Niger State:

Niger, the largest State in Nigeria with about 9 percent of Nigeria's total land
area has a population of 4,082,558 Ranked 18th (2006 Census) divided into 25
local Government Areas.

it is bordered by Zarnfara State to the north, Kebbi State to the


northwest , Kogi State to the south, Kwara State to southwest, Kaduna
State and the Federal Capital Territory to the northeast and southeast
respectively.
The State shares a common international boundary with the Republic of
Benin at Babanna in Borgu Local Government area.

Created on 3rd February 1976, the states economy is predominantly


agriculture which is 90 percent of the states gross product.

The capital city is Minna with an estimated population of 304,113 (2007).


This City is the economic nerve centre of the state.

Niger; a name derived from river Niger is blessed with abundant inland fresh
water including rivers Niger, Kaduna, Gurara, Chachanga and Kainji, Shiroro and
Jebba lakes, as well as the Niger flood plain. This resource is excellent for the
development of fish farming, hatcheries, shrimps and eco-tourism.

Niger state has been referred to as power house of the nation (The Power State)
because three hydro-electric power stations namely Kainji (1968), Jebba (1985)
and Shiroro (1990) dams are located in the state. The stations generate a
combined power output of 1,900 megawatts

The state is blessed with abundant tourist attractions including Gurara


Waterfalls, Zuma Rock, Kainji Lake National Park, Bida Arts & Crafts, Shiroro Dam
Tourist Resort and Mayanka Waterfalls.

Agro and Agro Processing:

Currently, there are few scale commercial aquaculture and processing


activity in the state. One of the major large scales fishing company is Gold
Dam Fish Farm and Hatchery. Aquaculture activities are presently carried
out mostly on an individual, small scale basis.

Common livestock species in the state are cattle, goats, sheep, pig, and
poultry. Abu Turab Farms and Maizube Farm are one of the major large
scale livestock farming companies in Niger state. Livestock farming is also
carried out on a small-scale basis
Education:

Niger state has more than 1,160 primary schools, 250 secondary schools
and a number of vocational training centers. There are also about 9
tertiary institutions which include Federal College of Education, Kontagora,
the Federal Polytechnic at Bida and the Federal University of Technology
at Minna. Others include the state owned Technical Teachers Training
Colleges, State College of Education and many others. The state has the
highest concentration of educational institutions in Northwest Nigeria.

Revenue:

The bulk of the States revenue comes from statutory allocations from the
federation account. For instance, between 2000 and 2005, IGR only
constituted an
average of 6.7 % while statutory allocations and value added tax
accounted for 81.7 and 8.1 %, respectively.

Employment:

At the moment, the public sector accounts for 70 % of paid employment


and
about 75 % of government revenue is spent on recurrent expenditures.

Industry:

Most of the industries established in the State in the 1970s and 1980s
have collapsed because of poor public service delivery, the prevailing
harsh economic environment
