181 AD.
His nickname Francesco means the Frenchman, given by his father probably because
of his love for anything French. His mother was a French woman of noble birth.
He became a soldier early in life and fought for Assisi. In 1204, while recovering from an
illness, he had a vision of which caused him to return to Assisi. There his spiritual
awakening followed. He spent a lot of time asking God for direction and caring for poor
people, including lepers.
Another vision followed of Christ asking him to repair His church. St. Francis perceived
this as directing him to repair a local church, so he sold cloth from his fathers store to
help fund the repairs. His father became angry, so St. Francis renounced all worldly
possession and spent his time as a beggar, restoring many other churches in the area.
In 1209, after hearing a sermon about preaching the Good News, he started doing just
that and living in poverty. He was soon joined by other friends, mostly from the educated
class, who joined his life as a beggar. One of the most famous saints he inspired was St.
Clare of Assisi, with whom he co-founded the womens order of the Poor Clares.
He is renowned for his love of animals, the environment, and his desire for peace. He
even went to see a the muslim leader of Egypt to seek peace.
He was graced with the stigmata shortly before his death on Oct. 3, 1226. He died
singing psalms of praise. He was canonized on July 16, 1228, by Pope Gregory IX. His
feast day is celebrated on Oct. 4.

love may be, and often are, expressions of egotism or passion; but deeds are proofs of

Lord, Fulton Sheen learned obedience at the school of Mary. He had such a great
relationship with her. He knew that when he went before the judgment seat of Christ You

If we followed the same rules for health that we do about religion, we would all be
bedridden. It is not enough to talk about the necessity of health; we must do something
practical about it for example, eat, exercise, and rest. So it is with religion. We must
nourish ourselves with the truths of God, exercise our spiritual muscles in prayer, mortify
ourselves of those things which are harmful to the soul, and be just as scrupulous in
avoiding moral evil as we are in avoiding physical evil. Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen
Lord, Fulton Sheen did not ask others to go to confession or visit our Lord an hour a day
without doing it himself. He practiced what he preached. Guard us from hypocrisy and
help us to lead others to you through our actions.
The better we become, the less conscious we are of our goodness. If anyone admits to
being a saint, he is close to being a devil. Jean Jacques Rousseau believed that of all
men, he was the most perfect, but he had so many cracks in his soul that he abandoned
his children after their birth. The more saintly we become, the less conscious we are of
being holy. A child is cute so long as he does not know that he is cute. As soon as he
thinks he is, he turns into a brat. True goodness is unconscious. Archbishop Fulton J.

Lord, Fulton Sheen always thought of himself as an unworthy servant and never thought
himself a saint. Help us to be humble in our service and to realize as Fulton Sheen
realized that all good works come from You.

Saint Gianna Beretta Molla was a physician, surgeon and

pediatric doctor. Her work in the medical field was her mission and she worked
especially with mothers, babies, the elderly and the poor.
She married and dedicated herself to forming a truly Christian family. She had three
children and during her fourth pregnancy, Gianna developed a fibroma on her uterus.
She refused an abortion that would save her life and chose to save the babys life
instead.
She gave birth to a healthy baby, however, Gianna died 7 days later. In the homily at her
canonization Mass, Pope John Paul II called Gianna a significant messenger of divine
love. Saint Gianna is the patron of mothers, physicians and unborn children.

pagan gods. In defending his faith in Christ, Saint Ignatius was martyred.
I prefer death in Christ Jesus to power over the farthest limits of the earth. He who died

The feast day of Saint Joan of Arc is traditionally celebrated on

May 30th as it was the day that she was burned at the stake in Rouen, France; but of
course, you can pray through her strong intercession any time!
Since the creation of her feast day, Saint Joan of Arc has been one of the most popular
saints in the history of the Catholic Church. It actually took more than 400 years after her
death until she was canonized by Pope Benedict XV in 1920.
Saint Joan, also known as the Maid of Heaven, is often invoked for strength and courage,
which she herself exemplified throughout her life as she followed Gods direction and led
the French army to several victories during the Hundred Years War.

About St. Joan of Arc
Saint Joan of Arc was born on January 6, 1412 to very pious parents in Domremy, France.
At a very early age, she heard the voice of God in her fathers garden, followed later by
hearing the voices of Saint Michael, St. Catherine and St. Margaret. These voices told her
to go to the King of France to help him reconquer Frances liberty.
After much opposition, Saint Joan was finally given a small army that raised a siege at
Orleans. This was the first of many battles that the French army won by her leadership
and guidance. Furthermore, those victories led to the coronation of Charles VII, which
was a central part of her mission.
After King Charles VIIs coronation, however, Saint Joan was captured and sold to the
British, who only saw her as a heretic. The British put her on trial, and after refusing to
retract her statements that the voices she heard were from the saints of God, the British
then convicted and sentenced her to burn at the stake. She was condemned to death as
a heretic, sorceress and adulteress. She was nineteen years old.
I fear nothing for God is with me, she said.
When she was being burned at the stake, she asked someone to make a small crucifix
which she put in the top of her dress, while a priest held one up for her to look at as she
died. Witnesses said she met her fate with composure and bravery.
Many stories assert that Saint Joan of Arcs heart did not burn with the rest of her body,
and that the English ultimately threw her remains and ashes into the Seine River so
there wouldnt be any relics.

