Feel the Rush

of Relaxation
Sit back, relax and recharge with
this issue of Possibilities magazine. Put
the hustle and bustle of everyday life
behind you and dream of where your
travels will take you next.
We must remember to give
ourselves the gift of me time, which
can be different for each of us. From
sitting back in a beach chair with a
cold beverage to hiking the side of
a mountain to soak in a vista youve
only seen in pictures. Our busy lives
create an even greater need to disconnect and find ways to re-energize.
For many, as the days are shorter
and temperatures are cooler, dreams
of the warmth of one of the top 5 sun
(re)set beaches fill our heads.
Or maybe a cruise, floating along
a river or an ocean, is how you
re-energize. From river cruising in
Europe and Asia to fun-in-the-sun

cruises to Bahamas and the islands of

the West Indies, there is a cruise and
a ship for all tastes and styles.
Everyone needs to recharge, and
the winners of the Amazing Race,
Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell,
know this oh so well. The pair behind
the highly successful company
Beekman 1802 and season 21 winners
of the Amazing Race know how vital
re-energizing is to the mind, body and
soul. Thats why they invite people to
experience it with them on their Trip
of a Lifetime to India.
And remember, relaxing and
recharging doesnt just start when you
arrive at your destination. It can start
at the trip planning stage when you
work with one of our travel advisors.

magic happen and replace stress with
joy when travel planning.

ast week I reached my breaking

point. Its that time of year
between fall and winter when I
need to re-organize the clothes
closet, switching over from
summer to winter. Same goes for the outdoor
and garden furniture. All of this in addition
to our busy work schedules, the kids' sports
schedule, homework, daily chores, cooking,
cleaning, laundry, thoughts of Christmas
baking beginning to worm their way into my
brain and worse Christmas shopping! Ugh.
My list of things to do is long, long, long. Im
ramped up, Im stressed and Im exhausted.
I need rest and relaxation. I begin to smile. I
know what I have to do. The anticipation is
easing the tension as I can already feel my toes
sinking into warm silky, soft, lovely sand as I
scan the beach for the perfect Palapa. What a a holiday for just myself and my husband, I
wonderful way to soothe my soul.
might choose Tahiti for romantic dinners,
long walks along the beach, and a massage in
the day spa. Or a fantastic trip to Costa Rica
to immerse ourselves in the enchantment of
a rainforest. Wonderful!
But this trip is a family getaway. A time
to spend with our kids getting reacquainted.
Its easy to become carefree and see the world
through their eyes without the daily pressures.
Dont get me wrong, its a good life we have
but time off is important too. Time to relieve
stress of work and general pressures of life.

Oh, and I almost forgot about the snorkelling.
A day trip to our own remote island to look
at the beautiful, exotic sea life, the colours

Funny, we dont think

Weve arrived in paradise. The warm air

Are you keen to live life like a local on your cruise

vacation and stop in a different and charming port every
day? Well then, a river cruise might be just the thing.
Perhaps youre more interested in the array of activities
found onboard some of the fabulous ocean cruising
ships and want a Resort at Sea experience. Cruising can
provide pretty much the kind of vacation youd like, and
for practically any length of time. If youre only able to
take a short break, theres a ship for you. And if you want
to travel for two weeks or more, theres likely even more
to choose from. Whatever cruise you choose, you will
certainly make new friends, wonderful memories and
have a lot of stories to tell. And even better, a cruise can
be a lovely way to travel with family multi-generational
cruises are becoming more and more popular all the time
and virtually every cruise company is catering to families
with suitable accommodations and activities.
When its time to get away for that elusive vacation
where you can truly relax and recharge those
batteries, then perhaps youll consider a Caribbean
or European cruise?

Imagine floating down a peaceful river

amidst the gorgeous scenery of Germany,
Switzerland, Austria and Hungary.
Where castles, vineyards and medieval
villages are at virtually every bend of
the river and youll never tire of the view.

