The Truax
1.

Why did the Guardbark want people to leave trees alone? Give at least two reasons.

The Guardbark is dependent on these trees and he thought that the Truax only wanted the materials for greed.

When the Truax was cutting down the trees, he was making a mess.

2.

Why did Truax think it was reasonable to cut some trees? Give at least two reasons.

He and the Guardbark wanted the same thing, to keep the forest in tack without hurting anything.

He learned that new organisms/animals can gain new habitat from the clearing of forest.

3.

Name three ways that Native Americans depended on trees. How did early American settlers use trees? Do we still need trees today?

Firewood- the fire kept the NA warm at night, it cooked their meals, helped with creating medicines, and to bind materials.

Weapons- hunting and protection.

Shelter- to keep warm and safe from the outside world.

We need trees today because trees provide oxygen and we need that to breathe. Trees also provide clothing, food, are used for creating
houses (shelter), etc.

4.

Make a list of at least six products we use that come from trees.

Toothpaste- herbs and fruit?

Pencils- charcoal

Matches- rocks and oil

Tables- rocks and metal

Popsicle Sticks

Shingles- metal

5.

Go back to your list. If we could not cut trees, we would have to use something else to make the products you listed. Beside each product, write
down what we could use to replace the product made from trees.

6.

A "renewable" resource is something that can be "made new again". In other words, we can make more of the resource so that it never has to run
out. What does "nonrenewable" resource mean?

A non-renewable resource is a material that cant be used or created again. Non-renewable resources are to be used wisely because we are
running out.

7.

On your list of replacement products, did you have some products made from oil (like plastics)? Is oil a "renewable" resource or a "nonrenewable" resource?

Matches can be combined with oil to create fire. Oil is a non-renewable resource.

8.

Did you have some replacement products made from metal? Is metal a "renewable" resource or a "non-renewable" resource?

Tables and shingles can be created with metal. Metal is a non-renewable resource.

9.

What does Truax and his friends do to make sure there are plenty of trees?

The Truax and his friends plant 5 tree seeds, one for every tree that was cut down.

10. Truax and other US timber cutters do many things (like replanting and controlling forest fires) to make sure we have plenty of trees for the
future. How does that make you feel?

This makes me feel happy, people are helping the environment and helping our world be a better place for both humans and animals alike.