About St. John Vianney

St. John Vianneys life story is one of how determination to serve the Lord triumphed over
the many obstacles he met along the way.
Though a very simple and humble person, St. John Vianney became renowned for
converting sinners with gentle words. He would spend eleven to sixteen hours per day
just
to
hear
confessions
and
convert
sinners.
St. John Vianney was born Jean-Baptiste-Marie Vianney, in Dardilly, France on 8 May
1786, as the fourth of six children of Matthieu Vianney and Marie Beluze. From his devout
Catholic family he learned to be deeply religious to an extent where he has been known
to practice mortification from his early youth.
When the French Revolution came, many people expressed disapproval of the clergy who
were seen as burdens of the state. Masses were declared illegal so Johns family had to
attend masses held by priests in secret locations. The sacrifices by the priests, in the
eyes of young John, was very heroic and he learned to look up to them. Through these
brave priests, John was able to receive the sacraments.
The Catholic Church reestablished itself in France in 1802. In 1806 John enrolled at a
school run by M. Balley in a village called Ecully. He had a very difficult time learning
there, especially Latin.After some time, Balley recognized his leanings toward a religious
vocation, and assisted him in his studies.
By 1809 Napoleon had declared war on Spain, and John was one of those who were
conscripted. By some form of divine intervention perhaps, John first missed his
regiments deployment, then was led to join a group of deserters. A general amnesty for
deserters in 1810 allowed him to continue pursuing his studies.
He continued his studies but again faced problems when the major seminary rejected
him for being too slow. He was later admitted at the request of Balley, who reasoned out
that his piety compensated for his ignorance. He was ordained on 12 August 1815, and
said his first mass the very next day. He was assigned as an assistant to Balley at Ecully.
In 1818, a few years after the death of his mentor M. Balley, John was appointed Parish
Priest of Ars. It was in this village of only 230 people where John Vianney realized the
adverse effect the French Revolution had on religion, spirituality and morals. He found
that people, for the most part, did not find religion relevant.
John set out to effect a spiritual renewal by attacking the social ills he saw in his homilies
and in the confessional. Soon the effects of his homilies and especially his work in the
confessional became so famous that people from other places visited just to have him
hear their confessions. This became the focal point of his ministry that the bishop even
asked him to forego retreats in order to continue saving lost souls.
St. John heard confessions eleven to sixteen hours each day just to accommodate the
pilgrims coming to Ars. In 1843, he became very ill and was only cured through the
intercession of St. Philomena, of whom he was a great devotee.
St. John wanted to live the life of a monk, and tried to leave Ars many times, but had to
come back. He died in 1859, and was canonized by Pope Pious XI in 1925. His feast day
is August 4.
Among the miracles attributed to him were his ability to continue serving despite having
very little food or rest, his supernatural knowledge of the future and the past, obtaining
for the poor in his care, and the ability to cure the sick, especially children.

More About St. Joseph

Most of everything we know about Saint Joseph comes from Scripture. There is some
disagreement about his genealogy, but both Mark and Matthew say his descent is from
David, the greatest king of Israel and yet, he was a very humble, working man. He was
a carpenter.
It is said that it was probably in Nazareth that St. Joseph was betrothed to and married
Mary. After discovering that Mary was pregnant, also after their betrothal, he knew that
the child was not his and as such, he had planned on divorcing her quietly.
However, an angel came to him in a dream and told him that the child Mary was carrying
was the son of God. Immediately upon hearing this, Joseph took Mary as his wife.
The angel came a second time to tell him his family was in danger, and he also reacted
immediately by leaving everything behind him his family, friends, and all that he
owned to go to Egypt with Mary and their newborn baby, Jesus.
There is a lot we dont know about St. Joseph, but we do know that he loved Jesus as his
own son, he respected God and he was a righteous man. (Matthew 1:18)

About St. Jude

St. Maria Goretti Novena The youngest canonized saint in the history of the Church,
known for her intercessory prayer for purity, chastity and miracles.

About St. Maria Goretti

St. Maria Goretti is the youngest canonized saint in the Church. The attendance at her
canonization exceeded one half million souls, the largest of any canonization up to that
point and time. And when you learn more about Saint Maria Goretti, its not hard to tell
why so many people showed up ;)
Saint Maria Goretti was born to a poor farming family in Italy. Maria was one of six
children. The family lived and worked on the property of another familys farm, the
Serenellis family farm. The Serenelli family consisted of the father and the son,
Alessandro. The Gorettis lived downstairs on the property while the Serenellis lived
upstairs.
When Maria was only 9 years old, her father died from malaria. After that, Maria had to
begin taking care of the rest of the children in the family while her mom worked in the
fields. She also cleaned and cooked for the Serenellis, and all the while, she did not
complain. Rather, she was a source of encouragement and joy for her mother. She would
told her mom that Jesus would take care of them.
Maria was a pious child. She attended Mass often, loved the Lord with all her heart, and
she grew in many virtues. She was also very beautiful.
Alessandro Serenelli noticed her beauty and began to have impure thoughts of her. He
spoke to her cruelly and often would make sexual advances on her. Maria would always
rebuke his advances and say, No, never, that is a sin! God forbids that and we would go
to hell!
This harassment continued for months and Maria tried to avoid Alessandro.
On July 5, 1902, Alessandro approached Maria one more time and told her that if she
didnt allow him to have sex with her that he would kill her. She again refused. She said
she would rather die than allow him to do what he wanted to do to her.
In a rage, Alessandro stabbed Maria nine times with a file, which was used to sharpen
farm tools. The file passed through Marias small body from the front all the way through
to the back. Maria was only 11 at the time.
She was found and taken to the hospital where she had surgery, but she was not going
to survive. She died the next day, but not first without forgiving her attacker. Her last
words were, I forgive Alessandro Serenelli and I want him with me in heaven forever.
St. Maria Gorettis feast day is July 6th.

