Homework 7

Problem 1
Is there a relationship between sex and political party affiliation? The following data was observed on
4419 subjects from a recent General Social Survey.
Democrat
Independent
Republican

Male

a) Which variable would be identified as the explanatory and which as the response? What is the size
of the table?
b) Conduct a chi-square test of independence at a 0.01 significance level. Include the appropriate
hypotheses, by hand construct the table of expected counts (rounded to one decimal) and calculate
the chi-square test statistic, include the p-value, RR, degrees of freedom, decision and conclusion.
c) Which two cells contribute most to the overall chi-square test statistic?
d) What is the relative risk of outcome of Female versus Male for the Democratic Party? Provide an
interpretation of this relative risk.
e) Conduct a test of two proportions for part d) (that is, conduct a two-proportion test for Female
versus Male for the Democratic Party). Include the hypothesis, test statistic, rejection region, p-value,
check appropriate conditions, and provide the decision and conclusion at a 0.01 level of significance.

Problem 2
a) Repeat part b) of problem #1 using Minitab. To perform the test in Minitab, use the following
sequence Stat > Tables > Chi-Square Test for Association If you have summarized observed counts in
the table as in the picture below,

then in the drop down box select 'Summarized data in two-way table' and enter the columns that
contain the observed counts (in the picture the columns are C2, C3, C4). Under 'Statistics', keep checked
the boxes that are already checked, but also check the box for 'Each cell's contribution to the chisquare'. Click OK. And click OK again. The output appears in the session window.

Copy/paste the Minitab output, including each cells row percent and chi-square contribution. Report
the value of the test statistic, degrees of freedom, and the p-value. Provide the decision of the test.
b) Repeat part e) of problem #1 using Minitab. Copy/paste the Minitab output, report the value of the
test statistic, p-value, and the appropriate interval. Provide the decision of the test. (See Lab Activity
#3 for the steps).

Problem 3
Below are heights (inches) and weights (in pounds) of five adult males.

a) By hand, calculate the correlation between these two variables and interpret the value of the
correlation.
b) Have Minitab to compute the correlation using the sequence Stat > Basic Statistics > Correlation..
Double click both columns with the data into 'Variables' and click OK. The output appears in the session
window. Copy/paste the Minitab output in your homework. Note that the p-value there corresponds
to testing H0: = 0 vs Ha: 0. Using the p-value in this output, is there significant evidence that the
true correlation between these two variables is different from 0?
c) Convert the heights to centimeters by multiplying 2.54 to each height. Recalculate the correlation.
Compare it to the correlation in a)
