The Visayas State University in cooperation with the Johann Heinrich von Thnen
Institute-Institute of International Forestry and Forestry Economics is currently
implementing the Landscape Forestry in the Tropics (LaForeT) Project. This is a fouryear project funded by the Johann Heinrich von Thnen Institute and the Ministry of
Food and Agriculture of the Republic of Germany. The main aim of the project is
highlighting the impact of policy instruments on deforestation and reforestation
processes and land-use dynamics and sustainability in a landscape context.
The project is composed of six (6) Working Packages that have specific goals and
contributions towards attaining the main goal of the project. Amongst the 6 Working
Packages (WPs) is the Working Package 2 on Sustainable forestry and agroforestry
land-use. The WP2 aims to assess the impact of land-use on forest area and forest
structure by conducting forest inventory activities and investigating the carbon storage
capacity, biodiversity and increment of commercial timber species. Within this WP2,
the Visayas State University as the official partner of the projectseeks to employ four
(4) Forest Inventory Field Assistant that will provide the following duties and
responsibilities.
Academic Qualification
B.Sc. graduate (licensed forester, preferred) of Forestry and/or Environmental Sciences
or B.Sc. Forestry/Environmental Science student at their last year in university.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. As the Forest Inventory Field Assistant, he/she will serve as the technical assistant to the Forest
Inventory Coordinator and PhD student in conducting the forest inventory activities.
2. The Forest Inventory Field Assistant will work closely with the Forest Inventory Coordinator and
PhD student and also provide logistical support in terms of ensuring that day to day activities for
the forest inventory are in place.
3. The Forest Inventory Field Assistant will also provide assistance to the Forest Inventory
Coordinator and PhD student in ensuring that specimens are properly documented, forest data
encoded and transmitted to the LaForeT Philippines team and other Hamburg-based project
members.
Professional Experience
Has previous experience of conducting forest inventory activities (either for carbon accounting
or ecological studies)
Has previous experience on collecting data for forest or ecological transects, knowledge on tree
identification is an advantage.
Language Requirements
Additional Requirements
Must be willing to work and endure fieldwork conditions (e.g. harsh weather conditions.
mountainous terrain)
Must be physically available to perform duties for the entire duration of the forest inventory
activity
