2.Key Scriptures

John 6:5357 Jesus said to them, Very

truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh
of the Son of Man and drink his blood,
you have no life in you. 54 Whoever
eats my flesh and drinks my blood has
eternal life, and I will raise them up at
the last day. 55 For my flesh is real
food and my blood is real drink.

56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks

my blood remains in me, and I in them.
57 Just as the living Father sent me and
I live because of the Father, so the one
who feeds on me will live because of
me.

Leviticus 17:11 For the life of a creature

is in the blood, and I have given it to
you to make atonement for yourselves
on the altar; it is the blood that makes
atonement for ones life
1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as
he is in the light, we have fellowship
with one another, and the blood of
Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all[a]
sin.

1 Peter 1:1820 For you know that it

was not with perishable things such as
silver or gold that you were redeemed
from the empty way of life handed
down to you from your ancestors, 19
but with the precious blood of Christ, a
lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He
was chosen before the creation of the
world, but was revealed in these last
times for your sake.

Hebrews 9:1128
11 But when Christ came as high priest of the good things
that are now already here,[a] he went through the greater
and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human
hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12 He
did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves;
but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own
blood, thus obtaining[b] eternal redemption.

13 The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer

sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify
them so that they are outwardly clean. 14 How much more,
then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal
Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our
consciences from acts that lead to death,[c] so that we may
serve the living God!

15 For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new

covenant, that those who are called may receive the
promised eternal inheritancenow that he has died as a
ransom to set them free from the sins committed under
the first covenant.
16 In the case of a will,[d] it is necessary to prove the death
of the one who made it, 17 because a will is in force only
when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the
one who made it is living. 18 This is why even the first
covenant was not put into effect without blood.

19 When Moses had proclaimed every command of the law

to all the people, he took the blood of calves, together with
water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled
the scroll and all the people. 20 He said, This is the blood
of the covenant, which God has commanded you to
keep.[e] 21 In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood
both the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies.
22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be
cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood
there is no forgiveness.

23 It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly

things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly
things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For
Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands
that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven
itself, now to appear for us in Gods presence. 25 Nor did
he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way
the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with
blood that is not his own. ificed once to take away the sins
of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin,
but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

26 Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times

since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once
for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by
the sacrifice of himself. 27 Just as people are destined to
die once, and after that to face judgment, 28 so Christ was
sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will
appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring
salvation to those who are waiting for him.

Redemption often involves the paying of
a ransom, a price that makes

For example,
- The Israelites were redeemed from
Egypt.
- We were redeemed from the power of
sin and the curse of the Law (Gal. 3:13)
through Jesus (Rom. 3:24; Col. 1:14).
- We were bought with a price (1 Cor.
6:20; 7:23).
- Christs death on the cross was the
payment of a ransom price (Mark
10:45) by which sinners are set free.

(ii) Through the blood of Jesus

all our sins are forgiven, if we
confess them. As we walk in the
light with Jesus, His blood is
continually cleansing us from
all sins

1 John 1:79
But if we walk in the light, as he is in
the light, we have fellowship with one
another, and the blood of Jesus, his
Son, purifies us from all[a] sin.
8 If we claim to be without sin, we
deceive ourselves and the truth is not in
us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is
faithful and just and will forgive us our
sins and purify us from all
unrighteousness.

(iii) Through the blood of

Jesus we are justified, made
righteous, just as if we had
never sinned. We are
clothed with His
righteousness

Romans 5:9
9 Since we have now been justified by
his blood, how much more shall we be
saved from Gods wrath through him!
The person who trusts in Christ
becomes, in Christ, all that God
requires that person to be, all that they
could never be in themselves

2 Corinthians 5:21
God made him who had no sin to be
sin[a] for us, so that in him we might
become the righteousness of God.

So what does it mean to be justified?

Justification is an
instantaneous legal act of
God in which he thinks of our
sins as forgiven and Christs
righteousness as belonging to
us, and so declares us to be
righteous in His sight.
Wayne Grudem, Systematic
Theology, Ch 36

(iv) Through the blood of

Jesus we have access into
the presence of God at any
time to obtain mercy and
help, especially in time of
need

Hebrews 10:1920
Therefore, brothers and sisters, since
we have confidence to enter the Most
Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by
a new and living way opened for us
through the curtain, that is, his body,

David Wilkinson:
There is another benefit of the crossGods
delight comes in his enjoyment of our
company.
Before the cross, there was no access to God
for the general public; only the high priest
could enter the Holy of holies. Now Jesus
cross made a path for us into the Fathers
presence. By his grace alone, God tore down
the wall that blocked us from his presence.
Now he could come out to man, to embrace
his prodigals and sinners of all sorts.

you cannot come into joy and peace

indeed, you cannot know how to serve
the Lord until you see his delight in
your deliveranceuntil you see the joy
of his heart over his communion with
youuntil you see that every wall has
been removed at the crossuntil you
know that everything of your past has
been judged and wiped away. God says,
I want you to move on, into the
fullness that awaits you in my
presence!

