#R</3J
The New Era
The play entitled #R</3J showcased the majority of the youth of todays
generation through the protagonists, namely R and J. It focused mainly on the
youths yearning for freedom and self-expression. This pursuit of freedom has
resulted in the youth venturing into different things that spark their interest. A
few of these curiosity inducing things range from trying drugs to premarital sex.
I agree with how the play demonstrated a unique and modern side of our
generation and the unaddressed problems that our nation possesses.
J embodied the impulsiveness of our generation to maintain a socially
accepted image to be viewed by the public despite the different, or sometimes
even contrasting, persons that we truly are or want to become. In front of the
camera, she was obliged to act differently. She exposed a part of herself that
was fake in order to gain popularity. The citizens of our nation unknowingly
have a soft spot for the people who show compassion and sympathy. In Js case,
she showed to the audience that she was emotionally affected by the criticisms
about her father when in actuality, she did not care about it and even agreed
with what they had to say about him. This displayed not only the youth
manipulating how people view them to be but also the power of media to
provide false information. This is further exemplified through the protagonists
fathers. Mr. Capule is an actor that ventured into the world of politics. He
exposed a compassionate, sympathetic, loyal, God-fearing and kind politician to
the people in order to gain their favor in the election. Mr. Montes fought for his
sons rights, despite murdering a person, to the point of trying to manipulate
the news in order to make his son appear innocent.
The innermost desire of our generation to express ourselves, through
social media or through actions, was represented by R. Most of the scenes
showcased the lascivious redefinition of love for the modern youth. It depicted
how our generation viewed love to be which is something that is profoundly
passionate and full of lustful desire. R met J in a club where their one night
stand developed into something emotionally deeper. This characterized how the
youth search for love. Nowadays, people ranging from teenagers to young

adults visit clubs in order to find a suitable partner to fill the void of loneliness.
Virginity has become something that is easy to give away. Sex has always been
an act of showing utmost love to ones partner and one night stands were
already known years before our generation emerged and continued such act.
R frequented in visiting social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook
in order to update people of his feelings and his stand on the latest news. This
portrays the importance and influence of media to the society. Media has
become a major part of communication for it is a medium in order to transmit
and disseminate messages efficiently. The play focused on the misuse of media
and the negative effect it has on the society. The first few scenes, specifically
between R and his previous girlfriend, showed that the youth uses media as a
form of pornography. Videos of lewd displays has become a way of
communicating ones love or lust to a partner. The media was also used for
spreading information which easily influenced the way society thinks. It was
depicted through the rapid spreading of news about R and Js controversial
relationship and how different parts of society reacted to it. Some of them
deemed the news to be irrelevant while others supported it. It shows how a
single piece of information can be ambiguous; different groups of our
generation can interpret information and react to it in a variety of ways.
The play exposed only a fraction of the youth of todays generation. This
era does not deal with only drugs, lecherous love and violence as portrayed by
the actors and actresses. Indeed, I agree that the aspects of our generation
demonstrated in the play were true but there are other sides that werent the
main focus of the production. These unexemplified traits are the positive sides
that this modern generation possesses. There are people whose valuesto
strive in order to create a change for the betterment of the society and to
correct the wrongare opposing that of the youth depicted in the play.
