24-22 - AC MAIN GENERATION

A. Main Generator
The AC main generation consists of four Integrated Drive Generators (IDG).
Each IDG contains in the same housing:
one Constant Speed Drive (CSD),
one generator (driven at constant speed by the CSD).
Each IDG provides 90 KVA nominal power, three phase supply with 115 volts between phase and neutral at
Point of Regulation (POR) and a frequency of 400 Hz.
The four IDG generators are: GEN1, GEN2, GEN3 and GEN4.
Each generator is brushless, spray oil cooled and comprises:
a Permanent Magnetic Generator (PMG),
an exciter,
a rotating rectifier assembly,
the main generator.
B. Generator Power Supply
The IDG1 (4000XU) supplies network 1 through the Generator Line Contactor 1 (GLC1) 9XU1.
The network 1 includes:
the AC BUS 1-1 (1XP1),
the AC ESS BUS (9XP),
the AC SHED ESSENTIAL BUS (4XP).
The IDG2 (4000XU) supplies through GLC2 (9XU2) the network 2 corresponding to the AC BUS 1-2
(1XP-2).
The IDG3 (4000XU) supplies through GLC3 (9XU3) the network 3 corresponding to the AC BUS 2-3
(2XP-3).
The IDG4 (4000XU) supplies through GLC4 (9XU4) the network 4 corresponding to the AC BUS 2-4
(2XP-4).
C. Generator Control and Monitoring
Generators 1, 2, 3 and 4 are respectively controlled from GEN1 (3XU1), GEN2 (3XU2), GEN3 (3XU3) and
GEN4 (3XU4) pushbutton switches. They are monitored by generator control units, respectively GCU1
(1XU1) GCU2 (1XU2), GCU3 (1XU3) and GCU4 (1XU4).
D. Generator Line Contactor
Each GLC is controlled and monitored by the associated generator control unit and ECMU:
GLC1 by the GCU1 and ECMU1,
GLC2 by the GCU2 and ECMU1,
GLC3 by the GCU3 and ECMU2,
GLC4 by the GCU4 and ECMU2.
The GLC allows connection of the generator to the corresponding network.
E. Transfer Circuit
(1)
Circuit description
The Bus Tie Contactors (BTC) and the System Isolation Contactor (SIC) are automatically controlled
by the ECMUs. They enable the supply of the whole AC electrical network or half of it via the transfer
circuit.
When the BUS TIE pushbutton switch (13XU) is released, the BTCs and the SIC are not supplied.

A. Independent Power Source

Each GCU is supplied from two independent power sources:
from the Permanent Magnetic Generator (PMG) of the IDG.
When the aircraft engine runs, the PMG power supplies the GCU. The GCU then generates a
28VDC power supply via an internal Transformer Rectifier Unit (TRU) supply,
with a back-up 28VDC from the aircraft DC network.

24-22 - AC MAIN GENERATION

Each GCU communicates with the GAPCU via an ARINC 1553 bi-directional data bus.
The Ground and Auxiliary Power Control Unit (GAPCU) transmits the GCU fault messages in ISO5
alphabet to the Central Maintenance Computer (CMC(s) via an ARINC 429 data bus.
6. Component Description
A. IDG Generator
The generator is a 3-phase, brushless, spray-oil cooled, rotating rectifier machine. The rotor assembly
contains the exciter rotor, main field rotor, and diode rectifier assembly.
The exciter rotor and main field rotor are mounted on a common shaft.
The permanent magnet generator rotor is mounted on the differential output ring gear. The permanent
magnet generator stator, main stator, exciter field, and generator current transformer assembly are mounted
in the IDG housing.
(1)
PMG
(a)
Description
The PMG consists of:
a rotor which contains a sixteen pole permanent magnet of iron cobalt,
a stator which contains a sixteen poles, 3-phase winding, star connected with no ground
reference.
(b)
Operation
As soon as the generator rotates, the PMG rotor causes an alternating flux in the PMG stator
winding (armature). This alternating flux induces an alternating voltage in the PMG stator winding.
The GCU receives this AC power and rectifies it into DC power. This is used by the GCU for system
control and protection, as well as for generator excitation.
(2)
Exciter
(a)
Description
The exciter consists of:
a stator (exciter field) which contains a 6 pole winding on an iron cobalt magnet,
a rotor (exciter armature) which contains a 6 pole, 3-phase winding star connected.
(b)
Operation
The GCU supplies the exciter field via the voltage regulator. The current resulting from the applied
voltage produces a stationary magnetic field. Rotation of the exciter armature in this field induces an
AC voltage in the winding of the rotor. This AC voltage is applied to the rotating rectifier assembly.
(3)
Rotating rectifier assembly
(a)
Description
The rotating rectifier assembly consists of six individual silicon diodes connected in a 3-phase, full
wave bridge.
(b)
Operation
The 3-phase output of the rotor exciter is rectified into a DC output by the bridge assembly.
This DC voltage is directly applied to the main generator rotor winding.
(4)
Main generator
(a)
Description
The main generator consists of:
a 2 pole rotor,
a stator which contains 3-phase star-connected winding, with neutral connected to the aircraft
structure.

