COASTAL GEOLOGY WEB-QUEST

Answer ALL of the questions in your book (or on word and print off at home and stick it in your
book), and do not write on this hand-out.
1. What does the Geology of Britain Viewer show?
2. How can you show that the Geology of Britain Viewer is an example of a G.I.S? (use google to find
out what G.I.S is, include a sketch/diagram in your answer & give further examples of its uses)
3. Look at Figure 1 and answer the following;
a. What is the purpose of/Why would you use the Geology Transparency slider?
b. Why are grid references important when using a map?
c. What does Switch to Basemap allow you to do?

b. Use More on digital geology to help you find out what superficial only and bedrock mean (HINT:
Scroll down to Digithemes)
c. Identify the type of bedrock(s) found under Lulworth Cove. (Click on Bedrock Only for this exercise)
d. Left-Click on the map to bring up information on each type of rock, and explain why there are
differences.
i. To simplify this task focus on just two different types of rock and list the differences.
ii. To complicate this task ensure you have discussed why there are differences and between all
rock types and then link them to coastal processes.
iii. EXTENSION: Explain how these areas of land have formed given that they require coastal
processes to develop.
e. What are the differing ages of the bedrock underneath Lulworth Cove?
f. What type of coastline has formed where Lulworth Cove is, and how can you tell this?
5. Now move east towards Swanage Bay (or type Swanage Bay into the Go to Location).
a. What type of landforms can we expect to see along this stretch of coastline, and how can you tell this
by looking at the geology of the coastline here?
b. Take screen shots of the locations where you would expect to see examples (zoom in to a scale that
is specific to each type) of the following;
i. Headland and bay.
ii. A spit.
iii. A stack.

6. Type-in Wyke Regis into the Go to location bar.


i. Click to Superficial only on the Surface Geology tab.

ii. Identify the landform that the Portland Beach Road travels across to connect Wyke Regis to
the Isle of Portland.
iii. Explain how this coastal feature was formed.

7. For all of the locations that you have found examples of coastal features at today; use google images to find
photos of and add this to your work.

8. EXTENSION TASK. GO BACK (OR ZOOM OUT TO) THE STARTING SCREEN.

a. Click the Earthquake Timeline.


i. Can you explain why there are so many earthquake events in the U.K? remember the
U.K. is not on a plate boundary, so there must be another reason why these events are
taking place. (you can use google to help you with this answer )
ii. Why is the process that cause these earthquakes of real concern for the coastlines in
the south-east of the U.K?

9. Of the three topics studied so far this year which topic would you say you gained a greater understanding of?
10. Thinking back to all of the work you have completed in Geography this year, which piece of work do you think
was your best piece? Why?
11. Of the three topics studied so far this year which topic would you say you are least confident with? Why?
12. Use five words to describe how you feel about Geography. These can five individual words, a short five word
sentence or a mixture of words and a sentence that combined, contain no more than five words.
13. Why do you think Geography is considered an important subject to study?