death. Even at the age of 11, you held dear to your heart what is dear to our Lords: your
purity. Pray for me that I may do the same, especially when I am tempted. Please pray
that God will give me the strength to avoid sin and yes to a life which will lead to eternity
in Heaven with you and our Lord.

O St. Maria Goretti, beautiful model of love, your love for God was so clear in how you
cared for your family during such hardships and in how you loved your enemies even
unto death. Even at the age of 11, you understood what it meant to love the Lord and to

pray that I will truly be able to serve my family joyfully, and others who need my help
and love. And most of all, pray that our Lord will come first in my heart.

O St. Maria Goretti, beautiful model of forgiveness, pray for me. Even at the age of 11,
you did not withhold forgiveness from your attacker. You didnt wish him unwell. On the
contrary, you wanted Heaven for him. You loved him in that way. Pray for me that I, too,
will be able to love my enemies like you did. Pray that I will want Heaven for them.
Please pray that it will become easier and easier to forgive those who have hurt me and
those who will hurt me. Please pray for my own healing from these past hurts so that I
can move forward and offer forgiveness.

Day 4:
O St. Maria Goretti, beautiful model of chastity, you guarded your virginity with such
fervor. Even at the age of 11, you knew the value of the virtue of chastity. Please pray
that I will become better at practicing chastity in my own life. Pray that I will learn to live
a life in which desire is subservient to reason. Please pray that I will be able to love as
Jesus does: selflessly.

Day 5:
O St. Maria Goretti, beautiful model of mercy, pray for me. Gods mercy is the only hope
for mankind. I know we are called to imitate our Fathers mercy to those around us, but it
is hard, and I often fail. But you, even at the age of 11, were strong and courageous
enough to offer mercy to your attacker, the one who hurt you the very most. Please pray
that I will be able to do the same to those who hurt me. Please pray that I will not
consider their unworthiness, but that I may consider our Lord, as you did.

Day 6:
O St. Maria Goretti, beautiful model of living a holy, everyday life, pray for me. I often
feel as though my life must be extraordinary if I am to be a saint, but you show me
another way. You show me that I can be a saint if I love our Lord with all my heart, and if I
serve my family and put them before me. Please pray that I may be selfless as you were,
and that I can learn to deny my own desires so that I can fulfill our Lords will.

Day 7:
O St. Maria Goretti, beautiful model of christian suffering, pray for me. You carried your
cross so courageously while you suffered through surgery without anesthesia. You
thirsted and were not able to be given water, and you accepted that cross because you
loved our Lord. Pray for me, St. Maria Goretti, that I will become better at carrying my
cross. Pray that I will not complain about my cross, and that I will remember to offer it up
to our Lord, for I know that He does not waste any ounce of suffering given to Him.

O St. Maria Goretti, patron of youth, please pray for the children in my life and the youth
across the world. Please pray that their faith may be as strong as yours was when you
were 11 years old. Please pray that I may do what I can to support children in their faith,
and to encourage them to love our Lord, to put Him first in their lives, and to follow His

O St. Maria Goretti, patron of victims of rape, please pray for all those who have been
sexually assaulted. Please pray for their healing, for comfort, and for peace for them.
Please pray that we, as a society, may be able to better protect those who are

Saint Philip Neri, also known as the Apostle of

Rome, was an Italian priest in the 16th century. He is especially noted for founding a
society of secular priests called the Congregation of the Oratory.
Saint Philip Neri is also especially known for showing the humorous side of holiness, as
well as for being extremely humble as humility was one of the most important virtues
he tried to teach others.
When asked how to pray, Saint Philip Neri would respond, Be humble and obedient, and
the Holy Spirit will teach you.
His feast day is on May 26th, but you can pray through his intercession any time!