24-22 - AC MAIN GENERATION

NOTE: The three coils are connected through a current transformer to the generator neutral. The
current data for the three phases are provided to the GCU.
(b)

Operation

The DC voltage creates a current which when flowing in the rotor windings produces a rotating
magnetic field.
This rotating magnetic field induces an AC voltage in the stator winding.

GCU functions
The main functions of the GCU are:
regulation of the generator voltage,
regulation of the IDG frequency,
control and protective functions,
No Break Power Transfer (NBPT),
BITE function,
interface with the SDACs and GAPCU.
(a)
Voltage regulation
The voltage regulation is achieved by controlling the current through the exciter field. The voltage is
kept at nominal value (115 VAC) at the Point of Regulation (POR).
The POR is located in the electrical power center (715VU, 717VU and 718VU) at the end of the
generator feeder, upstream of the line contactor.

24-22 - AC MAIN GENERATION

The principle of operation of the voltage regulator is by constant frequency variable pulse width
modulation of the voltage through the exciter field.
The voltage regulation portion of the GCU maintains the nominal IDG generator voltage at the point
of regulation. The regulator senses the average of the three phases at the point of regulation and
compares it against a reference voltage. If a difference exists, the voltage regulator adjusts the
generator exciter field current as needed to keep a constant voltage at the point of regulation.
During overload, overcurrent, and differential current fault conditions, the excitation current to the
IDG generator is automatically controlled to limit current and power from the associated generator to
a safe level.
(b)
Regulation of the generator speed
The regulation of the generator speed is accomplished by means of a servo valve located in the IDG.
The GCU controls the servo valve position.
The operating principle is detailed in Ref. 24-21-00.
(c)
Control and protective functions
The GCU controls the connection and disconnection of the power provided by the generator to and
from the aircraft electrical system. This control is provided by means of 3 relays:
the Generator Control Relay (GCR) which controls the generator excitation,
the Power Ready Relay (PRR) which controls the generator line contactor and the FAULT warning
light in the cockpit,
the Servo Valve Relay (SVR) which controls the generator speed by means of the servo valve.
NOTE: The PR status is transmitted to the ECMU. Through its protection functions the GCU ensures
the required power quality of the aircraft electrical system. These protection functions are initialized in case of IDG, GCU or IDG channel fault.
1

Protective functions
The protective functions are:
over/undervoltage,
over/underfrequency,
underspeed,
overcurrent/overload/current unbalance,
phase sequence and open neutral,
disconnect,
fire switch,
differential protection:

low oil level.
Functional description of the Remote Oil Level Sensor (ROLS)
The GCU includes a monitoring circuit which enables to know the IDG oil level status. Six minutes
after engine shutdown, the GCU initiates an oil level interrogation sequence.
The oil level status check is made continuously every six minutes and as long as the backup 28 VDC
is available to the GCU.
In case of low oil level detection, the GCU generates a LOW OIL LEVEL message to the CMC(s) via
the GAPCU.
In case of high oil level detection, the GCU generates an HIGH OIL LEVEL message to the CMC(s)
via the GAPCU.
An ECAM warning is shown on the upper ECAM to tell the crew.
NOTE: In the event of an "IDG LOW OIL LEVEL" message, an oil level visual check through the IDG
sight glass must be carried out before any servicing:
- After an oil level servicing which might be done GCU powered off due to an faulty oil message, it is necessary to switch off, then on, the relevant GEN pushbutton switch in order to
reset the GCU.

