Task Overview:
Extra! Extra! Read all about it! The date is the 28 th of June 1914. Archduke Franz Ferdinand has just been assassinated by a
Serbian nationalist in Bosnia. An all-out European war is right around the corner and you, as journalists for a leading
newspaper must report this on the front-page headline of your next issue. Over the last couple of weeks we have read and
studied about the direct causes and effects of the outbreak of World War I. Imagine the emotion of the citizens, not
knowing what comes next now that their country is at war. It is your job to inform them and now you report these cause and
effects on your front-page as well as the assassination. Your newspaper can come from a country of your choice (Australia,
Britain, Germany, France, Russia etc.) Your country of choice will require specific research on how that particular country
was affected. Use your imagination.
Task Description:
1. Draw up a Research Matrix using key headings about the direct causes and effects of WWI (1914) and conduct additional
research. Maintain a bibliography as you go.
a. Specific research on the country you choose is required.
2. Write a front-page for a newspaper for an A3 piece of paper from a country of your choice. Your article must include:
a. The date
b. A report on the assassination
c. Why it was so significant
d. Why it happened
e. What it means for your country (Has your country declared war? Why?)
f. The imminent effects of the assassination (How many men have enlisted? Has your country forced conscription?)
g. Include relevant images and propaganda posters
3. Remember that you are the main source of news for the people at the time. Televisions werent around yet and neither
was social media, so people are looking at you to report the facts. However, your country will have a bias and this can be
considered.
4. Submit a copy of your assignment, as well as your Research Matrix and bibliography.
