Numerical Puzzle
Question.1

(Difficulty Level: Tough)

Ankit has 64 small cubes with him. He makes one large cube by assembling all small cubes
into one. He names each face of the large cube with an alphabet from AF and write a
number from 1 to 96 on each visible face of the smaller cube. No number is repeated and
numbers are written in such a way that the sum of number on face A is less than that of face
B and so on. Also no two consecutive integers appear on a same face.
So what can be the lowest sum of the numbers on the face D?
Option:A.
B.
C.
D.

523
544
480
502

Solution
Alt 1:
Face A < Face B < Face C < Face D
Since there are 4 faces under consideration, consider the numbers to be in
groups of 4 .To make the inequality possible and to ensure the least total for face D,
assign the first four natural numbers to faces A, B, C and D respectively.
Now, if the same process is followed i.e. the number 5 is assigned to face A, the number on
face D will be 8 i.e. the largest of this group of 4. However, this will not help minimise the
sum. To reduce the gap, we will assign numbers from 1 to 36 in the forward order. Thereafter
we will start assigning number from 37 to 64 in the reverse order to minimize the gap.
Thus, the numbers on the first four faces can be shown as follows:
Face A 1 5
9
13 17 21 25 29 33 40 44
Face B 2 6
10 14 18 22 26 30 34 39 43
Face C 3 7
11 15 19 23 27 31 35 38 42
Face D 4 8
12 16 20 24 28 32 36 37 41
Total Sum Face A= 517, Face B= 519, Face C= 521, Face D= 523

Thus, the least possible total for the face D is 523.

Alt 2: On each face there will be 16 numbers. In first 4 faces there will be total 64 numbers.
The sum of all those 64 numbers will be n(n+1)/2 = 2080

Let the sum of 16 numbers on Face A= x then

Face B = x+1, Face C= x+2, Face D = x+3
Equation: x+x+2+x+4+x+6= 2080
x = 517
Therefore lowest sum on Face D= 523

Rohit went for Job in a company. At the end of the interview, HR asked him to confirm his
appointment by giving a call next week. Rohit noted down the number on his palm. After he
reached home, and checked his palm for number, he saw that only few digits were visible.
However he remembered the following: It was 8 digit number and the first digit was 2. For
next three digits he found that in the area where branch was located all the numbers started
from either 673 or 635. He remembered that the number was odd and digit 7 was appearing
only once in the number.
What is the minimum number of trials he has to make before he can be certain about the
phone number.
Options:A.
B.
C.
D.

1st place is fixed. In 2nd 3rd and 4th place can be filled in 2 ways by 673 or 635. 8th place can be
filled with either of 1,3,5,7,9. As 7 should appear once only, thus if last digit is not 7, then total
number of trials will be 2x10x9x9= 1620 ways and if last digit is 7 then number of trials will be
2x9x9x9= 1458. Total number of trials = 4x1620 + 1458 = 7938 trials

Question 5

(Difficulty Level: Moderate)

In FIFA World cup 16 teams are participating. The matches will be conducted in 2 stages. In
first stage, the teams are divided in 4 groups. Each group consists of 4 teams, with each team
playing every other team in its group exactly once. At the end of first stage, top 2 teams from
each group advance to Second stage. The second stage will have multiple rounds. In a round,
each team play one match. The winner of a match then advances to next round and the loser
is eliminated. The one who keeps on winning every round is ultimately declared winner of the
World cup. There is no possibility of Tie. If there is tie in a match, the winner is decided by
series of complex arrangement. A team gets 1 point for each win and no points for a loss. At
the end, the teams are ranked on the basis of total points earned by them to determine the
qualifiers for next stage.
What is the total number of match played in the World cup tournament?
A.
B.
C.
D.

47
63
35
28

Solution:
In First stage: As there are 4 teams in a group, each team will play 1 match against another.
Total number of matches in a group n(n+1)/2 = 10. As there are 4 groups. Total matches in
first stage = 4 x 10 = 40
In Second Stage: Total 8 teams will advance, there will be 4 matches between 8 teams, then 2
matches for semifinal, then 1 final match to decide the winner. Total number of matches =
4+2+1= 7
Total matches= 40 +7 = 47
