GUIDED QUESTIONS
1.

What is the significance of the research article you have chosen to your Related
Learning Experience?
Patient care problems in obstetric nursing include a lack of continuity of care for obstetric
patients, inadequate prenatal instruction and the unpredictability of patient census in the
labor and delivery area. Different complications of pregnancy such as pre-eclampsia,

eclampsia and other maternal and perinatal problems are one of the important causes of
maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. With the increase high-risk pregnancy cases
among the hospitals and other health care institutions, the need for other studies related to
pre-eclampsia and eclampsia were not given importance nor recognition from the field of
research. Thus, the study is significant for the RLE so that the soon-to-be nurses will be
able to keep an up-to-date patient care when dealing with high-risk pregnancy cases.

What are the implications of the findings to your patient care?
Chronic hypotension was associated with pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. Maternal near-miss
cases are eight times more frequent in women with pre-eclampsia, increasing up to 60
times more frequent if eclampsia occurs. Since the study was focused on the estimation of
the global distribution of the incidence of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, associative
factors and the maternal and perinatal outcomes of women were reported.
What intervention/innovation was used or implemented in the reviewed study?
A cross-sectional study was implemented by the researchers at health facilities in 29
countries from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Inferring to the study itself,
considering that the health facilities are the primary sampling unit of this study, I assume
that the researchers analyzed the number of pre-eclampsia, eclampsia and other high-risk

pregnancy cases to be able to report/describe the incidence, other associated factors and
the maternal outcomes with or without these conditions.
4.
Would this practice change/improve process of patient care? How about the patient
outcomes?
Clearly speaking, this cross-sectional study is significant for the nurses and other health
professionals to improve their patient care. With the inclusion of different factors associated
with pre-eclampsia and the patient outcomes for primigravida mothers, it will lessen the
chances of pre-eclampsia to hypertensive mothers.
5.
Identify a nursing theory related to the article findings and discuss/describe how
these findings
patient outcomes for primigravida mothers, it will lessen the chances of pre-eclampsia to
hypertensive mothers.
5. Identify a nursing theory related to the article findings and discuss/describe how these
findings
support/contradict your identified nursing theory.
The Systems Theory by Imogene King is used in this study. It defines health as dynamic life
experiences of a human being, which implies continuous adjustment to stressors in the
internal and external environment through optimum use of ones resources to achieve
maximum potential for daily living (King, 1981, p.5). This nursing theory supports the study
because the study is more focused on the incidence of pre-eclampsia, eclampsia and other
high-risk pregnancy cases and how the future mothers are able to prevent the underlying
symptoms. An awareness of this data presumably educates the people and the researchers,

as well to see through the environmental factors that could lead to complications in
pregnancy.
