TRANSLATORS NOTES
This is a partial and unofficial translation.
In the revised Martyrologium Romanum of 2004, many entries are prefixed with an asterisk *. Such
entries are read only in the places or religious families particularly associated with them. In order to
make this translation possible, such entries have not been included, unless they refer either to a member
of the Dominican family (friar, nun, sister or tertiary), or to a saint associated with Australia, New
Zealand, Papua New Guinea or the Solomon Islands. That is why the numbering is not consecutive.
Entries from the Dominican Catalogus Hagiographicus are prefixed with the symbol .
In general, the translator has followed the directives in the most recent Church document on translation,
Liturgicam Authenticam, as well as, mutatis mutandis, the Ratio Translationis proposed by ICEL for
the English translation of the Roman Missal. Nevertheless, while the sentence structure of the Latin has
been respected, and often emulated, it has been necessary sometimes to cut a very long sentence into
two shorter English sentences. The New Revised Standard Version has been used for the extracts from
Holy Scripture, and, as far as possible, echoes of scripture found in the elogia of the saints and the
prayers of the Martyrology should also echo that translation.
As regards place names, in general the modern place name is given where it exists. Thus Gratianpoli
is rendered at Grenoble, prope Ambianum is near Amiens, Csaromagi is at Chelmsford, and so
on. Occasionally, for the sake of clarity, the ancient name is given, with the modern name added in
square brackets; thus Laucn is translated as at Leuconay [Saint-Valery-sur-Somme]. Following the
practice of the Latin Martyrology, however, the names given for tribes, districts and political or
geographical divisions are generally the anglicised versions of the name in use at the time the saint in
question lived. Thus the city of Tours is in Lyonnaise Gaul in the time of Saint Venatius (5th century)
but in Nuestria by the time of Saint Leobard (593 ).
When the Martyrology is read in the liturgy, the announcement of the day of the lunar month is
optional. In this fascicle, the day of the lunar month is given for 2012. However, using the table
printed at the head of each day, the correct lunar day may be found for any year under the letter
corresponding to that year. Here are the letters for the next few years:

Similarly, the announcement of moveable feasts has been set out for 2012. Obviously, these (Ash
Wednesday, First Sunday of Lent, Palm Sunday, Easter Sunday) must be adjusted for other years.
The reading of the Martyrology is normally done liturgically after Lauds (Morning Prayer), though it
may also follow one of the little hours. In any case, the saints of the next day are always announced.
The Martyrology is not read on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. On Easter Sunday, the
Lords Resurrection is first announced; then follows the announcement of the date (and moon) of the
next day (Easter Monday), and the saints of that Easter Monday.

Prepared by the Liturgical Commission of the Province of the Assumption, 2012

ORDER OF READING THE MARTYROLOGY

WITHIN THE LITURGY OF THE HOURS
1. In choir, the reading is usually done at Lauds (Morning Prayer), after the Concluding
Prayer of the hour. The reader begins immediately with the announcement of the
following day. The reading concludes with these words:
V. Precious in the eyes of the Lord.
R. Is the death of his faithful.
2. Then a brief reading from scripture may follow, which the reader concludes acclaiming:
V. The word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God
3. After the reading, the priest of deacon presiding says one of the prayers of the
Martyrology, or the following:
4. May Holy Mary and all the Saints
intercede for us with the Lord,
that we may merit to be helped and saved by Him
who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
R. Amen.
A lay person who leads the celebration in the absence of an ordinary minister does the
same.
5. Then follows the blessing and dismissal, according to the following formulas:
May the Lord bless us,
and keep us from all evil,
and bring us to everlasting life.
And may the souls of the faithful departed
through the mercy of God
rest in peace. R. Amen.
V. Go in peace.
R. Thanks be to God.
6. If this does not seem suitable, however, nothing prevents the reading of the
Martyrology at any of the minor Hours in a similar fashion.
7. At a minor Hour, the reading is done immediately after the Concluding Prayer, as
above. At the end, the verse Precious is added, then the acclamation Let us praise the
Lord in the usual fashion, or n. 4. above may be followed.
8. In reading the elogia, a moveable feast, should it occur, is read in first place, using the
formulas given below.
On Easter Sunday, however, before the elogia of the following day are read, the
memory of the Lords Pasch takes first place.
9. On Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday the reading of the Martyrology is
entirely excluded, the elogia of the Saints being omitted this time round.
10. On the vigil of the Lords Nativity, after the announcement of the 24th December, the
solemn proclamation of the Lords Nativity is sung with its own melody.
11. In proclaiming the Martyrology, the mention of the lunar day is optional after the
announcement of the current day.

