Assignment 7: Gamifying 9th Grade Literature and Composition
1. Goals:
The major goal for implementing Classcraft in my 9th Grade Literature and Composition
classroom is to increase motivation, participation, and collaboration in the classroom.
2. Players/Students:
Classcraft will be implemented in my fourth block 9th Grade Literature and Composition
classroom. This classroom is comprised of 30 general learners who, from observation,
need extra motivation to succeed in the classrooms. Out of the 30 students, 9 are girls
and 21 are boys. I have one student who is an English Learner and one other student who
has the learning disability, ADD which allows for this student to receive the
accommodation of extended time. Out of the 30 students, no students have a previous
experience with using Classcraft.
3. Learning Objectives/Target Behaviors:

While reading William Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet during our Paradox unit, students
will practice their reading comprehension skills by answering questions, participating in
meaningful discussion, completing and passing quizzes, and getting questions correct in
review games.
During this time, students will complete multiple standards including:
ELAGSE9-10RL1: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what
the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
ELAGSE9-10SL1: Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative
discussions(one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 910
topics, texts, and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly and
persuasively.

Using smaller assessments, target behaviors will be based on formative assessments, and
evaluating student performance:
1.

Students will participate in reading as a class and class discussions.

2. Students will take quizzes based on reading and higher order thinking
pertaining to the play.
3. Students will participate in review games on Romeo and Juliet while in their
separate teams on Classcraft.
4. Game Elements:
Students will begin the game by choosing their character and joining their groups or
families that will be pre-determined by the teacher. The families will be based on
Romeo and Juliets opposing families: the Capulets and the Montagues. Although these
families will already be predetermined; however, students will still be able to name
their character and choose which character they would like based on their interests or
their characters abilities. Students can choose between the Warriors, Mages, and Healers
all which possess a separate ability. Once they choose their avatar, they can then begin to
customize their character. Having students create and customize their character allows
students to feel responsible for their character as they take ownership in answering
questions, participating, and succeeding on quizzes and the final test.

Capulets:

Students will compete against their opposing families by answering questions,


participating in discussion, completing assignments, good behavior, and succeeding on
the quizzes and final test. While using Classcraft in class, students will be able to have

battles by answering review questions. Students will also be able to be rewarded with a
right answer or good behavior or have points taken away from them.

5. Process:

Day 1:

After the instructor has set the game up, the


teacher will introduce the concept to the students
by explaining the rules and playing the tutorial
that is provided by ClassCraft.

Students will spend the day exploring the site,


joining their families, and customizing their
avatar. Students will also participate in their first
discussion while reading.
Days Before the Test

Students will read on a daily basis all while


participating in an instructor-led discussion.

Students will use the instructors review games to


answer questions while checking reading
comprehension and higher order thinking skills.

Students will perform well on all formative


assessments on Romeo and Juliet including
quizzes that will be given at the end of every Act.

Students will follow all school rules, respect their


peers, be on time to class, and have their materials
every day.

*Failure to meet any of these requirements will


result in loss of points in Classcraft, ultimately
taking points away from their family.
Day of the Test

Students will perform well on their test, receiving

at least a passing grade over the unit test which


covers everything that has been discussed in the
unit.

6. Assessment:
Classcraft makes assessing very easy for the instructor. The instructor becomes the score
recorder, and Class craft become the score keepers, making it easy for the instructor to
translate their grades into the grade book.

Not only will students receive a grade for their formative and summative assessments,
which will be in the grade book under the post-test category (worth 40% of their final
grade), but whichever family has the most points in Classcraft on the day of the Final test
will receive 10 extra points on their Romeo and Juliet test which will be entered in the
Post-Post Test Grade (worth another 40% of their final grade).

7. Classroom Management:
Classcraft clearly lays out the expectations and requirements of the students, and failure
to follow these rules will result in deduction from his/her grade. When students join the
class, they will receive the rules and expectation of the game and what they are supposed
to follow. Parents are also available to join and see their childs progress and
expectations.
