DOMINICAN ADAPTATIONS
FROM THE
CATALOGUS HAGIOGRAPHICUS OP
UNOFFICIAL TRANSLATION
PORT MORESBY
A.D. MMXII
NOTES
TRANSLATORS NOTES
This is a partial and unofficial translation.
In the revised Martyrologium Romanum of 2004, many entries are prefixed with an asterisk *. Such
entries are read only in the places or religious families particularly associated with them. In order to
make this translation possible, such entries have not been included, unless they refer either to a member
of the Dominican family (friar, nun, sister or tertiary), or to a saint associated with Australia, New
Zealand, Papua New Guinea or the Solomon Islands. That is why the numbering is not consecutive.
Entries from the Dominican Catalogus Hagiographicus are prefixed with the symbol .
In general, the translator has followed the directives in the most recent Church document on translation,
Liturgicam Authenticam, as well as, mutatis mutandis, the Ratio Translationis proposed by ICEL for
the English translation of the Roman Missal. Nevertheless, while the sentence structure of the Latin has
been respected, and often emulated, it has been necessary sometimes to cut a very long sentence into
two shorter English sentences. The New Revised Standard Version has been used for the extracts from
Holy Scripture, and, as far as possible, echoes of scripture found in the elogia of the saints and the
prayers of the Martyrology should also echo that translation.
As regards place names, in general the modern place name is given where it exists. Thus Gratianpoli
is rendered at Grenoble, prope Ambianum is near Amiens, Csaromagi is at Chelmsford, and so
on. Occasionally, for the sake of clarity, the ancient name is given, with the modern name added in
square brackets; thus Laucn is translated as at Leuconay [Saint-Valery-sur-Somme]. Following the
practice of the Latin Martyrology, however, the names given for tribes, districts and political or
geographical divisions are generally the anglicised versions of the name in use at the time the saint in
question lived. Thus the city of Tours is in Lyonnaise Gaul in the time of Saint Venatius (5th century)
but in Nuestria by the time of Saint Leobard (593 ).
When the Martyrology is read in the liturgy, the announcement of the day of the lunar month is
optional. In this fascicle, the day of the lunar month is given for 2012. However, using the table
printed at the head of each day, the correct lunar day may be found for any year under the letter
corresponding to that year. Here are the letters for the next few years:

Similarly, the announcement of moveable feasts has been set out for 2012. Obviously, these (Ash
Wednesday, First Sunday of Lent, Palm Sunday, Easter Sunday) must be adjusted for other years.
The reading of the Martyrology is normally done liturgically after Lauds (Morning Prayer), though it
may also follow one of the little hours. In any case, the saints of the next day are always announced.
The Martyrology is not read on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. On Easter Sunday, the
Lords Resurrection is first announced; then follows the announcement of the date (and moon) of the
next day (Easter Monday), and the saints of that Easter Monday.
12. The elogia of the Saints or Blesseds marked with an asterisk are only read in those
dioceses or religious families for which the cult of this Saint or Blessed has been
conceded.
13. If any memorial happens to be transferred to or from another day, at the end of the
relevant elogium mention is made of the translated to or from which it has been moved:
To indicate the day to which it is translated: Their (His) (Her) memory, however, is
kept among us (this year) on .
To indicate the day from which it has been moved: Saint N., whose birthday is
inscribed on

So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at
the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth,
for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is
revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.
The Word of the Lord.

PRAYERS
At the end of the celebration in which the Martyrology is read, the priest may say, ad libitum,
the following formula, with hands joined and without saying, Let us pray. All respond: Amen.
May Holy Mary and all the Saints
intercede for us with the Lord,
that we may merit to be helped and saved by Him
who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Or he may say one of the following prayers:
1. Hear, O Lord, the supplications your people make
under the patronage of your Saints,
and grant that they may rejoice in peace in this present life
and find help for life eternal
Through Christ our Lord.1
2. May the sight of the great number
of your Saints gladden us, O Lord,
making our faith stronger
and bringing us consolation by the prayers of them all.
Through Christ our Lord.2
3. Grant us, O Lord, we pray,
that as we remember your Saints
we may rejoice in their unending care.
Through Christ our Lord.
4. O Lord our God,
bestow your grace abundantly upon us
and grant that by a holy life we may achieve
the victory of those whose glorious contests we celebrate.
Through Christ our Lord.
5. We praise your mercies, O Lord,
who never cease to encourage us
to hold the memories of the Saints close to our hearts,
humbly praying that we may experience the protection
of those whose memory we celebrate.
Through Christ our Lord.
6. May your peace penetrate our hearts, O Lord,
and, as you received your Holy Ones into the heavenly court,
may you command that, with their merits pleading for us,
fervent love may be poured out on us to eternity.
Through Christ our Lord.

emorial of Saint Polycarp, bishop and martyr, who was a disciple of Blessed John
and who is venerated as a witness to the final apostolic times. Under the emperors
Marcus Antoninus and Lucius Aurelius Cmmodus, when almost ninety years of

1. At Alexandria in Egypt, the commemoration of the holy martyrs Julian and Eunus.
Because he was so crippled by the gout that he could neither stand nor walk about, Julian
was brought to the judge by two servants, who carried him in a chair. One of these denied
the faith, but the other, called Eunus, was steadfast in confessing Christ with his master.
These two were therefore sentenced to be placed on camels and paraded around the whole
city and then, in the sight of the people, to be flogged to death, under the emperor Decius.
2. Also, the martyr Saint Besa, a soldier, who, because he restrained those who were insulting
the aforesaid martyrs, was reported to the judge and, remaining constant in the faith, was
beheaded.
4. At Lyons in Gaul, Saint Baldomer, a subdeacon, a man devoted to God.
5. At Constantinople, Saints Basil and Procopius of the Decapolis, monks, who at the time of
the emperor Leo Isaurius III, fought strenuously for the veneration of the sacred Icons.
6. At the monastery of Narek in Armenia, the monk Saint Gregory, Doctor of the Armenians,
eminent in his teaching, writing and mystical knowledge.
8. At London in England, Saint Anna Line, widow and martyr. When her husband died in
exile because of the Catholic Faith, she provided a house in the city for priests, for which
she was hanged by the rope at Tyburn under Queen Elizabeth I. The blessed priests and
martyrs Mark Barkworth, from the Order of Saint Benedict, and Roger Filcock, from the
Society of Jesus, suffered with her, drawn and quartered by the sword while still breathing.

aint Cyril, bishop of Jerusalem and doctor of the Church, who, having suffered
steadfastly many insults on account of the faith from the Arians, and often expelled
from his see, wonderfully expounded to the people the Scriptures, the sacred mysteries
and orthodox teaching by his sermons and catechetical instructions.
2.
The commemoration of Saint Alexander, bishop and martyr, who, coming from
Cappadocia to Jerusalem, accepted the pastoral care of the Holy City, founded a precious

hairs of his old age, he was led to Csarea and imprisoned. There he completed his martyrdom
for confessing Christ.
3.
At Lucca in Tuscany, the bishop Saint Frigidian, who hailed from Ireland. He gathered

energetic assistant he was, as legate to the Lombards.
8.
At Cagliari in Sardinia, Saint Salvatore de Horta Grionesos, a religious of the Order of
