Grade: 11 Topic: Factoring DOTS

Mathematics

Content Area:

Instructional Objective
After reviewing the concept of finding the GCF, students will explore further
techniques for factoring polynomial expressions through factoring the difference of
two perfect squares (DOTS).

Standards and Indicators from New York State Common

Core Learning Standards
A-SSE.2 - Use the structure of an expression to identify ways to rewrite it. For
example, see x4 y4 as (x2)2 (y2)2, thus recognizing it as a difference of squares
that can be factored as (x2 y2)(x2 + y2).
Indicator This will be evident when students work in groups on solving problems.

Motivation
Teacher will begin the day with a review of GCF through the website:
https://www.ixl.com/math/algebra-2/factor-out-a-monomial. Students will be asked
to solve the first 5 problems to test their prior knowledge while the teacher walks
around the room.

Adaptations
The students who are struggling with the material will have a chance to work
within a group with students who have a better understanding of the material.
Those students will be encouraged to help develop understanding within the
whole group. The students who have completed their worksheet with the correct
answers will be encouraged to work on harder problems on the worksheet. All
students will be given an opportunity to work on a set of problems together
and/or alone.

Differentiation of Instruction
Teacher understands that all students work at different levels and may have
some gaps in understanding. Therefore, in this lesson, students are given the
opportunity to work at their own pace while working in groups. If they have
questions, the teacher will be walking around to answer any and all questions.

Developmental Procedures
-

Teacher will begin class by encouraging students to take out their

chromebooks and access the website given to work on 5 GCF problems. (5
minutes)
The teacher will stress the importance of GCF as the first step to factoring,
and then begin working on teaching students the method of DOTS, first
giving them the form for factoring the difference of two perfect squares,

b 2 a b a b
x 9

. Students will then be shown an example by the

teacher (
-

). (5 minutes)

x 2 25

The teacher will then put another problem on the board (

) and have
students work on the answer with the teacher. (5 minutes)
Students will then be instructed to take out their factoring worksheet and
work on problems 1-5 in their groups, while the teacher walks around
assessing for understanding and answering questions. (15 minutes)
After students have completed the five problems, the teacher will return to
the front of the room and go over any problems students seemed to struggle
with, and discuss common mistakes that occurred (5-7 minutes).
Students will then be given an exit ticket of one problem and asked to solve
and hand in before class ends (5 minutes).

Assessment
Students will complete the classwork with 80 percent accuracy.

Independent Practice
Students will be encouraged to work on more problems (6-10) if they finish early.

Follow-up: Academic Intervention and Academic

Enrichment
Academic Intervention: Extra help will be given to all students who need further
clarification on one or more problems. By working with small groups (or one on one
if necessary), the teacher will provide direct instruction and provide further
understanding of the material.
Academic Enrichment: Questions 6-10 are a bit more challenging and students who
complete questions 1-5 with 100% accuracy will be encouraged to work on the
other 5 problems.
