Standards: 5.3.3.A: Identify the roles of the three branches of government
Theme: Three Branches of Government
Lesson Topic: Social Studies

Students will be able to accurately recite the characteristics of each branch of government
Content:
Students will be able to compare and contrast the three branches of government in order to distinguish
between the similarities and differences

Materials:

Motivation:
Discuss current events in politics. Assess prior knowledge and develop schema.
Presentation:

Before:
Anticipatory Set: Teacher asks student what he/she knows about the recent election.

The teacher will then explain that Americas government is a democracy, which is a
government that gets its power from its people. The teacher will write democracy on the
board.
The teacher will assess prior knowledge by asking, What was the important thing that
grown-ups did last week to help decide who would be our new president?. (Vote)
The teacher will write vote on the board under democracy. The teacher will ask, Since
we know that americas government is a democracy, which is a government that gets its power
from its people, why do you think voting is so important for American citizens? (Because
voting gives people the power to decide who their next president will be)
The teacher will then transition the discussion to the topic of the 3 branches of
government. The american government is made up of 3 important parts. These parts are called
the 3 branches of government.
Statement of learning: Today we will learn about the 3 branches of the American
Government.
During:
The teacher will explain that there are 3 important parts that make up our government.
They are called the 3 branches of government.
The teacher will write the title to each branch on the board and create columns; executive
branch, legislative branch, and judicial branch.
The teacher will correctly pronounce the words and prompt the student to repeat.
The teacher will then show a short video that explains the branches of government in
further detail. The teacher will distribute a columned worksheet and mention that we are going to
use this chart to reflect on the video after the video ends.
After the video concludes, the teacher will then question the student about what he/she
learned about the branches of government. The student will explain characteristics of each branch
in his/her own words.
The teacher will then refer to the board to introduce the vocabulary words, congress,
president, and supreme court. The teacher will reflect on what was stated about these words
from the video.
The teacher will ask the student to guess which words are related to each branch of
government. Teacher will scaffold the student if necessary.
The teacher will then write the new vocabulary in their correct columns on the board, and
the student will emulate this on his/her own worksheet.
Formative Assessment Activity: The teacher will give the student 3 pieces of paper; one
red, one white, and one blue. On each paper will be written a branch of government. The teacher
will tell the student that he/she will be given a description of each vocabulary word in random
order, and the student is to hold up the paper with the correlating branch shown. The teacher will
ask the student how he/she arrived at each answer.

Closure activity: Exit slip - 3 branches of government matching worksheet.
