HW#4

(Ch.4 & Ch.5, Due: 12/03, )

1. The upper and lower conducting plates of a large parallel-plate capacitor are
separated by a distance d and maintained at potential V0 and 0, respectively. A
dielectric slab of dielectric constant 6.0 and uniform thickness 0.8d is placed over the
lower plate. Assuming negligible fringing effect, determine
a) the potential and electric field distribution in the dielectric slab; (5%)
b) the potential and electric field distribution in the air space between the dielectric
slab and the upper plate; (5%) and
c) the surface charge densities on the upper and lower plates. (5%)
2. Consider a very long coaxial cable which cross section
view is shown in Fig.1. The inner conductor has a radius
a and is maintained at a potential V0. The outer conductor
has an inner radius b and is grounded.
(a) Determine the potential distribution in the space
between the conductors. (5%)
(b) What about the potential distribution outside the
coaxial cable? (5%) [think the reason why.]

grounded, parallel conducting planes as shown in Fig.2. (10%)

6. As shown in Fig. 5, a point charge +Q is at a distance d from the center of a

grounded conducting sphere of radius a (a < d). Determine
(a) the charge distribution induced on the surface of the sphere. (5%)
(b) the total charge induced on the sphere. (5%)
7. A DC voltage Vo is applied across a cylindrical capacitor of length L. The radii of
the inner and the outer conductors are a and b, respectively (take a reference to Fig.1).
The space between the conductors is filled with two different lossy dielectrics having
(1,1) in the region a<r<c, and (2,2) in the region c<r<b, respectively.
a) Find the current density in each region. (5%)
b) Find the surface charge densities on the inner and outer conductors and at the
interface between the two dielectrics. (5%)
8. A conducting material of uniform thickness
h and conductivity has the shape of a quarter
of a flat circular washer, with inner radius a
and outer radius b, as shown in Fig.6.
a) Determine the resistance between the end
