Calibration Methods

6.1

Method used sets up the zero point of the probe and the velocity of ultrasound in the target
material

6.2

Any one of the methods described below may be adopted for calibration of digital ultrasonic thickness
gauging meters

6.3

Method A - Calibration method for thickness measurement on steel

6.3.1 Apply couplant to the calibration block mounted on the machine front panel for Probe
recognition ( Automatic zero adjustment) and hold the probe firmly on the surface of the
block switch the machine on
6.3.2 Wait for reading to stabilize then press the probe key
6.3.3 After 2-3 seconds LCD displays thickness of the mounted block in mm
6.3.4 Verify measurement accuracy on calibrated step wedge for 3 to 5 step / thickness
6.3.5 Record the result in format
6.3.6 Acceptance criteria 1 % of reading
6.3.7 Declare & put the status of the Instrument as acceptable or not acceptable

Method B - Calibration method for thickness measurement on material other

than steel but of known sound velocity

6.4

6.4.1 Perform calibration for steel as per method A

6.4.2 Press CAL switch. LCD will display 5920 m/sec, the velocity of sound in steel
6.4.3 Using cursor UP or DOWN keys enter known velocity of sound. Coupling of probe to
calibration block is not necessary
6.4.4 Verify measurement accuracy on calibrated step wedge for 3 to 5 step / thickness
6.4.5 Record the result in format
6.4.6 Acceptance criteria 1 % of reading
6.4.7 Declare & put the status of the Instrument as acceptable or not acceptable

6.5

Method C - Calibration method for thickness measurement on material other

than steel of unknown sound velocity but known thickness

6.5.1 Perform calibration for steel as per method A

6.5.2 Apply couplant to the material of known thickness but of unknown velocity

Standard Operating Procedure
6.5.3 A stable reading will be dispalyed on LCD. Now uncouple the probe
6.5.4 Press CAL switch. Enter known thickness value of the material using cursor UP or
DOWN keys
6.5.5 Now couple the probe using couplant to material of unknown velocity. Actual thickness of
material shall be displayed
6.5.6 Verify measurement accuracy on calibrated step wedge for 3 to 5 step / thickness
6.5.7 Record the result in format
6.5.8 Acceptance criteria 1 % of reading
6.5.9 Declare & put the status of the Instrument as acceptable or not acceptable

7

Responsibility and Authority for Calibration

7.1

Technician qualified as ASNT UT Level II are designated persons to perform calibrations as

per this procedure and prepare calibration reports in standard format as attached

7.2

Calibration reports shall be reviewed by another UT Level II

7.3

The Site In Charge/Record In Charge maintains calibration certificates

Factors influencing measuring values

8.1

The composition of material under examination and of calibration block may influence the
accuracy of thickness measurement by UTM. Effects due to temperature are also known to
influence measurements

8.2

Operating limits of UTM meter are attributed to temperature, battery life, type of probe, wear
and tear of probe surface. Influence of these may effect resolution and accuracy of
measurements
Drift in reading of thickness are also due to rough or pitted surface, unstable position or poor
coupling , damaged probe or cables

Standard Operating Procedure
9

Control of Calibration

9.1

The UTM meter calibrated by this method described above and showing deviations in measured and actual
values within 1% are certified for use with a green tag giving calibration status

9.2

The UTM meter showing deviation from actual thickness by more than
calibrated

9.3

All UTM instruments not meeting the calibration requirements shall be removed from
operation and tagged as NOT OK / NOT IN USE & stored separately

9.4

Manufacturers sealing of integrity to safe guard setting of the instruments internal adjustable
potentiometers, whose setting affects the performance shall not be tampered during the
calibration

10

Frequency of Calibration

10.1

Frequency of calibration of UTM meter as specified by the specification shall be once in a

year or whenever repair / servicing is carried out

10.2

In the event of documented demonstration of consistent / unstable measurement during

calibration the frequency of calibration may be reduced or increased by Director

10.3

Verification of calibration may be carried out as frequent as Site In Charge / User finds
needful

11

Reporting

1% shall be rectified and re-

All Ultrasonic calibration conducted in accordance with this procedure are reported on a
standard test report, a copy of which is appended
