Ph.D. Placement Policy


(Placement Season 2016-17)
This Policy document is for the PhD research scholars who are registering for the Placement season 2016-17.

1. Eligibility

Research scholars who are in the Teaching Assistant (TA), Research Assistant (RA), Project Staff (PS) or
Fellowship Categories and Full Time On-Campus Self-financed category are eligible for placements.
QIP, College Teacher (CT), Sponsored, External and self-financed (part time) candidates are NOT
eligible for placements.
Only students not securing a job in the first year of placement registration are eligible for the second
round of registration the year after.

2. Registration Payment Details

The first time registration fees is Rs 1000/-. Research Scholars registering for the first time have to pay
the same as the registration fees.
Research scholars who are already registered but were unable to secure a job or defend their thesis
will be allowed to continue their registration for the next year by filing their nomination in
Continuation of Registration form. The policy of the continuing year will be applied. Students
registering for the second time need to pay Rupees One Thousand Rs 1000/- as the registration fee.

3. Registration Procedure Details

A student has to submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from his/her thesis supervisor and the Head
of the Department/School/Centre/IDP towards registration. The NOC has to explicitly state that the
student is not currently employed and a full time student of the Department/School/Centre/IDP.
Generally, a Ph.D. student is expected to register post his third APS. However, a student who is likely
to submit the thesis before/by the time of the 3rd APS can also register by producing a certificate
stating the same from his/her guide and the Head of the Department/School/Centre/IDP concerned.
Any student, who is retaining the official status as a full time Ph.D. of IIT Bombay and having presented
the fifth APS and is eligible otherwise, has to submit a certificate to this effect and the
recommendation through his/her guide and the Head of the Department/School/Centre/IDP
concerned.
A student who has submitted the thesis can also participate in the placement process only up to the
date of the final viva-voce examination of the thesis. Application in this category should be supported
by a certificate by the concerned supervisor indicating that the student is not employed and duly
endorsed by the Head of the Department/School/Centre/IDP concerned.

4. Registration Payment Details


The job profiles offered by recruiting organizations are divided into various categories based on the gross
compensation package as follows:
C1 13 LPA
11 LPA C2 < 13 LPA
9.25 LPA C3 < 11 LPA
7.5 LPA C4 < 9.25 LPA
6 LPA C5 <7.5 LPA
5LPA C6 < 6 LPA
C7 < 5 LPA
(LPA Lakhs per Annum in INR)
Factors other than compensation package like job profile, past association of recruiting organization etc.
may sometimes be considered to alter the category.

5. Job Offers*

A student securing a job in C1, C2 or C3 category organization will NOT be eligible to sign any new JAF. The
students name will also be removed from all other JAFs of organizations that he/she has applied for and
he/she will be de-registered from the placement process.
A student securing a job in a C4 category organization (with a remuneration of Rs. x LPA) will be allowed to
sign 1 JAF of organization offering remuneration more than Rs. (x + 3) LPA. If the student gets selected in
the higher-category organization, he/she will become ineligible for the job offered by the lower-category
organization.
A student securing a job in a C5 category organization (with a remuneration of Rs. x LPA) will be allowed to
sign 2 extra JAFs only of organization offering remuneration more than Rs. (x + 2.5) LPA. If the student gets
selected in the higher-category organization, he/she will become ineligible for the job offered by the lowercategory organization.
A student securing a job in a C6 category organization (with a remuneration of Rs. x LPA) will be allowed to
sign 3 extra JAFs only of organization offering remuneration more than Rs. (x + 2) LPA. If the student gets
selected in the higher-category organization, he/she will become ineligible for the job offered by the lowercategory organization.
A student securing a job in a C7 category organization (with a remuneration of Rs. x LPA) will be allowed to
sign 5 extra JAFs only of organization offering remuneration more than Rs. (x + 1.5) LPA. If the student gets
selected in the higher-category organization, he/she will become ineligible for the job offered by the
lower-category organization.

* In order to maximize the sum of benefits to all the stakeholders, the Placement Policy for the students has
evolved over the years. To realize a win-win situation for IIT Bombay and our partner organizations, all students
are expected to understand the Placement Policy and follow it strictly. It may be noted that some policy changes
may take place during the year in the best interest of the whole batch.

Note:
Any Research Scholar who gets 2 jobs during Campus Placement will NOT be eligible to sign any more JAFs,
and the student will be deregistered from further placement process including removal from further
signed JAFs. The student must accept the higher category job, and both the organizations will be informed
accordingly.
Any Research Scholar appearing in multiple shortlists in a single interview slot will have to submit his/her
priority list amongst the organizations that have shortlisted him/her before any short-listing procedure
like test, GD, interview etc. scheduled for the slot. The instructions for providing the option and its deadline
will be communicated by Placement Office. On receiving multiple offers, the Research Scholar has to
accept the offer from the organization appearing earlier in his/her priority list.
Research Scholars are required to abide by placement office norms in context to off- campus process.
There is no time restriction for Ph.D. students approaching Off-Campus provided the prescribed Ph.D. OffCampus application form is properly filled and submitted to the office before initiating the process. NonCompliance to the procedure may lead to disciplinary action from the Placement Office.
Any Research Scholar who secures an off-campus job is required to report the same to the Placement
Office within ONE Working day.
All research scholars are required to abide by placement office norms regarding Graded Penalty
Structure.
The research scholar is bound by the rest of the Institute Placement Policy 2016-17. Refer the annexure for
the Institute Placement Policy 2016-17.
