Lesson Title/Topic: Butterfly life cycle activity

Standards:
Science: K.7 The student will investigate and understand basic needs and life
processes of plants and animals. Key concepts include: c) plants and animals
change as they grow, have varied life cycles, and eventually die
Language Arts: K.1 The student will demonstrate growth in the use of oral language:
a) listen to a variety of literacy forms, including stories and poems

Specific Observable Objective(s):

I can place the life cycle of a butterfly in the correct order.
I can place my body in the correct position of the butterfly life cycle when asked.

Essential Vocabulary: Chrysalis, butterfly, caterpillar

Assessment: I will assess by observing the class while they manipulate their
bodies into the different steps of the butterfly cycle, I will also walk around and
observe the students while they are cutting and gluing the steps of the life cycle
and take anecdotal notes. I will ask questions about butterflies and caterpillars while
reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar book to assess understanding.
Student Considerations: A child with ADHD: He/she can be placed in the front of
the class during the book reading and I would try to ask him/her questions and keep
them involved, ask them to tell the class what life cycle position to put their bodies
in, ask for this child to help pass out glue sticks.
A child with vision difficulties: He/she can be placed closer to the book or given a
book to hold to follow along with, his/her pictures for gluing can be made bigger
Instructional Resources, Materials, and Technology:
The Very Hungry Caterpillar book
Butterfly life cycle pictures (attached)
Scissors
Glue
Smart board with projector
Crayons

Speakers

PROCEDURES:
The Beginning (a.k.a. Anticipatory Set): (10 minutes)
Introduce the class to The Very Hungry Caterpillar book and we will read
and I will ask questions about what they think is going to happen to the
caterpillar next.
Ask the class to stand up and teach them the movements for each step
in the butterfly life cycle: the egg (beginning) curl up like a ball, crawl
like a caterpillar, be as still as a chrysalis, and fly like a butterfly
(flapped arms)
The Middle: (15 minutes)
Hand out papers, scissors, and glue sticks. Explain that they need to cut
out the pictures.
Place extra pictures on smart board and explain what they will do with
each picture. As a class discuss what order they go in and do it
together.
Walk around class and make sure each student has glued on the
pictures in the correct order.
Tell class they can color their pictures and talk about what color each
stage would typically be.
The End (a.k.a. Closing): (5)
Go over the body positions for the butterfly life cycle.
Play the butterfly song and when it says each step do the body position.
