CHINA APPROVES GUIDELINES TO ENHANCE FOREST PROTECTION - The State

Council, China's cabinet, approved guidelines Wednesday that protect, restore and
ensure the sustainable use of forests for the 2010-2020 period. Participants at the
State Council meeting, chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao, reviewed and approved the
guidelines for forest protection and utilization for the 10-year period. The guidelines say
China will lift its forest coverage to 223 million hectares by the end of 2020, or 23

. INDONESIA AND CONFUSION OVER FORESTRY LICENSES AND US$1B

CONSERVATION DEAL WITH NORWAY. Norway's billion dollar contribution to forest
and peatlands conservation in Indonesia will not fund reforestation of deforested areas,
a government minister told The Jakarta Post. Agus Purnomo, head of the secretariat of
Indonesia's National Climate Change Council, said that Norway has only agreed to
support reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD)
programs, which promote conservation and sustainable forest management, rather than
REDD+ programs, which include reforestation.

EU LAUNCHES FORESTRY SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT TOOL - EU

researchers have developed a tool to help governments and industry make sustainable
development the number one goal of the EU forestry sector. ToSIA (Tool for
sustainability impact assessment) allows policymakers to consider in equal measure the
economic, social and environmental elements of sustainable development. EU support
came from the EFORWOOD ('Tools for sustainability impact assessment of the forestry-
wood chain') project, one of the biggest ever European forestry research studies, with a
budget of EUR 20 million including a contribution of nearly EUR 13 million from the
'Sustainable development, global change and ecosystems' Thematic area of the EU's
Sixth Framework Programme (FP6).

SCIENTISTS AND STAKEHOLDERS GATHERED FOR JOENSUU FORESTRY

NETWORKING WEEK 2010 - Globally, water and its quality and availability are of
highest importance. Forests play an important role in this, as they protect the quality of
water reserves, and regulate the water flow, preventing other areas from flooding.
However, forests also use water and change its quality by intercepting rainfall, and by
taking it up from the soil, and bringing it into the air. This was the topic of the Joensuu
Forestry Networking week organised for the second time in Joensuu, Finland recently.
The event gathered scientists, professionals and stakeholders in forestry from various
regions in Europe to discuss the issues regarding forests and water in Europe.

HELP!

FEEDBACK

. THANKS FOR MANGROVE INFO (via ESRI Forestry Group at LinkedIn) Re FIU Vol
11 No 5 links re mangroves: Elaine George writes: Thank you for posting the link for
the mangroves. For those like myself who are not familiar with mangroves I found the
following link:
http://www.floridaplants.com/horticulture/mangrove.htm
which provides basic information about mangroves. Since mangroves filter water is it
likely that they can handle the extreme phytologic stress from the oil which is washing
into the coastal habitats in Louisiana and other areas? Is the mangrove a tree which is
easily grown, so that some of the damage from the BP oil rig disaster can be
remediated by replanting?

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE Pay it forward! If you can help with any of the requests
below, please take the time to do so. Your kind assistance will be appreciated and
rewarded.

CARBON SEQUESTRATION ACTIVITIES AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL - Gyde Lund

writes: I am looking for any publications on what various countries are doing in regard
to carbon sequestration activities involving forests. What are the various techniques or
methods that countries are using to mitigate the effects caused by CO_2. Any URL or
publication which lists or summarizes such activities by country would be especially
useful. Thank you in advance for your kind assistance. Cheers, Gyde.
