EVALUATION 2: How effective is the combination of your main product and

ancillary texts?
Verisimilitude runs throughout our music video from the styling and make up which
complement my ancillary texts through the use of condensation and Lily. They both evoke
sadness expressed by Lily and the connotation of water representing emotion in all three
products. The motif of water was effective in combining my ancillary product with my video
as it was an easy way to present the lyrics of the song. The photography I used for my
ancillary texts was inspired by the music video and taken whilst filming creating an effective
combination that mediates the lyrics of the song and clearly links the three products
together. As well as this, the colour scheme used in my video mediates the colours I used in
my digipak creating continuity throughout my products. Dressing Lily in a white shirt created
an effective appearance as the verisimilitude of the location complemented her costume
whist mediating gender stereotypes of white creating the connotation of purity for a
woman. This was reflected in my digipak and magazine advert as well to create an effective
combination that continued through all three of my media products.
Every shot in our music video had the verisimilitude considered. The video was carefully
framed to ensure every shot mediated that of an actual music video to guarantee we abided
by conventions that were needed. This was also conveyed in my digipak and magazine
advert though the use of photography as every image was considered and positioned before
placed on my ancillary products. Both the representation and styling of Lily in our video was
mediated across to my ancillary texts. The motif of sadness and anger is expressed in the
photography on my digipak and magazine advert as well as in the music video. These were
combined to provide continuity across all three products. This is a generic convention used
across media products to allow the audience to be aware of the style the band wanted to
present in the digipak as well as creating a brand for Psychedelic. It is an effective
combination of our music video and my ancillary products by suggesting the overall style for
the album songs that could attract the audience to listen to more than Come As You Are
and is advertised through the magazine advert.
The generic conventions used in both ancillary and main products were used across our
work. For example, the record label (Notion Productions) is included in both ancillary texts
as well as representing the music video itself. The logo is used across my ancillary products
to allow my audience to understand who represented Psychedelic as well as being a
requirement that most digipaks must include. As well as this, it is important to promote the
performance and the narrative of our music video as it is such a huge part to the success so
Lilys performance is mediated through my ancillary texts. This is similar to the works of Sia
who creates a character across her albums as her form of branding. We developed this
convention through our music video and my ancillary texts to create an effective
combination.
