REFLECTIVE FRAMEWORK FOR SOLVING ETHICAL DILEMMAS: Version
1. Identify the problem (What happened? How did it occur?)
I am a mobile RMT. Lisa is a 35-year-old patient who has been getting treatment for over two years every Friday mornings for 90 minutes. She has been struggling with depression for over five years. Lisa has come forward a few times admitting that ending her life has been on her mind a few times. She enjoys the massage treatments and feels that it helps her cope with her symptoms. You are aware that she sees her family MD and psychiatrist on a regular basis for her depression and is taking some medication for her depression. Lisa calls; stating that she is really struggling and cant help but wonder if this is all worth it. She cancels our appointment. She does not give me a chance to respond and hangs up. I have a terrible feeling in my gut. 2. Describe all feelings, attitudes, values, morals and beliefs that arise as a result of this problem. Place concerns in their appropriate column Professional Personal - I would call the cops and let them - I would try to contact her family members and let them know know what is happening what is going on - I would also try to call her and see if shes okay. - I would try to go to her house still and check up on her - I feel really bad for the patient that she is going through this and I wouldnt want her to be alone 3. Reflect on dissonant parts Lisas manner conflicts with my personal morals by attempting to end her life. To be a friend or professional is the hardest decision to make in this situation. 4. Describe the ethical dilemma in one sentence (Include a description of the issue, personal values and conflicting principles eg. ________________ behavior conflicts with my ______________ The way Lisa ended the call conflicts with my personal life and the professional code of conduct that I have to abide by. She leaves the impression that she might try to hurt herself.

5. Review professional resources that can assist in decision making (eg.
Code of ethic, standards of practice, position statements, CMTO website, professional colleague) - Standard 14- Client health says that records are confidential and are -
stored so not to be accessible to unauthorized individuals
Code of Ethic: principle1 respect for persons, responsible for caring and
integrity in relationships 6. Determine appropriate solution. - I shouldnt jump to conclusions and believe that she would harm herself -
without knowing and understanding whats happening.
I would ask her if she would be okay with me speaking to her other health care professionals about her illness and what I should do when I come
across a moment like this.
Letting the police know about the phone call 7. Create an I statement that addresses the ethical dilemma and removes judgment and blame. For the safety of Lisa, I believe that she needs help which is out of my scope of practice. I respect Lisa and I want to make sure she is okay and safe.
