Lesson 1 ADAPTAION IN PLANTS

SHORT ANSWERS
1. What is a Habitat? Name the different types of land habits.
Habitat is the natural home of a plant or an animal. The different types of land
habitat are,
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.

Deserts
Hills
Marshes
Plains
Forests
Grasslands
Coastal regions

2. Differentiate between Terrestrial plants and Aquatic plants.

1
2

TERRESTRIAL PLANTS
Plants that grow on land
Eg: Cactus, Pine, Mango, Coconut
trees

AQUATIC PLANTS
Plants that grow in
water
Eg: Lotus, Water lily,
Hydrilla

3. What is Transpiration?
Water is evaporated from the plants leaves through stomata. This
process is called transpiration.
4. What are Breathing roots?
Breathing roots are roots which grow above the soil to breathe.
Eg: Mangrove trees in Marshes
5. Give two examples for deciduous, evergreen trees and aquatic plants.
Deciduous trees: Peepal, Banyan trees
Evergreen trees: Coconut, Mango
Aquatic plants: Lotus, Water lily

LONG ANSWERS:
1. What are the adaptations needed by Desert Plants.
The two adaptations needed by desert plants are
To obtain water from the soil.
To prevent loss of water through transpiration
2. Why does a cactus plant have spines and not leaves?
To prevent loss of water through transpiration
Since leaves are spines, the green stem carries out
photosynthesis.

3. Discuss the adaptations present in a pine tree.

The leaves are needle shaped, tough and evergreen to survive
cold conditions.
The pine tree is conical shape to let off snow fall.

4. Why trees that grow in hills are referred to as conifers.

Trees that grow in the hills are referred to as conifers because they
have cones instead of flowers.

5. What are marshes?

Marshes are wet lands which have plenty of water and clayey soil. The
roots of the plants growing here do not have enough air to breathe.

6. Mention the adaptations found in the plants growing in marshy areas.

The plants in marshes are adapted so that,
Their roots obtain fresh air.
They do not get rotten in water.
Eg: Mangrove trees with breathing roots.
7. What are grasslands? Explain why grasslands are suitable for farming.
Grasslands are large areas of land.
They are covered with grasses and wild flowers.
8. Explain why grasslands are suitable for farming.
The roots of grasses and small plants make the soil rich and bind
it together.
Hence grasslands are suitable for farming.
9. Describe the adaptations of fixed aquatic plants.
Stems are hollow and flexible to float easily
Leaves are broad and flat to get enough air and sunlight

Leaves are waxy to remain water proof

Stomata is present in the upper part of the leaf
