HYDROLOGIC CHARACTERISTICS OF WATERSHED OR STUDY AREA

A. Hydrologic Map

Contour Map of Lipadas Watershed, (Global Mapper).

i.

Location and Coordinates of Proposed Structure

The proposed gabion will be constructed starting at the
upstream part of Lipadas Bridge ( 7 0'24.36"N/ 12529'7.99"E)
and ends 4.16 km upstream of the river (7 2'15.90"N/
12529'17.01"E).

ii.

Delineation of Catchment Area

The diversion point of the drainage area in the map which

is also the starting point of gabion is indicated by a green dot
inside a red circle.

Figure:

iii.

Flow Direction
The flow direction of the longest stream of Lipadas river
passes through barangays of Lumot, Bacarayo, Bankas, Alambre,
Lubogan, and Lipadas then discharges to Davao Gulf.

Relevant Nearby Streamflow and Rainfall Stations

One streamflow station is located near the Lipadas Bridge
(125o 29' 04" longitude, 7o 00' 12" latitude)

Drainage Area, A

Using Global Mapper, the enclosed area of delineation is A

= 143.1 km2 .

Circularity Ratio, C

P
where:
A = 143.1 km2
P = 53.6 km
Therefore:
C=0.626

iii.

Main Channel Slope, S

Length of longest stream = 25.3 km.
Elev. @ 85th percentile of length = 923.24 m.a.s.l
Elev. @ 10th percentile of length = 25.60 m.a.s.l
85th to 10th percentile length = 0.75*25.3 km
= 18.975 km

Stream Frequency, SF
With the aid of Google Earth, streams junctions are plotted
manually from the map.

Drainage Density
Drainage density is the total length of streams and rivers
divided by the area of the basin. It is the measure of how well or
poorly a watershed is drained by stream channels.
Total length of streams, Lt = 55.19 m
Area = 143.1 km2

Climate Type
The climate type in the watershed belongs to Type 1V
classification in which rainfall is more or less evenly distributed
throughout the year.
In Talomo-Lipadas Watershed, PAGASA has recorded and
average rainfall of 2,628 mm based from 2010-2011 rainfall data.
In the figure below, the highest total rains were observed in 2003
(3,028 mm) and the lowest was in 2005 (2,312 mm). On monthly
basis, the highest average monthly rainfall falls on months of May
to October with the maximum rains in July, 300 mm, as recorded.
The least rainfall was recorded from months of February to April
which belongs to summer months.

v.

Land Use Parameter

Lipadas watershed has a land area of 16,796 ha. The data
shown in the figures below reflects the combination of Talomo and
Lipadas watersheds.

vi.

Soil Classification Parameter

Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) conducted an
analysis in the areas of Talomo-Lipadas watershed and found out
that 70% is clay, and the rest are sandy loam, silty loam, and loam
soils. Hence clay soils generally characterize the agricultural areas
of the watershed while loam soils are present near the slopes of Mt.