Day 1 Philips Humility
If Philip heard of anyone having committed a crime, he would say, Thank God that I
have not done worse.
At confession he would shed abundance of tears, and say, I have never done a good
action.
When a penitent showed that she could not bear the rudeness shown towards him by
certain persons who were under great obligations to him, he answered her, If I were
humble, God would not send this to me.
When one of his spiritual children said to him, Father, I wish to have something of yours
for devotion, for I know you are a Saint, he turned to her with a face full of anger, and
broke out into these words: Begone with you! I am a devil, and not a saint.
To another who said to him, Father, a temptation has come to me to think that you are
not what the world takes you for, he made answer: Be sure of this, that I am a man like
my neighbours, and nothing more.
If he heard of any who had a good opinion of him, he used to say, O poor me! how many
poor girls will be greater in Paradise than I shall be!
He avoided all marks of honour. He could not bear to receive any signs of respect. When
people wished to touch his clothes, and knelt as he passed by, he used to say, Get up!
get out of my way! He did not like people to kiss his hand; though he sometimes let
them do so, lest he should hurt their feelings.
He was an enemy to all rivalry and contention. He always took in good part everything
that was said to him. He had a particular dislike of affectation, whether in speaking, or in
dressing, or in anything else.
He could not bear two-faced persons; as for liars, he could not endure them, and was
continually reminding his spiritual children to avoid them as they would a pestilence.
He always asked advice, even on affairs of minor importance. His constant counsel to his
penitents was, that they should not trust in themselves, but always take the advice of
others, and get as many prayers as they could.
He took great pleasure in being lightly esteemed, nay, even despised.
He had a most pleasant manner of transacting business with others, great sweetness in
conversation, and was full of compassion and consideration.
He had always a dislike to speak of himself. The phrases I said, I did, were rarely in
his mouth. He exhorted others never to make a display of themselves, especially in those
things which tended to their credit, whether in earnest or in joke.
As St. John the Evangelist, when old, was continually saying, Little children, love one
another, so Philip was ever repeating his favourite lesson, Be humble; think little of
yourselves.
He said that if we did a good work, and another took the credit of it to himself, we ought
to rejoice and thank God.
He said no one ought to say, Oh! I shall not fall, I shall not commit sin, for it was a clear
sign that he would fall. He was greatly displeased with those who made excuses for
themselves, and called such persons. My Lady Eve, because Eve defended herself
instead
of
being
humble.
Prayer
Philip, my glorious patron, who didst count as dross the praise, and even the good
esteem of men, obtain for me also, from my Lord and Saviour, this fair virtue by thy
prayers. How haughty are my thoughts, how contemptuous are my words, how ambitious
are my works. Gain for me that low esteem of self with which thou wast gifted; obtain for
me a knowledge of my own nothingness, that I may rejoice when I am despised, and
ever seek to be great only in the eyes of my God and Judge.
Day 2 Philips Devotion
The inward flame of devotion in Philip was so intense that he sometimes fainted in
consequence of it, or was forced to throw himself upon his bed, under the sickness of
divine love.
When he was young he sometimes felt this divine fervour so vehemently as to be unable
to contain himself, throwing himself as if in agony on the ground and crying out, No
more, Lord, no more.
What St. Paul says of himself seemed to be fulfilled in Philip: I am filled with consolation
I over-abound with joy.
Yet, though he enjoyed sweetnesses, he used to say that he wished to serve God, not out
of interest that is, because there was pleasure in it but out of pure love, even though
he felt no gratification in loving Him.
When he was a layman, he communicated every morning. When he was old, he had
frequent ecstacies during his Mass.
Hence it is customary in pictures of Philip to paint him in red vestments, to record his
ardent desire to shed his blood for the love of Christ.
He was so devoted to his Lord and Saviour that he was always pronouncing the name of
Jesus with unspeakable sweetness. He had also an extraordinary pleasure in saying the
Creed, and he was so fond of the Our Father that he lingered on each petition in such a
way that it seemed as if he never would get through them.
He had such a devotion to the Blessed Sacrament that, when he was ill, he could not
sleep till he had communicated.
When he was reading or meditating on the Passion he was seen to turn as pale as ashes,
and his eyes filled with tears.
Once when he was ill, they brought him something to drink. He took the glass in his
hand, and when he was putting it to his mouth stopped, and began to weep most bitterly.
He cried out, Thou, my Christ, Thou upon the Cross wast thirsty, and they gave Thee
nothing but gall and vinegar to drink; and I am in bed, with so many comforts around
me, and so many persons to attend to me.
Yet Philip did not make much account of this warmth and acuteness of feeling; for he said
that Emotion was not Devotion, that tears were no sign that a man was in the grace of
God, neither must we suppose a man holy merely because he weeps when he speaks of
religion.
Philip was so devoted to the Blessed Virgin that he had her name continually in his
mouth. He had two ejaculations in her honour. One, Virgin Mary, Mother of God, pray to
Jesus for me. The other, simply Virgin Mother, for he said that in those two words all
possible praises of Mary are contained.
He had also a singular devotion to St. Mary Magdalen, on whose vigil he was born, and
for the Apostles St. James and St. Philip; also for St. Paul the Apostle, and for St. Thomas
of
Aquinum,
Doctor
of
the
Church.
Prayer
Philip, my glorious Patron, gain for me a portion of that gift which thou hadst so
abundantly. Alas! thy heart was burning with love; mine is all frozen towards God, and
alive only for creatures. I love the world, which can never make me happy; my highest
desire is to be well off here below. O my God, when shall I learn to love nothing else but
Thee? Gain for me, O Philip, a pure love, a strong love, and an efficacious love, that,
