Welcome!
Dear Potential New Member,
We are so excited that you are interested in joining sorority life at Purdue University. Throughout
this process, you will meet some of the most amazing and dynamic women on our campus. They
are giving, smart and kind, and we have no doubt that you are about to make friendships that will
last a lifetime.
In addition to joining a sorority, you will also be joing the Panhellenic sisterhood and greater fraternity/sorority community at Purdue. It is within this community where you will create friendships,
build yourself as a leader, serve the community, and ultimately become the best version of
yourself.
The recruitment process may seem quick and overwhelming, but we are confident that if you trust
the process and take advantage of every opportunity to become part of this sisterhood, you will
find your home by the end of this journey. Use this book to take notes about each sorority you visit.
Write down the names of women with whom you made a strong connection, feelings you got when
you were with members, and values of the organization that matter to you. Have an open mind and
remember that each sorority is unique and that it sometimes takes longer than one or two rounds
to grasp what they have to offer.
We truly believe that joining a sorority was one of the best decisions we ever made and cannot wait
to see you find your place in our sisterhood. We hope you enjoy and trust the formal
recruitment process and welcome to our community!
In Sisterhood,
The Panhellenic Recruitment Team
Frequently Asked
Questions
What is fraternity and sorority life?
Sororities are value-based organizations that provide friendship, academic support,
opportunities for civic engagement, and leadership development for many college students.
Sororities have been a part of Purdues student life for more than a century and our
community continues to grow.
Financial
Information
What kind of financial commitment
does a sorority require?
Chapters collect dues and membership fees from every member. Most
sororities have one-time initiation fees, plus semester or monthly dues.
Dues are spent on philanthropic events, scholarship progamming,
membership recruitment, educational and leadership development,
and parent/alumni programming. Most chapters offer payment plans
to help their members meet their financial obligations.

Values
We, as the Undergraduate Members of womens fraternities, stand for good scholarship,
for guarding of good health, for maintenance of high standards, and for serving, to the best
of our ability, our college community. Cooperation for furthering fraternity life, in harmony
with its best posibilities, is the ideal that shall guide our fraternity activities.
We, as Fraternity Women, stand for service through the development of character inspired
by the close contact and deep friendship of individual fraternity and Panhellenic life. The
opportunity for wide and wise human service, through mutual respect and helpfulness, is
the tenet by which we strive to live.
As you can see, the Panhellenic sororities at Purdue are value-based organizations. The
Panhellenic Creed reflects the values in the missions and mottos of all sororities. The
values these groups promote are intellectual development, leadership, friendship, civic
engagement and cooperation- to name a few.
Academic performance and intellectual development are two of the most important values
that sorority women strive to achieve. Sororities work toward these values by creating
positive relationships with faculty members, facilitating quiet hours in chapter facilities,
hosting programs on managing stress and test-taking, and providing opportunities for
mentorship within members majors.
Developing leadership skills is another important value for sororities. Each sorority wants to
see its members succeed and excel in life. You can gain leadership abilities through holding
an officer position, serving on a committee, or planning an event. There are also numerous
opportunities to engage in local, regional, and national leadership conferences through
chapter sponsorships.
Community service, philanthropic activities and citizenship opportunities are abundant.
Sorority members volunteer for different organizations such as Autism Speaks, Susan G.
Komen Foundation, and local United Way agencies. Members also learn about the importance of philanthropic giving at annual and semi-annual events.
Sorority life can provide you with a positive and diverse social experience. It creates
ever-lasting friendships and offers values beyond your collegiate years.
Helpful Tips
1. Be Yourself.
There are so many rumors that go around about sorority chapters, but
there is no sense in listening to the negative things. Focus on what
YOU are feeling at each chapter and go with your gut!
You will be doing LOTS of walking, so make sure that you have the
proper shoes for it. Carry your impractical-but-super-cute shoes in hand
while you bounce around campus in flip-flops on your way to events.
5. Dont be Tardy.
Some rounds include desserts and finger foods. The food is ALWAYS
excellent and you will not want to miss out! Plus, it will give you some
energy during your strenuous days. So try a bite!
Description of Rounds
Open Houses: August 26- August 27
Open house events are the first of four rounds that you will attend. You will attend this
round with your recruitment groups and your Gamma Chis. The Gamma Chis can help you
learn about the locations of each chapter. The purpose of this round is to acquaint you with
Sorority Life. You will attend an event at all 18 chapters during these first two days!
Maintain an open mind and do not just concentrate on one chapter!
Be yourself! The second round of events offers a better opportunity to get to know the
chapter. On this day, you will gain a better insight into each chapters sisterhood. You will
attend up to thirteen events during this round. Look out for certain qualities that you would
want in a sorority. Sincerity, scholarship, friendliness, leadership, and involvement are all
attributes that may help narrow your choice.
There are up to eight events in this round. You will have the opportunity to connect on a
deeper level with women and engage in more conversation! During this round, you will be
able to recognize that individuality and spirit of each sorority. Ask as many questions as
you wish. The sorority women should be able to help answer questions by sharing personal
stories and feelings about chapter life.
This is the last day of Formal Recruitment! There are up to three events in this round. A
more serious atmosphere will be present during these events and most chapters will have
a ritual ceremony. It is during this round that the sorority women will reveal to you what
brought them to their chapter. A ritual ceremony may be presented that depicts the
traditions on which the sorority was founded. It is a special day for you and the sisters.
The conclusion of Formal Recruitment is Bid Day! You will meet with your Gamma Chis and
they will give you a bid card from the sorority that has been mutually selected. Following
the bid distribution, you will go to your chapters Bid Day celebration! Bid Day is a time for
fun, pictures, entertainment, and making new friends! You will meet and become better
acquainted with the other new members and current sisters. This day marks the beginning
of the development of your new home away from home!

Continuous
Recruitment Information
What is Continuous Recruitment?
Continuous Recruitment is a membership recruitment period that
begins after Formal Recruitment when Potential New Members can
meet womens sorority members on a more casual and less
structured basis. When participating in Continuous Recruitment,
women may go to dinner at the chapter house, watch movies, and
socialize with chapter members. Some Panhellenic sororities hold
continuous recruitment in the fall or the spring. Not all sororities hold
continuous recruitment. If you have any questions concerning
Continuous Recruitment, contact LIZ JOHNSON at
personnel@purduephc.com.
