yourcomputerhasbecomechokedwithjunkfiles.Maybeyouhavehadaseriouscrash.
Whetheryou'reinstallinganoperatingsystemonabrandnewcomputerorperforming
recoveryonacomputerwhichhassufferedafatalerror,it'sbesttostartwithaclean,
freshlyformattedharddrive.

Instructions
1 Backupalluserfilesifyou'replanningtoperformasystemrecovery.Buya
largestackofCDsormultipleflashdrives.Thisisthebestwaytobackupyour
harddrive,especiallyifyou'vegotalargequantityoffileswhichtakeupalotof
spaceonthedrive.Theflashdrivesareparticularlyusefulifyouareunableto
burnfilestodisk.Youcanusetheflashdrivestotransferfilestoanother
computer,andthenburnthemtoCD.Youalsomightwanttotryzipdrives.
Otheralternativesincludeconnectingthecomputertoanothercomputerusinga

thesecondcomputer.Also,anexternalharddriveworksverywellasabackup
drive,asdoesatapedrive.Thisstepisprimarilyforuserfileswhichyouand
othermembersofyourhouseholdcreated.Saveimportantinformationsuchas
programactivationcodes,yourinternetaccessinformationandusernamesand
passwords.
2 GathertogetheralltheinstallationCDswhichcamewithyourcomputerand
withthedevicesyouhaveaddedtoyourcomputer.Thismayincludeyour
printer,modem,router,accesspoint,diskdrives,graphicscard,soundcardand
anyotherdeviceswhichhavetheirownseparateinstallationsoftware.Createa

3 EnsurethatyourcomputerissetuptobootfromtheCDROMdrive.Thisis
doneinthesystemBIOS.MostcomputersaccesstheBIOSbyselectingafunction
keyonbootup.Watchthesplashscreenasyourcomputerboots,andselectthe
functionkeywhichyourscreeninstructstogetintosetup.Inthebootmenuof
theBIOSsetup,selecttheCDROMdriveasthefirstchoiceforbootingthe
computer.
4 PlacethefirstCDfortheoperatingsystemintheCDdrive.Thiswilleitherbe
thefirstCDofasetofrecoveryCDs,orastandaloneversionoftheoperating
systemonCD.
5 Turnthecomputeroff.Waitafull30secondsbeforeturningitbackonagain.
Turnthecomputerbackon,andfollowtheinstructionsonthescreentopartition
andformatyourharddrive.Thiswillerasealldatawhichpreviouslyexistedon