ORDER OF READING THE MARTYROLOGY

12. The elogia of the Saints or Blesseds marked with an asterisk are only read in those
dioceses or religious families for which the cult of this Saint or Blessed has been
conceded.
13. If any memorial happens to be transferred to or from another day, at the end of the
relevant elogium mention is made of the translated to or from which it has been moved:
To indicate the day to which it is translated: Their (His) (Her) memory, however, is
kept among us (this year) on .
To indicate the day from which it has been moved: Saint N., whose birthday is
inscribed on

Bar 5: 5-7

Arise, O Jerusalem, stand upon the height;

look towards the east,
and see your children gathered from west and east
at the word of the Holy One,
rejoicing that God has remembered them.
For they went out from you on foot,
led away by their enemies;
but God will bring them back to you,
carried in glory, as on a royal throne.
For God has ordered that every high mountain and the everlasting hills be made low
and the valleys filled up, to make level ground,
so that Israel may walk safely in the glory of God.

The Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Wis 10: 9-12

Wisdom rescued from troubles those who served her.

When a righteous man fled from his brothers wrath,
she guided him on straight paths;
she showed him the kingdom of God,
and gave him knowledge of holy things;
she prospered him in his labours,
and increased the fruit of his toil.
When his oppressors were covetous,
she stood by him and made him rich.
She protected him from his enemies,
and kept him safe from those who lay in wait for him;
in his arduous contest she gave him the victory,
so that he might learn that godliness is more powerful than anything else.
R.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

emorial of Saint Polycarp, bishop and martyr, who was a disciple of Blessed John
and who is venerated as a witness to the final apostolic times. Under the emperors
Marcus Antoninus and Lucius Aurelius Cmmodus, when almost ninety years of

population in the amphitheatre, giving thanks to God the Father that he was found worthy to be
numbered among the martyrs and to share the chalice of Christ.
2. At Sirmium in Hungary, Saint Sirnus or Sinrus, a martyr. He was a gardener, denounced

he First Sunday of Lent, when, following the example given by our Lord Jesus Christ,
the venerable sacred obligation of the annual Lenten observance begins,.

1. The commemoration of Saint Alexander, bishop, who as a famous old man, on fire with
zeal for the faith, was made bishop of the Church of Alexandria after Saint Peter. He

2. At Bologna in milia, Saint Faustianus, bishop, who strengthened and built up by the word
of his preaching a Church troubled by persecution.
3. At Gaza in Palestine, Saint Porphyrius the bishop. Born at Thessaloniki, he lived as an
anchorite for fifteen years at Sceti, and just as many across the Jordan, outstanding in his

passed away in peace with the venerable holy ones.
5. At Arcies in Champagne in Gaul, St. Victor, the hermit, whose praises Saint Bernard wrote.
6. At Florence in Tuscany, Saint Andrew, bishop.

1. At Alexandria in Egypt, the commemoration of the holy martyrs Julian and Eunus.
Because he was so crippled by the gout that he could neither stand nor walk about, Julian
was brought to the judge by two servants, who carried him in a chair. One of these denied
the faith, but the other, called Eunus, was steadfast in confessing Christ with his master.
These two were therefore sentenced to be placed on camels and paraded around the whole
city and then, in the sight of the people, to be flogged to death, under the emperor Decius.
2. Also, the martyr Saint Besa, a soldier, who, because he restrained those who were insulting
the aforesaid martyrs, was reported to the judge and, remaining constant in the faith, was
beheaded.
4. At Lyons in Gaul, Saint Baldomer, a subdeacon, a man devoted to God.
5. At Constantinople, Saints Basil and Procopius of the Decapolis, monks, who at the time of
the emperor Leo Isaurius III, fought strenuously for the veneration of the sacred Icons.
6. At the monastery of Narek in Armenia, the monk Saint Gregory, Doctor of the Armenians,
eminent in his teaching, writing and mystical knowledge.
8. At London in England, Saint Anna Line, widow and martyr. When her husband died in
exile because of the Catholic Faith, she provided a house in the city for priests, for which
she was hanged by the rope at Tyburn under Queen Elizabeth I. The blessed priests and
martyrs Mark Barkworth, from the Order of Saint Benedict, and Roger Filcock, from the
Society of Jesus, suffered with her, drawn and quartered by the sword while still breathing.