And now we also have liberty to enter

through the Blood. Sin took away our
liberty of approach to God, the Blood
perfectly restores to us this liberty. He
who will take time to meditate upon the
power of that Blood, appropriating it
believingly for himself, will obtain a
wonderful view of the liberty and
directness with which we can now have
intercourse with God.
Andrew Murray, The Power of the Blood of Jesus

(v) Through the blood of

Jesus we are sanctified
made holy and set apart for
God

Hebrews 13:12
And so Jesus also suffered outside the
city gate to make the people holy
through his own blood.

(vi) Through the blood of Jesus

our conscience is cleansed from
all guilt and we are free in body,
mind, soul and spirit to serve
the Lord Jesus Christ

Hebrews 9:14
How much more, then, will the blood of
Christ, who through the eternal Spirit
offered himself unblemished to God,
cleanse our consciences from acts that
lead to death,[a] so that we may serve
the living God!
2 Timothy 1:7
For the Spirit God gave us does not make
us timid, but gives us power, love and
self-discipline.

Guilt has two distinct parts: legal and

emotional.
- Legal guilt is the outcome of a legal
or a moral violation. If a break the law
or a moral code, I am guilty of
breaking it.

(vii) Therefore we have

victory over the devil and
we overcome him by the
blood of the Lamb and the
word of our testimony and
we love not our own lives
even unto death

Revelation 12:11
They triumphed over him by the blood
of the Lamb and by the word of their
testimony;
they did not love their lives so much as
to shrink from death.

4. Why Blood?

In Old Testament times, the high priest

would enter the Most Holy Place each
year to sprinkle the blood of an animal
sacrifice before the symbol of Gods
presence, the Ark of the Covenant. This
was a temporary way of making
atonement for a nation before God, for
all the sin of the nation during a year.

Leviticus 17:11 helps explain the

significance of the blood. It says, For
the life of a creature is in the blood, and
I have given it to you to make
atonement for yourselves on the altar;
it is the blood that makes atonement
for ones life.
Two points need to be noted here.

which cancels out the offence of sin; so
a life is laid down in payment for sin.

Second, the use of blood in sacrifice
___________________________
is a price-paying act: to make
atonement or reconcile, which simply

means to pay the penalty.

Christ Jesus came as a sinless offering,

shed His own blood and gave His own
life, so that all who believe in Him and
confess Him as Lord would not need to
die for their own sin. He made a way for
our sins to be wiped out. He paid the
price for our sins and obtained eternal
redemption by His death on the cross
(Colossians 1:1314).

God set up the judgement for sin as

death, and then He paid the ransom

world to shed His blood and die for us.
If we accept Jesus as our Lord and
Saviour then we can take hold of this
work and be rescued out of the kingdom
of darkness and become part of the
Kingdom of God.

5. How the Blood of

Jesus Affects our
Daily Lives

(i) ___________________________
In the Garden of Gethsemane Jesus prayed,
Not my will, but yours be done. Luke 22:42
The strain of death was so great upon Him that
blood vessels in His face broke, and, mixed
with perspiration fell to the ground in great
drops. That blood speaks of redemption from
rebellion exercising our wills against the will
of God doing our thing and all its awful
consequences.

From Adam the human race has insisted on

doing its own will and ignoring the will of
God. At times people try to keep His will in
their own power, according to the law, but
they have no power. When Jesus prayed
the High Priestly prayer, Not my will but
yours be done, He prayed in our place, as
a priest does, representing the people
before God. In praying that prayer He shed
His blood to redeem our wills so that we
too can say, Not my will but yours be
done.

6. Questions and
Discussion Points

1. Why did God choose blood as the

price to pay the penalty for sin?
2. Why did Jesus need to go through so
much over a twenty-four hour period
before He finally gave up His life?
Discuss

3. What do you think Jesus was going

through in the Garden of Gethsemane
and why? (Luke 22:39 46).
4. Why has the blood of Jesus opened
up a way for us to have access to God
the Father?

5. Why are we made holy through Jesus

blood? (Hebrews 13:12).
6. In the garden of Eden what did God
use to make amends (atone) for mans
first sin? (Genesis 3:21).
7. Why did Jesus institute the drinking
of His blood symbolically in the Lords
Supper? (John 6:5357; Matthew
26:2729)

7. Summary and
Application

1. The blood of Jesus is sufficient to pay

the price to ransom us from the
consequences of sin and it has paved
the way for us to be in relationship with
God again.

2. The blood of Jesus purifies us from

every sin if we walk in the light with
God and confess our sin.
3. The blood of Jesus only needed to be
shed once because He was the perfect
sacrifice and so acceptable to God once
and for all.

4. The blood of Jesus is effective for our

daily lives and enables us to serve God
fruitfully, with a clear conscience, and
with the peace of God ruling in our
hearts.
5. The blood of Jesus enables us to have
wholeness in body, soul and spirit.