24-22 - AC MAIN GENERATION

A. Generator Control
The GEN pushbutton switches which are located in the overhead ELEC panel (235VU) have two positions.
(1)
OFF position
When the pushbutton switch is released:
the white OFF legend is on,
the generator is shut down (de-energized) and the line contactor is open,
GEN OFF warning is displayed on the Engine/Warning Display (EWD) with the ELEC AC page
displayed on the System Display (SD).
(Ref. Fig. GEN 1 (2, 3, 4) OFF (Class 1 - Level 2) - EWD/SD)
(2)
ON position
When the pushbutton switch is pushed, the generator is put on line as soon as the electrical parameters
(frequency, voltage) are within the normal limits.
If the PMG frequency is above 1260 Hz and no protection function is triggered, the GCR closes (initial
generator frequency = 300 Hz).
160 ms later, if the IDG input speed is above 4900 RPM, the PRR closes. The PRR provides 28 VDC to
the GLC coil and a ground signal to the ECMU. From this ground signal, the ECMU validates the logic
equation of the GLC and generates a ground signal to the GLC, which closes.
The generator supplies its network.
When the IDG input speed decreases:
the GLC opens when the IDG input speed is below 4680 RPM,
the generator is de-energized when the generator frequency decreases to 300 Hz.
B. Generator Overcurrent, Overload or Short circuit
In case of the generator overcurrent/overload or short circuit (between two phases or between one phase
and neutral):
the GCU overcurrent/overload protection is initialized,
10 seconds after the initialization and if the fault is still present, the GCU sends a ground signal to
the ECMU which consequently sheds the galleys according to the automatic shedding principle
(Ref. AMM D/O 24-26-00-00) and (Ref. AMM D/O 24-29-00-00) ,
if the shedding is effective, no warning is triggered,
if the shedding is not effective:
. the amber FAULT legend comes on on the GALLEY pushbutton switch,
. the MASTER CAUT comes on accompanied by the single chime and the amber fault message
(GEN 1 (2, or 3, or 4) or APU GEN overload) is displayed on the EWD:
(Ref. Fig. GEN 1 (2, 3, 4, APU GEN) Overload (Class 1 - Level 2) - EWD/SD)
The crew has to manually shed all the galleys by depressing the GALLEY pushbutton switch which reduces
generator load.
If the manual shedding is not effective, after the protection time delay has elapsed, the BTC is latched open.
If the fault persists, the generator is de-energized and the GLC opens.
C. Protection Function Triggering
If one or more of the protective functions listed in Para 5 are triggered, the GCU opens the GCR and the
PRR, and in some cases, the SVR. (Ref. table in Para.5.).
The PRR breaks the 28 VDC to the GLC and the corresponding ground signal to the relevant ECMU.
Simultaneously the automatic transfer becomes effective.

The respective ECMU energizes the relevant BTC in order to restore the lost busbar.
NOTE: The BTC is locked out for the following protections:
- overcurrent/overload,
- GLC failure,
- IPT.
At the same time:
amber FAULT legend comes on on the GEN pushbutton switch,
MASTER CAUT + single chime + amber message (GEN1, GEN2, GEN3 or GEN4 FAULT) is displayed
on the EWD:
(Ref. Fig. GEN 1 (2, 3, 4) FAULT (Class 1 - Level 2) - EWD/SD)
ELEC AC page is automatically displayed on the SD:
To reset the protection function, the crew must:
release GEN (FAULT/OFF/R) pushbutton switch,
then push it again.
NOTE: The amber FAULT legend of the GEN pushbutton switch also comes on when the GLC is open.
The various indications concerning the four generators on the ELEC AC page are described in Ref.
24-27-00 (AC Generation Monitoring and Indicating).
D. Transfer Circuit Operation
(1)
Operation of the BTC1
The BTC1 closes if there is no interlock condition on the GCU1:
when the GEN1 is not available, in order to supply the network 1 from another power source (GEN2,
GEN4, APU GEN, EXT PWR A or EXT PWR B),
to supply the network 2 from GEN1 if the GEN2, APU GEN, EXT PWR A and EXT PWR B are not
available,
to supply the network 3 and 4 from GEN1 if the GEN3, GEN4, APU GEN, EXT PWR A and EXT PWR
B are not available and GEN2 is available.
(2)
Operation of the BTC4

(3)

The operation of BTC4 is symmetrical to that of the BTC1.