If its totally relaxing fun in the sun you desire, select a

3-, 4- or 7-day cruise to the Bahamas, Key West or some
of those gorgeous West Indies islands a wonderful
tropical escape.
If you have more time to spare, then we suggest a
European sojourn to the Mediterranean or perhaps the
Baltic, where you can immerse yourself for up to 2 weeks
in all things Old World, with castles, ancient squares
and piazzas, cathedrals and famous monuments at your
doorstep never mind some of the worlds best cuisine!
A cruise, whether by river or on the oceans, can offer
you such a wide variety of choices and experiences, so
theres always a style of ship for you, from small and
luxurious to large and contemporary, and lots in between.
Theres a cruise for everyone, and making the right choice
is a breeze when you ask your Carlson Wagonlit Travel
Advisor to assist.
We know there are a myriad of ships and cruise
lines out there, all offering fantastic onboard
accommodations, inclusions and a wide selection of
dining and entertainment choices so it may seem a
little confusing to try and find the right one.
Perhaps you want to be busy and energetic with lots
of sightseeing and many people to meet and engage with.
Are you a foodie? A fitness nut? Or would you rather just
do the real get-away-from-it-all routine and sun on deck

or at a beach almost every day? Does exploring new

destinations and ports every day appeal to you? Or
would you rather stroll along a medieval cobblestone
street anticipating some local wine tasting. If this is a
family vacation with two or three generations involved,
there are great family suites and connecting staterooms
designed just for your comfort and enjoyment.
You can do and see so much on any cruise you
choose theres so much going on these days, with
many enriching cultural programs offered as well.
Most ships have a variety of great restaurants for your
dining pleasure and superb entertainment of all types

Now, along with our state-of-the-art, 100-passenger

Celebrity Xpedition, weve added two ships to our fleet to
give your clients even more choices in the Galapagos Islands:
our mid-sized, 48-passenger Celebrity XperienceSM and our
intimate, 16-passenger Celebrity XplorationSM. Together,
these three stunning ships offer your clients six unique
itineraries, 15 islands, more than 30 ports of call, and multiple
packages from which to choose.

performance or at a sing-along in the piano bar. Maybe a

wager in the casino or a movie under the stars complete
with popcorn.
If youve been considering a river cruise and want a
more relaxed vacation, then theres a great deal of choice
available. River ships are more intimate than ocean ships,
mainly due to their size and length and the need to fit
along the European or Asian rivers, sailing under the many
bridges along each route. If you really want an immersive
and cultural experience on your cruise and prefer a ship with
about 130 to 160 other guests, then a river cruise is ideal.
Nowadays there are several dining options offered on most
river cruises, but on most
nights youll dine in the
main restaurant with
like-minded guests.
Youll enjoy coming
together in the early
evening to share stories
of your day, listen to your
cruise director explain
the next port of call
and then, perhaps after
dinner, listen to a guest
lecturer, enjoy some
classical violin music
or simply retire to your
room to watch a good
movie or documentary.
Life is certainly slower
on the rivers, but its
also tremendously
charming and a great
way to see famous
cities such as Budapest,
Prague, Vienna, Cologne,

on the ocean-going vessels from classical to jazz, to

rock and dance and late-night disco, if thats your thing!
And there are extensive kids programs too.
If youre time-challenged, then a quick long weekend
getaway may be ideal, with a variety of ships sailing from
Florida to the Bahamas. We would recommend a 7-night
cruise at a minimum, as the whole point is to recharge
and relax, as well as reconnect. And thats where a cruise
is more than ideal everyone can do their thing during
the day, whatever that may be, and come together in
the evening with a choice of cocktail venues, then dine
together and end the evening at a show, concert, comedy

Nuremberg, Amsterdam, Basel and more.

France is now welcoming more and more river ships
for a variety of itineraries, many including opportunities
for food and wine tasting, and the rivers of Asia are also
becoming popular the Irrawaddy in Myanmar (formerly
Burma) and the Mekong in Cambodia and Vietnam offer
insight into a whole different way of life.
Whatever kind of cruise you choose or whichever
ocean, sea or river you long to explore theres a vacation
ready and waiting for you, along with the opportunity to
make some wonderful memories and also to truly relax
and recharge.

A beach vacation is one of the most restorative, restful
and rejuvenating ways to reset your stressed-out system.
Theres nothing quite like it. Think of it as being rewarded
for all your hard work by sinking your toes into the sand,
soaking up some sunny vitamin D, breathing in that salty
air and bobbing along in warm turquoise waves. A glorious

