A RCC beam of rectangular section 300 mm wide and overall depth of 850 mm is reinforced
with 4 bars of 25 mm diameter on the tension side. Effective cover = 50 mm. Find the
2
2
ultimate moment of resistance of the section, if fck = 20 N/mm and fy = 415 N/mm . Find
(10 Marks)
the additional reinforcement required to make this a balanced section.
b. A rectangular RC beam is 350 mm x 750 mm, overall in size with an effective cover of 50
2
mm both on tension and compression side. Compression steel area = 564 mm and is
stressed to 3 5 3 N /mm2 . M 20 grade concrete and F e415 steel are used. Cal ulate the steel area
on the tension side to make the section fully effective and total moment of resistance. Also
(10 Marks)
calculate total compression and total tension developed in the section.

a. What is development length? Obtain an expression for development length ia tension. Find
the development for 20 mm diameter TMT bars of grade Fe 500 subjected to tension, if M20
grade concrete is used.
(OS Ma rks)
b. Write a note on necessity of control of crack and factors influencing crack width in an RC
beam.
(OS Marks)
c. A rectangular concrete beam of span 4m is 350 mm x 650 mm in cross sc:ction. Bending ""'
m\.n11ent at support due to uniformiy dis tributed service load is 150 KNM. (inclusive of self
vve}ght) . Effective cover= 50 mm. Calc~late short term deflections. Use M20 grade concrete
and Fe 415 grade steel.
(10 Marks)

A Tee beam slab floor of an office comprises a slab 150 mm thick spanning between ribs of
250 mm wide spaced at 3.2 m centre to centre. Clear span of beam= 7.70 mtr. The beam is
600 mm deep including slab and simply supported over walls of 300 mm wide. Live load on
floor = 4 kN/m 2 . Floor and ceiling finish 0. 75 kN/m 2 . The beam also supports a partition
wall which transmits a load of 12 kN/m. Design one of the intermediate beam for flexure
and shear. Two main bars ate to be bent up neat the support. Also check the beam for
(20 Marks)
deflection control. Assume effective cover= 50 mm.

(04 Marks)
b. Design a simply supported slab for a room with internal dimensions 4 m x Sm. The slab is
supported on 230 mm thick brick wall around. Live load on slab= 3 kN/m 2 and finish load
of 1 kN/m 2 . Assume that slab corners are prevented from lifting up. Use M20 grade concrete

a.

Why does code require all columns to be able to resist a minimum eccentricity of loading?

b.
c.

Enumerate the function of the transeverse reinforcement in a RC colum.'1.

(03 Marks)
Design a circular column to -carry an axial lo~d of 1500kN using lateral ties. The
unsupported length of column = 3.3 m. Check. for slenderness of column and minimum
eccentricity.
(08 Marks)
Determine the reinforcement required for a rectangular column 3_00 mm x 500 mm subjected
to a uniaxial bending moment abo~t major axis. Factored BM = 100 KNM and factored
axial load= 2000 kN. [Use the accompanied chart for the design].