loving God here upon earth, I may enjoy the sight of Him, together with thee and all
saints, hereafter in heaven.
Day 3 Philips Exercise of Prayer
From very boyhood the servant of God gave himself up to prayer, until he acquired such
a habit of it, that, wherever he was, his mind was always lifted up to heavenly things.
Sometimes he forgot to eat; sometimes, when he was dressing, he left off, being carried
away in his thought to heaven, with his eyes open, yet abstracted from all things around
him.
It was easier for Philip to think upon God, than for men of the world to think of the world.
If anyone entered his room suddenly, he would most probably find him so rapt in prayer,
that, when spoken to, he did not give the right answer, and had to take a turn or two up
and down the room before he fully came to himself.
If he gave way to his habit of prayer in the most trifling degree, he immediately became
lost in contemplation.
It was necessary to distract him lest this continual stretch of mind should be prejudicial
to his health.
Before transacting business, however trivial, he always prayed; when asked a question,
he never answered till he had recollected himself.
He began praying when he went to bed, and as soon as he awoke, and he did not usually
sleep more than four, or at the most five hours.
Sometimes, if anyone showed that he had observed that Philip went to bed late or rose
early in order to pray, he would answer, Paradise is not made for sluggards.
He was more than ordinarily intent on prayer at the more solemn feasts, or at a time of
urgent spiritual necessities; above all, in Holy Week.
Those who could not make long meditations he advised to lift up their minds repeatedly
to God in ejaculatory prayers, as Jesus, increase my faith, Jesus, grant that I may
never offend Thee.
Philip introduced family prayer into many of the principal houses of Rome.
When one of his penitents asked him to teach him how to pray, he answered, Be
humble and obedient, and the Holy Ghost will teach you.
He had a special devotion for the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, and daily poured
out before Him most fervent prayers for gifts and graces.
Once, when he was passing the night in prayer in the Catacombs, that great miracle took
place of the Divine presence of the Holy Ghost descending upon him under the
appearance of a ball of fire, entering into his mouth and lodging in his breast, from which
time he had a supernatural palpitation of the heart.
He used to say that when our prayers are in the way of being granted, we must not leave
off, but pray as fervently as before.
He especially recommended beginners to meditate on the four last things, and used to
say that he who does not in his thoughts and fears go down to hell in his lifetime, runs a
great risk of going there when he dies.
When he wished to show the necessity of prayer, he said that a man without prayer was
an animal without reason.
Many of his disciples improved greatly in this exercise not religious only, but secular
persons, artisans, merchants, physicians, lawyers, and courtiers and became such men
of
prayer
as
to
receive
extraordinary
favours
from
God.
Prayer
Philip, my holy Patron, teach me by thy example, and gain for me by thy intercessions, to
seek my Lord and God at all times and in all places, and to live in His presence and in
sacred intercourse with Him. As the children of this world look up to rich men or men in
station for the favour which they desire, so may I ever lift up my eyes and hands and
heart towards heaven, and betake myself to the Source of all good for those goods which
I need. As the children of this world converse with their friends and find their pleasure in
them, so may I ever hold communion with Saints and Angels, and with the Blessed
Virgin, the Mother of my Lord. Pray with me, O Philip, as thou didst pray with thy
penitents here below, and then prayer will become sweet to me, as it did to them.
Day 4 Philips Purity
Philip well knowing the pleasure which God takes in cleanness of heart, had no sooner
come to years of discretion, and to the power of distinguishing between good and evil,
than he set himself to wage war against the evils and suggestions of his enemy, and
never rested till he had gained the victory. Thus, notwithstanding he lived in the world
when young, and met with all kinds of persons, he preserved his virginity spotless in
those dangerous years of his life.
No word was ever heard from his lips which would offend the most severe modesty, and
in his dress, his carriage, and countenance, he manifested the same beautiful virtue.
One day, while he was yet a layman, some profligate persons impudently tempted him to
commit sin. When he saw that flight was impossible, he began to speak to them of the
hideousness of sin and the awful presence of God. This he did with such manifest
distress, such earnestness, and such fervour, that his words pierced their abandoned
hearts as a sword, and not only persuaded them to give up their horrible thought, but
even reclaimed them from their evil ways.
At another time some bad men, who are accustomed to think no one better than
themselves, invited him on some pretext into their house, under the belief that he was
not what the world took him to be; and then, having got possession of him, thrust him
into a great temptation. Philip, in this strait, finding the doors locked, knelt down and
began to pray to God with such astonishing fervour and heartfelt heavenly eloquence,
that the two poor wretches who were in the room did not dare to speak to him, and at
last themselves left him and gave him a way to escape.
His virginal purity shone out of his countenance. His eyes were so clear and bright, even
to the last years of his life, that no painter ever succeeded in giving the expression of
them, and it was not easy for anyone to keep looking on him for any length of time, for
he dazzled them like an Angel of Paradise.
Moreover, his body, even in his old age, emitted a fragrance which, even in his decrepit
old age, refreshed those who came near him; and many said that they felt devotion
infused into them by the mere smell of his hands.
As to the opposite vice. The ill odour of it was not to the Saint a mere figure of speech,
but a reality, so that he could detect those whose souls were blackened by it; and he
used to say that it was so horrible that nothing in the world could equal it, nothing, in
short, but the Evil Spirit himself. Before his penitents began their confession he