V. Precious in the eyes of the Lord.

into prison and condemned to death under King James VI, he accepted the glorious
palm of martyrdom on the gallows.

with the Greeks, governed the Church with vigilance and prudence.
3. At Cordoba, in the Vandal region of Spain, Saint Leocritia, virgin and martyr. Born into a
Moorish family, she shone with the faith of Christ covertly, and, when she was captured
with Saint Eulogius at home, she passed into glory by being decapitated on the fourth day
after his martyrdom.
5. At York in England, Blessed William Hart, priest and martyr. Ordained at the English
College in Rome, he was hanged by a noose and disembowelled under Queen Elizabeth I,
because he had persuaded others to embrace the Catholic faith.
6. At Paris in France, Saint Louise de Marillac, a widow, who led the Institute of the
Daughters of Charity by her example in order to assist the poor, fulfilling the work outlined
by Saint Vincent de Paul.
7. At Vienna in Austria, Saint Clement Mary Hofbauer, priest of the Congregation of the
Most Holy Redeemer, who worked marvellously to spread the faith in far-off lands and to
reform ecclesiastical discipline. Outstanding with insight as well as virtue, he impressed
not a few outstanding scientists and artists, so that they entered the church.

Marcian, the governor, and was finally tied in a sack containing serpents and drowned in
the sea.
5. At Cologne in Germany, the bishop Saint Heribert, who was Chancellor to Emperor
Otto III. Elected without seeking it to the episcopal see, he ceaselessly educated the clergy
and people by example of his virtue, which he also commended by his preaching.

aint Patrick the bishop, who as a young man was taken as a captive from Britain to
Ireland, then, having gained his freedom, sought to be numbered among the clergy and
went back to that same island, where, as a bishop, he actively proclaimed the gospel to
the people and firmly established the Church, until he died in the Lord in the city of
Downpatrick in Ireland.

2. The commemoration of many holy martyrs at Alexandria in Egypt, who at the time of the
emperor Theodosius, as the number of Christians was on the increase, were arrested by the
devotees of Serapis and, when they refused to adore the idol, were most savagely
slaughtered.
3. At Chalons in Burgundy, in Gaul, the bishop Saint Agricola, who for almost fifty years
ruled this church and strengthened it with various exhortations.
4. At Nivelles in Brabant, St. Gertrude, a virgin. Though of noble birth, she took the sacred
veil of virgins from the bishop Saint Amando, and wisely led a monastery built by her
mother, assiduous in the reading of Sacred Scripture, assiduous too in vigils and fasts,
finally worn out by austerity.
5. On the island of Cyprus, Saint Paul the monk, who, when he defended the cult of Sacred
Icons, was burnt to death.
7. At Olmtz in Moravia, Saint Jan Sarkander, priest and martyr, who, as parish priest of
Holeov, when he refused to reveal the secrets of the confessional, was tortured on the rack,
and then was thrown still breathing into prison, where he died after a month.
8. Amongst the Hurons in Canada, the passion of Saint Gabriel Lalemant, a priest of the
Society of Jesus, who with laborious zeal spread the glory of God in the language of the
local people, until he was dragged to the cruellest of tortures by the hostile worshippers of
idols. His memory is kept, with that of his companions, on 19th October.

aint Cyril, bishop of Jerusalem and doctor of the Church, who, having suffered
steadfastly many insults on account of the faith from the Arians, and often expelled
from his see, wonderfully expounded to the people the Scriptures, the sacred mysteries
and orthodox teaching by his sermons and catechetical instructions.

