Course Description:
This course covers the overview of the computer system and its components, historical highlights, hardware technology, data
representations, application areas, and the impact of the computer in the modern world. It also includes Microsoft Office (MS
Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint) and Internet technology applications.
Program Intended Learning
Outcome (PILO)

Graduates of BS Computer Science should possess the following competencies:


a. An ability to apply knowledge of computing and mathematics appropriate to the discipline;
b. An ability to analyze a problem, and identify & define the computing requirements appropriate to its solution;
c. An ability to apply scientific and engineering methodology to the design, implementation, analysis, and evaluation of
computer-based systems;
d. An ability to function effectively and independently on multi-disciplinary teams to accomplish a common goal;

Course Intended Learning

At the end of this course, the students should be able to :

Examine the evolution of computers, recognize the functional components of the computer systems and analyze their
interconnections
Recognize the arithmetic operations on number systems and associate their applications in hardware component
specifications, operating system and programming languages
Describe and illustrate the various word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software applications
Identify the basic concepts of data communication, networking and Internet connectivity

Appreciate how various computer applications affect society, business and individuals professionally and ethically