sometimes said, O my son, I know your sins already.
Many confessed that they were at once delivered from temptations by his merely laying
his hands on their heads. The very mention of his name had a power of shielding from
Satan those who were assailed by his fiery darts.
He exhorted men never to trust themselves, whatever experience they might have of
themselves, or however long their habits of virtue.
He used to say that humility was the true guard of chastity; and that not to have pity for
another in such cases was a forerunner of a speedy fall in ourselves; and that when he
found a man censorious, and secure of himself, and without fear, he gave him up for lost.
Prayer
Philip, my glorious Patron, who didst ever keep unsullied the white lily of thy purity, with
such jealous care that the majesty of this fair virtue beamed from thine eyes, shone in
thy hands, and was fragrant in thy breath, obtain for me that gift from the Holy Ghost,
that neither the words nor the example of sinners may ever make any impression on my
soul. And, since it is by avoiding occasions of sin, by prayer, by keeping myself
employed, and by the frequent use of the Sacraments that my dread enemy must be
subdued, gain for me the grace to persevere in these necessary observances.
Day 5 Philips Tenderness of Heart
Philip could not endure the very sight of suffering; and though he abhorred riches, he
always wished to have money to give in alms.
He could not bear to see children scantily clothed, and did all he could to get new clothes
for them.
Oppressed and suffering innocence troubled him especially; when a Roman gentleman
was falsely accused of having been the death of a man, and was imprisoned, he went so
far as to put his cause before the Pope, and obtained his liberation.
A priest was accused by some powerful persons, and was likely to suffer in consequence.
Philip took up his cause with such warmth that he established his innocence before the
public.
Another time, hearing of some gipsies who had been unjustly condemned to hard labour,
he went to the Pope, and procured their freedom. His love of justice was as great as his
tenderness and compassion.
Soon after he became a Priest there was a severe famine in Rome, and six loaves were
sent to him as a present. Knowing that there was in the same house a poor foreigner
suffering from want of food, he gave them all to him, and had for the first day nothing
but olives to eat.
Philip had a special tenderness towards artisans, and those who had a difficulty of selling
their goods. There were two watchmakers, skilful artists, but old and burdened with large
families. He gave them a large order for watches, and contrived to sell them among his
friends.
His zeal and liberality specially shone forth towards poor girls. He provided for them
when they had no other means of provision. He found marriage dowries for some of
them; to others he gave what was sufficient to gain their admittance into convents.
He was particularly good to prisoners, to whom he sent money several times in the
week.
He set no limits to his affection for the shrinking and bashful poor, and was more liberal
in his alms towards them.
Poor students were another object of his special compassion; he provided them not only
with food and clothing, but also with books for their studies. To aid one of them he sold
all his own books.
He felt most keenly any kindness done to him, so that one of his friends said: You could
not make Philip a present without receiving another from him of double value.
He was very tender towards brute animals. Seeing someone put his foot on a lizard, he
cried out, Cruel fellow! what has that poor animal done to you?
Seeing a butcher wound a dog with one of his knives, he could not contain himself, and
had great difficulty in keeping himself cool.
He could not bear the slightest cruelty to be shown to brute animals under any pretext
whatever. If a bird came into the room, he would have the window opened that it might
not
be
caught.
Prayer
Philip, my glorious Advocate, teach me to look at all I see around me after thy pattern as
the creatures of God. Let me never forget that the same God who made me made the
whole world, and all men and all animals that are in it. Gain me the grace to love all
Gods works for Gods sake, and all men for the sake of my Lord and Saviour who has
redeemed them by the Cross. And especially let me be tender and compassionate and
loving towards all Christians, as my brethren in grace. And do thou, who on earth was so
tender to all, be especially tender to us, and feel for us, bear with us in all our troubles,
and gain for us from God, with whom thou dwellest in beatific light, all the aids necessary
for bringing us safely to Him and to thee.
Day 6 Philips Cheerfulness
Philip welcomed those who consulted him with singular benignity, and received them,
though strangers, with as much affection as if he had been a long time expecting them.
When he was called upon to be merry, he was merry; when he was called upon to feel
sympathy with the distressed, he was equally ready.
Sometimes he left his prayers and went down to sport and banter with young men, and
by this sweetness and condescension and playful conversation gained their souls.
He could not bear anyone to be downcast or pensive, because spirituality is always
injured by it; but when he saw anyone grave and gloomy, he used to say, Be merry. He
had a particular and marked leaning to cheerful persons.
At the same time he was a great enemy to anything like rudeness or foolery; for a
buffooning spirit not only does not advance in religion, but roots out even what is already
there.
One day he restored cheerfulness to Father Francesco Bernardi, of the Congregation, by
simply asking him to run with him, saying, Come now, let us have a run together.
His penitents felt that joy at being in his room that they used to say, Philips room is not
a room, but an earthly Paradise.
To others, to merely stand at the door of his room, without going in, was a release from
all their troubles. Others recovered their lost peace of mind by simply looking Philip in
the face. To dream of him was enough to comfort many. In a word, Philip was a perpetual
refreshment to all those who were in perplexity and sadness.
No one ever saw Philip melancholy; those who went to him always found him with a
cheerful and smiling countenance, yet mixed with gravity.
When he was ill he did not so much receive as impart consolation. He was never heard to
change his voice, as invalids generally do, but spoke in the same sonorous tone as when