2.
The commemoration of Saint Alexander, bishop and martyr, who, coming from
Cappadocia to Jerusalem, accepted the pastoral care of the Holy City, founded a precious
library and opened a school. Later, when he now stood out by reason of the venerable white
hairs of his old age, he was led to Csarea and imprisoned. There he completed his martyrdom
for confessing Christ.
3.
At Lucca in Tuscany, the bishop Saint Frigidian, who hailed from Ireland. He gathered
clergy in a monastery, and, for the good of the people he diverted the course of the River
Serchio, thus providing fertile lands. He converted the Lombards who lived in his diocese to
the Catholic faith.
4.
At Tours in Nuestria, Saint Leobard, who shone as a hermit with wonderful abstinence
and humility in a little cell close to the monastery of Marmoutier.
5.
At Saragossa in north-eastern Spain, the bishop Saint Braulio, who offered Saint
Isidore, his friend, help in reforming ecclesiastical discipline throughout Spain, and who was
rightly ranked second only to him for wisdom and eloquence.
6.
At the town of Wareham in England, Saint Edward, King of the English, who, while
still a youth, was killed in a treacherous act by servants of his step-mother.
7.
At Mantua in Lombardy, the passing of Saint Anselm, bishop of Lucca. Most faithful
to the Roman see, in the investiture dispute he handed his episcopal ring and pastoral staff,
which he had accepted from Emperor Henry IV, into the hands of Pope Gregory VII, and,
expelled from his see by clergy who refused common life, he was sent by the Pope, whose
energetic assistant he was, as legate to the Lombards.
8.
At Cagliari in Sardinia, Saint Salvatore de Horta Grionesos, a religious of the Order of
Friars Minor, who became a humble instrument of Christ for the health of body and soul.

servants of God.
At Pavia, in Italy, Blessed Isnard of Chiampo (or of Vicenza), priest of the Order of

through whom God worked many miracles.
Also at Pavia in Italy, Blessed Sybilline Biscossi, a Sister of Penance of Saint Dominic, a
pure virgin, blind in the body but mentally bright with the light of the Holy Spirit, who
shone wonderfully with miracles and virtues. Together with Blessed Isnard, she is

their way of living with Roman customs.
6. At the monastery of Fontenelle in Nuestria, the burial of Saint Wulfram, a monk who was
elected bishop of Sens. He set himself to enrich the Frisian people with the gospel message;

venerated the holy images, he was driven into exile by the emperor Leo the Armenian.
8. In the laura of Saint Sabbas in Palestine, the passion of twenty holy monks, who were
suffocated with smoke by Saracen invaders in the church of the Mother of God.
At Siena in Italy, Blessed Ambrose Sansedone, a priest of the Order of Preachers and a
pupil of Saint Albert the Great. Simple yet wise, he held the chair of Sacred Theology,
insisting nevertheless on preaching tirelessly, a gracious man in every respect. He is
remembered in the liturgy on 18th October, the anniversary of the approval of his cult.
10. At Prague in Bohemia, Saint John Nepomuce, priest and martyr, who in caring for the
Church received many injuries from King Wenceslaus IV, and, exposed to torment and
torture, was finally thrown still breathing into the River Moldeau.
15. At Bilbao in Gascon Spain, Saint Maria Josefa del Corazn de Jess, virgin, who founded
the Congregation of the Servants of Jesus of Charity and formed them particularly in the
care of the sick and the poor.

aint Isidore, bishop and doctor of the Church. A disciple of his brother Leander, he
succeeded him in the see of Seville in Betica in Spain. He wrote many works with
erudition, convoked and presided at many synods, and wisely dedicated himself to zeal
for the Catholic Faith and the observance of ecclesiastical discipline.

