--Explain the Mohrs circle of construction for two perpendicular direct stresses
with state of simple shear.
At a point in a bracket the stresses in two mutually perpendicular planes are
400 MN/m2 tensile and 300 MN/m2 tensile. The shear stress across these planes is
200 MN/m2, Determine the magnitude and directions of principal stresses and
maximum shear stress.
[20]
State and explain Maximum principal stress theory and derive the equation for the
estimation of maximum principal stress.
A steel shaft is subjected to an end thrust producing a stress of 90 MPa and the
minimum shearing stress on the surface arising from torsion is 60 MPa. The yield
point of the material in simple tension was found to be 300 MPa. Calculate the
factor of safety of the shaft according to:
i) Maximum shear stress theory
ii) Maximum distortion energy theory.

Derive Lames equations for thick cylinders from the first principles.
To measure the longitudinal and circumferential strains, strain gauges were fixed
on the outer surface of a closed thick cylinder of diameter ratio 2.5. At an internal
pressure of 276 MN/m2 these strains were recorded as 11.016 10-5 and
11.28 10-5 respectively. Determine:
i) Youngs Modulus and
ii) Modulus of rigidity.

A rectangular steel shaft is transmitting power at 300 rpm, lifting a load of 40 kN

at a speed of 10 m/min. If the maximum permissible shear stress in the shaft is
45 MN/m2 and efficiency of the crane gearing is 60 %, determine:
i) Size of the shaft
ii) Angle of twist per meter length.
Derive the equivalent stiffness if two springs are in series.

Calculate the maximum value of the slenderness ratio of a mild steel column for
which Eulers formula is valid. Take c = 330 MN/m2 and E = 210 GN/m2.
Derive the Perrys formula to determine the safe load that can be applied on a
column.

A 40 mm x 40 mm x 5 mm angle is used as a simply supported beam over a span
of 2.4 m. It carries a load of 200 N along the vertical axis passing through the
centroid of the section. Determine the resulting bending stresses on the outer
corners of the section, along the middle section of the beam.