he was well. Once, when the physicians had given him over, he said, with the Psalmist,
Paratus sum et non sum turbatus (I am ready, and am not troubled). He received
Extreme Unction four times, but with the same calm and joyous countenance.
Prayer
Philip, my glorious Advocate, who didst ever follow the precepts and example of the
Apostle St. Paul in rejoicing always in all things, gain for me the grace of perfect
resignation to Gods will, of indifference to matters of this world, and a constant sight of
Heaven; so that I may never be disappointed at the Divine providences, never
desponding, never sad, never fretful; that my countenance may always be open and
cheerful, and my words kind and pleasant, as becomes those who, in whatever state of
life they are, have the greatest of all goods, the favour of God and the prospect of
eternal bliss.
Day 7 Philips Patience
Philip was for years and years the butt and laughing-stock of all the hangers-on of the
great palaces of the nobility at Rome, who said all the bad of him that came into their
heads, because they did not like to see a virtuous and conscientious man.
This sarcastic talk against him lasted for years and years; so that Rome was full of it, and
through all the shops and counting-houses the idlers and evil livers did nothing but
ridicule Philip.
When they fixed some calumny upon him, he did not take it in the least amiss, but with
the greatest calmness contented himself with a simple smile.
Once a gentlemans servant began to abuse him so insolently that a person of
consideration, who witnessed the insult, was about to lay hands on him; but, when he
saw with what gentleness and cheerfulness Philip took it, he restrained himself, and ever
after counted Philip as a saint.
Sometimes his own spiritual children, and even those who lay under the greatest
obligations to him, treated him as if he were a rude and foolish person; but he did not
show any resentment.
Once, when he was Superior of the Congregation, one of his subjects snatched a letter
out of his hand; but the saint took the affront with incomparable meekness, and neither
in look, nor word, nor in gesture betrayed the slightest emotion.
Patience had so completely become a habit with him, that he was never seen in a
passion. He checked the first movement of resentful feeling; his countenance calmed
instantly,
and
he
reassumed
his
usual
modest
smile.
Prayer
Philip, my holy Advocate, who didst bear persecution and calumny, pain and sickness,
with so admirable a patience, gain for me the grace of true fortitude under all the trials
of this life. Alas! how do I need patience! I shrink from every small inconvenience; I
sicken under every light affliction; I fire up at every trifling contradiction; I fret and am
cross at every little suffering of body. Gain for me the grace to enter with hearty goodwill into all such crosses as I may receive day by day from my Heavenly Father. Let me
imitate thee, as thou didst imitate my Lord and Saviour, that so, as thou hast attained
heaven by thy calm endurance of bodily and mental pain, I too may attain the merit of
patience, and the reward of life everlasting.
Day 8 Philips Care for the Salvation of Souls
When he was a young priest, and had gathered about him a number of spiritual persons,
his first wish was to go with them all to preach the gospel to the heathen of India, where
St. Francis Xavier was engaged in his wonderful career and he only gave up the idea in
obedience to the holy men whom he consulted.
As to bad Christians at home, such extreme desire had he for their conversion, that even
when he was old he took severe disciplines in their behalf, and wept for their sins as if
they had been his own.
While a layman, he converted by one sermon thirty dissolute youths.
He was successful, under the grace of God, in bringing back almost an infinite number of
sinners to the paths of holiness. Many at the hour of death cried out, Blessed be the day
when first I came to know Father Philip! Others, Father Philip draws souls to him as the
magnet draws iron.
With a view to the fulfilment of what he considered his special mission, he gave himself
up entirely to hearing confessions, exclusive of every other employment. Before sunrise
he had generally confessed a good number of penitents in his own room. He went down
into the church at daybreak, and never left it till noon, except to say Mass. If no penitents
came, he remained near his confessional, reading, saying office, or telling his beads. If
he was at prayer, if at his meals, he at once broke off when his penitents came.
He never intermitted his hearing of confessions for any illness, unless the physician
forbade it.
For the same reason he kept his room-door open, so that he was exposed to the view of
everyone who passed it.
He had a particular anxiety about boys and young men. He was most anxious to have
them always occupied, for he knew that idleness was the parent of every evil.
Sometimes he made work for them, when he could not find any.
He let them make what noise they pleased about him, if in so doing he was keeping
them from temptation. When a friend remonstrated with him for letting them so interfere
with him, he made answer: So long as they do not sin, they may chop wood upon my
back.
He was allowed by the Dominican Fathers to take out their novices for recreation. He
used to delight to see them at their holiday meal. He used to say, Eat, my sons, and do
not scruple about it, for it makes me fat to watch you; and then, when dinner was over,
he made them sit in a ring around him, and told them the secrets of their hearts, and
gave them good advice, and exhorted them to virtue.
He had a remarkable power of consoling the sick, and of delivering them from the
temptations with which the devil assails them.
To his zeal for the conversion of souls, Philip always joined the exercise of corporal acts
of mercy. He visited the sick in the hospitals, served them in all their necessities, made
their beds, swept the floor round them, and gave them their meals.
Prayer
Philip, my holy Patron, who wast so careful for the souls of thy brethren, and especially of
thy own people, when on earth, slack not thy care of them now, when thou art in heaven.
Be with us, who are thy children and thy clients; and, with thy greater power with God,
and with thy more intimate insight into our needs and our dangers, guide us along the
path which leads to God and to thee. Be to us a good father; make our priests blameless
and beyond reproach or scandal; make our children obedient, our youth prudent and