Your travel
guardian angel
y

by Anne-Marie Marais
ears ago, travel advisors were the only
way you would book travel. But with
the birth of the Internet and booking
travel online, many people turned to self-serve.
However, as life gets busier, with work,
family and other commitments, we feel
more starved for time. And even though we
may have felt like booking our own travel
online was quicker, it just isnt anymore.
When we look at our lives, we do what we can
to make them more efficient and easier by finding
those who can more effectively manage tasks for
us. Why wouldnt we look to the expertise of a
travel advisor to help us create memorable travel
experiences for our families, friends and ourselves?
We can see the increased usage of travel
advisors in new research from the American
Society of Travel Agents (ASTA), mentioned
on Skift.com*: In the last year, 22 percent of
Americans from households earning more than
$50,000 booked travel through a travel agent,
an increase from 14 percent just three years ago.
Millennials are more likely to use an agent than any
demographic group of older travellers, surprisingly.
In Canada, the data also supports the
millennial usage of travel advisors. According
to the National Post**, The millennials
want someone who knows better than they
do to book their trip for them, and like the
Boomers and matures, want to see some
pretty bucket list-y type trips. They want
everything from airport transfers to restaurant
bookings to experiences and activities booked.
This is so true, as travel for pleasure is not just
the booking of a flight. There are hotels, activities,
restaurants and experiences, plus the paperwork,
like visas, that must be considered and managed.

When I was embarking on the trip of a lifetime

to Australia and New Zealand, I looked to the
expertise of a travel advisor to find me the best deals
and organize all the various parts of my journey.
With the international and domestic flights,

ground travel, accommodations, experiences,

activities and paperwork necessary for such an
important journey, I knew that a travel advisor was
the way to go. I didnt want to try and keep all of
this organized while I was busy working to make
the money to afford such a trip, nor did I have
the expertise to make this trip all that it could be.
My travel advisor made me feel important and I
was glad that they were joining me on the planning
of this travel journey. Throughout the process,
her excitement grew, as did mine. And it was
good. to know that she was there managing the
planning and bookings, while working with me

to ensure all my needs were being met.
From first-time travellers to experienced
travellers like me, using a travel advisor
gives you peace of mind and opens you
up to a world of destinations that you
might not have previously considered.
We have become accustomed to booking
our travel online, but as mentioned, many
are returning to working with a travel
advisor and this is why.

Travel and destination

knowledge

When it comes to travel, the advice of a

travel advisor is worth its weight in gold.
Sure, your friends and networks may have
suggestions and stories of their experiences,
but travel advisors dont just have stories,
they have solutions. They have the time
and knowledge to listen to your needs and
then find and build the right experience
for you. They have travelled the world and
work closely with hotels, airlines, package
providers and destinations so that they
can provide you with a complete picture
as they pinpoint the right vacation for you.

Access to the best value

and deals

Travel advisors have relationships in every

sector of travel. Its these connections that
they use to help find the best deals and trips
to meet your needs. These advisors are on

16

your side and want to create the perfect

vacation for you, at the best price to fit your
budget. Different from when you book
your travel online, travel advisors take
care of all the legwork and they save you
time and money. With your requests in
mind, they hit the ground running to find
and provide you with a variety of options.
By working with a travel advisor you
dont have to spend hours online putting
together what you think will be a perfect
vacation. They have the insider tips that
can help you with things like picking the
right time of year to travel, telling you about
the perks and benefits of one location over
another plus they usually have other tricks
up their sleeve. From something as simple,
yet beneficial, as free room upgrades, to
shipboard credits, they can give you
what faceless online travel booking cant.

Service

We all like to be treated well and feel

special. When you book online, youre
just a credit card number. However,
when you work with a travel advisor,
they provide a service that can make
your life and travel so much simpler and
less stressful. They have travel knowledge
like no other and they can find you the
best deals while making sure that all is
covered throughout the travel booking
and enjoyment phases. Just imagine being

Unlike booking online and hoping for

the best, travel advisors only have you
and your best vacation in mind. They
understand all the fine print in those terms
and conditions and know what visas and
other documents youll need. And most
importantly, they can work with you to

had the wonderful opportunity to

sit down and chat with Brent Ridge
who, along with his partner Josh
Kilmer-Purcell, won the Amazing
Race in 2012. This duo have also
created and own the company
Beekman 1802, which includes a TV show,
a mercantile, bestselling cookbooks and
much more. And their accomplishments

dont stop there. Theyre also goat farmers,

world travellers and have a long list of other
achievements so far in their lives.
These world travellers are true believers
and have experienced firsthand the change
that can come from travel and thats what I
wanted to chat with Brent about.
To begin, I wanted to know more about
their love of travel and what has led them to

this point in their life where theyre inviting

fellow travellers to enjoy a Trip of a Lifetime
with them.
Back in 2012, Brent and Josh won the
Amazing Race, but that wasnt where their
love of travel began. Like many, they began
travelling in their college years. Brent took
advantage of those great courier tickets,
which opened up the world to travellers on
17