Operation of the BTC2

The BTC2 closes if there is no interlock condition on the GCU2:

when the GEN2 is not available, in order to supply the network 2 from another power source (GEN1,
GEN4, APU GEN, EXT PWR A or EXT PWR B),
to supply the network 1 from the GEN2 if the GEN1, APU GEN, EXT PWR A and EXT PWR B are not
available.
(4)
Operation of the BTC3

(5)

The operation of BTC3 is symmetrical to that of the BTC2.

Operation of the SIC
when the GEN3 (or GEN4) and EXT PWR A are not available and the APU GEN or EXT PWR B are
available, in order to supply the network 3 (or network 4) from the APU GEN or from the EXT PWR B,
if the APU GEN is not available,

when the GEN1, GEN2, APU GEN, EXT PWR A and EXT PWR B are not available and the GEN3,
GEN4 are available, in order to supply the networks 1 and 2 from the GEN4.
(6)
Latching logic of the BTC's from the GCU's
The BTC1 is latched open if a "GLC1 welded" failure or a non-clarified short circuit occurs on GEN1
channel.
The same latching logic is used for BTC2, BTC3 and BTC4.
E. Programmable Logic Circuit
Each GLC, each BTC and the SIC is controlled by its associated ECMU through a control logic function,
depending on the status of the AC main contactors and the GCU's.
For more detailed information refer to Ref. 24-29-00, (ECMS), Para.6.
Each logic function is programmed into a specific logic circuit.
8. BITE Test
A. Description
The GCU BITE performs the following functions:
communication with the CMC(s) through the GAPCU, both to transmit failure information and receive
status information,
detection of any failure affecting the generating channel,
identification of the Line Replaceable Unit (LRU) responsible for the failure,
memorization of the information pertaining to the failure in the Non-Volatile Memory (NVM).
(1)
Communication with the GAPCU

(2)

Ref. 24-41-00 Para.: Communication with up to the four GCUs.

Detection of any failures affecting the generating channel

(3)

(Ref. Para. B.).

Identification of the LRU responsible for the failure

(4)

(Ref. Para. B.).

Memorization of the information pertaining to the failure in Non-Volatile Memory (NVM)

The GCU contains a NVM which is implemented on the EEPROM.

The GCU NVM stores data for faults detected by the GCU BITE.
The GCU NVM is structured as other type 1 computers (Ref. 45-11-00, CMS operational use).
B. Description of the Interactive Mode Function
Ref. 24-41-00 (AC External Power Control), Para.: Description of the interactive mode function.
C. Realization of the BITE/TEST
The GCU has a test initialization and three different types of BITE:
signature evaluation/monitor,
isolation,
maintenance.

24-22 - AC MAIN GENERATION

The isolation BITE has the highest priority followed by the maintenance BITE, and then the signature BITE.
(1)
Initialization
The test initialization is made at power-up or when the generator pushbutton switch is cycled and the
watchdog has timed out or after a maintenance BITE.
(2)
Signature evaluation BITE (SBITE)
Monitoring is executed as long as the GCU is powered except when the maintenance BITE or isolation
BITE has precedence.
The monitor BITE does not change the contents of any RAM used by the control and protection
software. It does not change the state of any of the outputs and does not stimulate any sense circuitry.
No maintenance BITE test results in the monitor/signature BITE fault being written in the NVM.
Once a given fault has been determined an indication of the fault is written into the NVM.
(3)
Fault Isolation BITE (IBITE)
In the event of a protective trip, the fault isolation software determines whether the trip is due to an
external fault trip condition or to a faulty sense circuitry within the controller.
The fault isolation BITE's primary function is to identify the failed LRU after a protective trip has
occurred. The protective trips are classified as any fault detected by the controller that will result in a
Generator Control Relay (GCR) trip or lockout of the BTC relay. After a failure has been detected, the
corresponding isolation routine is executed. The only isolations that can be executed after another
isolation has been completed (without the protection latch being cleared (cold start or GCS cycled)) are
Differential Protection, Disconnect, Fire trips, and unrelated faults. Whenever the "controlled shut down"
flag in the NVM is not true, the Generator Control Switch (GCS) must be cycled to allow the GCR to reclose.
(4)
Maintenance BITE
The maintenance BITE is intended to operate with the relevant generator not running.
The maintenance BITE is executed only upon command from the GAPCU. The GAPCU only requests
the maintenance BITE if requested by the CMC.
For more details, refer to 24-41-00 Para. BITE Test.