chaste, our heads of families wise and gentle, our old people cheerful and fervent, and
build us up, by thy powerful intercessions, in faith, hope, charity, and all virtues.
Day 9 Philips Miraculous Gifts
Philips great and solid virtues were crowned and adorned by the divine Majesty with
various and extraordinary favours, which he in vain used every artifice, if possible, to
hide.
It was the good-pleasure of God to enable him to penetrate His ineffable mysteries and
to know His marvellous providences by means of ecstasies, raptures, and visions, which
were of frequent occurrence during the whole of his life.
A friend going one morning to confession to him, on opening the door of his room softly,
saw the Saint in the act of prayer, raised upon his feet, his eyes looking to heaven, his
hands extended. He stood for a while watching him, and then going close to him spoke
to him but the saint did not perceive him at all. This state of abstraction continued
about eight minutes longer; then he came to himself.
He had the consolation of seeing in vision the souls of many, especially of his friends and
penitents, go to heaven. Indeed, those who were intimate with him held it for certain,
that none of his spiritual children died without his being certified of the state of their
souls.
Philip, both by his sanctity and experience, was able to discriminate between true and
false visions. He was earnest in warning men against being deluded, which is very easy
and probable.
Philip was especially eminent, even among saints, for his gifts of foretelling the future
and reading the heart. The examples of these gifts which might be produced would fill
volumes. He foretold the deaths of some; he foretold the recovery of others; he foretold
the future course of others; he foretold the births of children to those who were childless;
he foretold who would be the Popes before their election; he had the gift of seeing things
at a distance; and he knew what was going on in the minds of his penitents and others
around him.
He knew whether his penitents had said their prayers, and for how long they were
praying. Many of them when talking together, if led into any conversation which was
dangerous or wrong, would say: We must stop, for St. Philip will find it out.
Once a woman came to him to confession, when in reality she wished to get an alms. He
said to her: In Gods name, good woman, go away; there is no bread for you and
nothing could induce him to hear her confession.
A man who went to confess to him did not speak, but began to tremble, and when asked,
said, I am ashamed, for he had committed a most grievous sin. Philip said gently: Do
not be afraid; I will tell you what it was and, to the penitents great astonishment, he
told him.
Such instances are innumerable. There was not one person intimate with Philip who did
not affirm that he knew the secrets of the heart most marvellously.
He was almost equally marvellous in his power of healing and restoring to health. He
relieved pain by the touch of his hand and the sign of the Cross. And in the same way he
cured diseases instantaneously at other times by his prayers at other times he
commanded the diseases to depart.
This gift was so well known that sick persons got possession of his clothes, his shoes, the
cuttings
of
his
hair,
and
God
wrought
cures
by
means
of
them.
Prayer
Philip, my holy Patron, the wounds and diseases of my soul are greater than bodily ones,
and are beyond thy curing, even with thy supernatural power. I know that my Almighty
Lord reserves in His own hands the recovery of the soul from death, and the healing of all
its maladies. But thou canst do more for our souls by thy prayers now, my dear Saint,
than thou didst for the bodies of those who applied to thee when thou wast upon earth.
Pray for me, that the Divine Physician of the soul, Who alone reads my heart thoroughly,
may cleanse it thoroughly, and that I and all who are dear to me may be cleansed from
all our sins; and, since we must die, one and all, that we may die, as thou didst, in the
grace and love of God, and with the assurance, like thee, of eternal life.
More on St. Philip Neri
Saint Philip Neri was born in 1515 in Florence, Italy. He was spontaneous, a little
impulsive, and very cheerful.
Hes quoted as saying, Cheerfulness strengthens the heart and makes us persevere in a
good life. Therefore the servant of God ought always to be in good spirits.
He was born into a family that was not successful financially, and when St. Philip was
eighteen, he was sent to work with a successful businessman.
During that time, he spent hours praying, which led to his decision to dedicate his life to
God, leaving worldly success behind.
Its noted that Saint Philip Neri liked to pray during the evenings, and that he received
energy during his prayer that enlivened him to serve God throughout the day. He
established a confraternity before being ordained as a Priest in 1551.
Saint Philip loved to hear confessions, but he knew that the young people he
administered to needed more than absolution. He created a group that would do just
that, which was called the Oratory. That soon led to the creation of a church called
Congregation of the Oratory.
Saint Philip Neri died in 1959 after battling a long illness. He was eighty years old.

About St. Philomena
Although very little is known about St. Philomena, devotion to her is widespread. She is
known as a powerful intercessor and many saints and popes have had a devotion to her.
For hundreds of years, St. Philomena was entirely unknown, but then in 1802 the bones
of a young girl were discovered in the catacomb of St. Priscilla in Rome. The tomb
indicated that she was likely a virgin and martyr named Philomena. In 1805 the remains
were moved to Mugnano, Italy and there were soon reports of miraculous healings taking
place there.
According to catholic.org, Her popularity soon became widespread, with her most
memorable devotees being St. John Vianney, St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, St. Peter
Eymard, and St. Peter Chanel. After being miraculously cured, Ven. Pauline Jaricot
insisted that Pope Gregory XVI begin an examination for the beatification of St.
Philomena, who was to become known as the wonder worker. After hundreds of other
miraculous cures, she was beatified in 1837. St. Philomena, who the pope named as the
Patroness of the Living Rosary and the Patroness of the Children of Mary, is the only
person recognized as a saint solely on the basis of her powerful intercession.