2. At Thessaloniki in Macedonia, the holy martyrs Agathopodes, a deacon, and Theodulus, a

lector. Under the Emperor Maximian and the presidency of the governor Faustinus, they
were cast into the sea with stones tied to their necks, on account of their confession of the
Christian faith.
3. At Milan in Liguria, the burial of Saint Ambrose the bishop, who went to meet Christ, the
vanquisher of death, on Holy Saturday. His memory is recalled however on seventh of
December, the day of his episcopal ordination.
4. At Constantinople, Saint Plato the hegumen, who struggled for many years with
unconquered spirit against the iconoclasts, and who set up the famous Studite monastery
with Theodosius his nephew.
7. At Palermo in Italy, St Benedict Massarari, who was called The Black, on account of the
colour of his skin. He was first a hermit, then a religious in the Order of Friars Minor. He
showed himself humble in all things and always full of faith in Divine Providence.

V. Precious in the eyes of the Lord.

Saint Vincent Ferrer, priest of the Order of Preachers. Among us, his memory is
celebrated on the fifth day of May, the anniversary of the translation of his body.
2. At Thessaloniki in Macedonia, Saint Irene, virgin and martyr. When, contrary to an edict
of the emperor Diocletian, she concealed the sacred books, she was forced into a public
house of ill-repute; then she was burnt with fire at the command of the governor Dulcetius,
under whom her sisters, Agape and Chionia had suffered together previously.
3. At Seleucia in Persia, Saint Pherbutha, a widow, and sister of the saintly bishop Simeon.
She consummated her martyrdom, together with her lady-in-waiting, under King Sapor II.
4. Also, the commemoration of one-hundred and eleven men and nine women, martyrs,
gathered together from various places into the royal cites, who, when they steadfastly
refused to renounce Christ and adore fire, were thrown into the flames by order of the same
king.
5. At Regio in Morocco, the suffering of the holy martyrs who, in the persecution of Genseric,
the Arian king, were slain in church on Easter Day. Among them was a lector who, while
he was singing the Alleluia in the pulpit, was pierced through the throat by an arrow.
6. In the abbey of Grande-Sauve in Aquitaine, Saint Gerald, the abbot. Coming from the
abbey of Corbey, he was chosen as abbot of Laon. After making holy pilgrimages, he
secluded himself in the deep forest.
9.

At Palma on the island of Majorca in Spain, Saint Catherine Toms, virgin. Having
entered the Order of Regular Canonesses of Saint Augustine, she shone with contempt for
herself and abnegation of the will.

10. At Kaufbeuren, on the Wertach River in Bavaria, Germany, Saint Maria Crescentia Hss,
virgin, who, as a sister of the Third Order of Saint Francis, strove to communicate to others
the fervour of the Holy Spirit, with which she was on fire.

The Martyrology is not read on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday.

1. At Alexandria in Egypt, the bishop Saint Maxim, who, when he was a priest, joined
confession of the faith with exile as a companion of the bishop Denis, whom he afterwards
succeeded.
2. In the same place, Saint desius, a martyr, brother of Saint Apphian. Under the emperor
Maximian, he openly confronted the judged who had ordered that virgins dedicated to God
be thrown to the lions, wherefore he was arrested by soldiers and tortured for Christ the
Lord, and was drowned in the sea.
3. At Sirmium in Hungary, Saint Demetrius, the martyr, who is venerated with loving
devotion everywhere in the East, particularly in Thessaloniki.
4. At Csarea in Cappadocia, Saint Eupsychius the martyr, who consummated his martyrdom
under the emperor Julian the Apostate, because he destroyed the temple of the goddess
Fortuna.
5. At Le Mans in Lyonnaise Gaul, Saint Liborius the bishop.
6. At Amda in Mesopotamia, the bishop Saint Acacius, who roused the clergy by hurling
fearful exhortations and who even melted down the sacred vessels of the church and sold
them to the Romans in order to redeem captives of the Persians.
7. At Mons in Hainaut in Nuestria, Blessed Waldetrude, who was a sister of Saint Aldegund,
the wife of Saint Vincent Madelgarius and the mother of four saints. Following her
husbands example, she vowed herself to God and took the monastic habit in a monastery
that she herself had built.
8. At Jumiges, also in Nuestria, Saint Hugh, Bishop of Rouen, who ruled both the monastery
of Fontenelle and the churches of Paris and Bayeux. Finally, having resigned all these
offices, he was abbot of Jumiges.
V. Precious in the eyes of the Lord.