a budget who knew how to travel light. And

Josh enjoyed what many of us have: touring
around Europe during college summers.
As they look at the journeys and experiences
theyve embarked on, I wondered, other than

the obvious, why are they travellers? Their

reason is a beautiful one: We learned at a
young age, and have seen others learn at all
ages, that when you experience people and
cultures different than your own, you always
return home with a deeper understanding of
humanity's similarities.
When the Amazing Race experience
presented itself, they knew that they needed to
take advantage of it. Josh and Brent are strong
believers in saying yes to opportunities that
will help them grow. As Brent said, you only
grow when you go.
As they travelled the world with the
Amazing Race, they were able to interact with
the world in a different way. The brand of the
show is known around the world, plus running
around with a camera guy and a sound person
makes you a bit more conspicuous.
This experience gave them a new
perspective and opened their eyes to how we
take so much for granted. As Brent said, It
is when we travel and visit other countries
that we become more patriotic and truly
appreciate what you have.
I wondered, what their passion for
travelling is. Brent told me, "Our desire has
never been about accumulating money or
things. Instead, we desire to accumulate
experiences.
And where does Brent think this passion
for travel has come from? Our passion for
travel probably comes from the fact that we
both grew up in very rural places where all you
could do was read through the encyclopedia
in the library and dream of far off places. You
can say that we are dreamers, then. And our
dreams are coming true.
We hear terms like Bucket List or Trip of
a Lifetime more and more these days. They are
dreams or hopes that we will someday enjoy a
unique trip after having saved and fantasized
for years. It was a trip like that which Joshs
parents embarked on that influenced Brent
and Josh to start their Trip of a Lifetime
initiative.
They saw that for many people, trying
to plan and make a dream, like travel, come
true can be a challenge and they wanted to
help. What if they created an amazing trip

and invited others to come along with them?

Travelling together in small groups with
likeminded people is an amazing chance
for community building, while providing
people with the service to help them reach
their travel goals and dreams.
For 2017, the Trip of a Lifetime is to India.
But why India? Brent mentioned that India
can be a challenging destination for people
to plan and book on their own. Additionally,
by travelling within a small group, people
may feel safer and more at ease. Plus, there
is no question that India is a country of great
history, culture, colour and tastes. And by
planning this trip around Holi, the festival
of colours, travellers will have an experience
like no other.
Through Brent and Joshs travels, theyve
seen and experienced so many different
aspects of the world, so when they go about
planning travel, like this Trip of a Lifetime, they
include what they call the Six Pillars. Its with
these pillars that travellers who join this trip to
India will get a true local experience that will
change and recharge them.

A journey
as unique as
the destination
Traditional yet modern. Secular yet spiritual.
Rustic yet regal. India is perhaps best defined
as a collection of contradictions, a land sure to
touch your heart and challenge your perceptions
with its beauty, cultural diversity and history.
This Trip of a Lifetime, like all Beekman adventures, is meant to help a small group of travelers
explore this incredible part of the world together. Over 10 days, you will journey through
the Golden Triangle. You will visit Delhi, Indias
bustling capital; Agra, home to the incomparable
Taj Mahal; and Jaipur, land of kings.

MaSTeR

Within this pillar, travellers will hear and

learn firsthand from local people about the
country, the cities and the culture.

MeaNDeR

To truly embrace a destination, one must get

off the bus or out of the car and just walk. You
cant really feel a place by looking through
a bus window, so on this trip there will be
walking, or meandering, to truly experience
the culture.

GRoW

As goat farmers, it is very important for Brent

and Josh to see and experience the agricultural
side of a country. And its through this pillar
that people can better understand a country,
its people, its food and more.

GiVe

Within each trip there is an element, or pillar,

of philanthropy. We want to, and should want
to, give back to the countries we visit.

TaSTe

Absolutely no trip would be complete without

enjoying all the tastes that the country has to
offer. Partaking in the Indian traditions and
tastes through a culinary journey is a strong
and important pillar of this Trip of a Lifetime.

TReaT

We travel to experience, grow and relax. So

at the end of this Trip of Lifetime, a treat is
included, one of luxury and comfort. It helps
round out the experience of a trip, as you go
home with the feeling that you had a great
vacation and are now well rested and relaxed.
These are the six pillars that make an
experience like this Trip of Lifetime to India
an enriching and relaxing one. It is, and
should be, the goal of all travel to return not
just relaxed, but changed.
