OUR SCHOOL
SIG (School Improvement Grant)
At the end of the 2014 school year, Frank A. Sedita was classified as a priority school and as a result, received a
SIG (School Improvement Grant). The primary purpose of the SIG is to provide Local Education Agencies
(LEAs) with an opportunity to support the implementation of a whole-school change model in their Priority
Schools. This grant allows for three federally-designated models to do so: Turnaround, Restart, and
Transformation. The requirements and parameters set forth in this Request for Proposals (RFP) will serve as the
quality standard for an approvable SIG plan. The SIG plans in this RFP must be designed to meet one of the
following intervention models. Frank A. Sedita School was required to adopt the Transformation model.
Transformation Model
Replace the principal, but without the requirement to replace at least half the staff. Rather, the implementation
of approved Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR) plans would serve as the basis for rewarding
effective teachers and removing ineffective teachers after ample professional development opportunities.
As part of this model, the principal was removed, and a new one was appointed. The school has received
additional funding in order to turn around and raise test scores. Under this plan, we have 3 years to improve our
scores and become a school in good standing. Within these three years, we are monitored by the state and are
accountable to a certain criteria. We need to meet these requirements by the end of the three year deadline. If
we do not meet these requirements, the state will review our school again and make a determination based on
the school data.
Our Site Based Team that consists of stakeholders in the school will meet on a monthly basis to monitor
and review our SIG. We will make recommendations, and discuss areas of improvement that are
necessary to follow the SIG implementation.
You may view our complete SIG plan on our school website under the PARENT INVOLVEMENT tab.
Title I School
Title I, Part A (Title I) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, as amended (ESEA) provides financial
assistance to local educational agencies (LEAs) and schools with high numbers or high percentages of children
from low-income families to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards. Federal
funds are currently allocated through four statutory formulas that are based primarily on census poverty
estimates and the cost of education in each state. Frank A. Sedita School receives Title I funding that allows us
to have support in both Math and Reading.

PBIS & STUDENT CODE OF CODUCT

PBIS
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an integral and vital part of our school. This is a
program that rewards and recognizes students for being good! PBIS is an approach that tries to prevent
problems before they begin. By reducing behavioral problems in the building we create a safe atmosphere
where kids can learn better and teachers can teach more effectively.
HOW DOES PBIS WORK?
Be Safe
Be Respectful
Be Responsible

PBIS MATRIX
CHARACTER EDUCATION
CONDUCT and DISCIPLINE
At Frank A. Sedita School, we follow the Buffalo Public Schools Code of Conduct. Please refer to the district
website page under the tab, District Code of Conduct for the complete policy.
Discipline is an attitude which begins at home, is reinforced at school and applied throughout life. Students will
act in a respectful and polite manner toward all adults and students inside and outside the building. Open
defiance to any staff member in any way will result in disciplinary action according to the Code of Conduct.
FIGHTING or BULLYING will not be tolerated in school or on school property. If a student has a
problem with another student, they are to ask an adult to assist them. If you are aware of a serious problem that
may result in a fight, please report it to a teacher or the office. Any student caught threatening, chasing,
bullying, or trying to scare other students will be disciplined.

GENERAL POLICIES & PROCEDURES

ATTENDANCE/ABSENCES
It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that their children attend school regularly. Research proves
that students with high attendance achieve higher in school.
When a student is absent from school or class, parents must contact the childs school to report the
absence. Please call 816-3220 before 9am.
In addition to calling, parents must submit a written explanation of the absence to the homeroom teacher
upon the students return to school. If a note is not received the absence is marked illegal.
Parents are expected to work collaboratively with school personnel, to attend meetings and to respond to
attendance concerns.
PARENTS AS VOLUNTEERS
It is strongly encouraged that parents get involved within our Sedita school community. We have many
events/activities that occur after during and after school.
If you would like to volunteer, please fill out our Volunteer application located on our school website, or
request an application in the office.
PTO/HOMEROOM PARENTS
We are always looking for members to join the Frank A. Sedita PTO (Parent/Teacher Organization)!
If you would like to volunteer your time and join our PTO, please contact your students homeroom
teacher or our Parent Facilitator. Even if you can spare a short amount of time, this makes a
difference in your childs academic success.
VISITOR POLICY/CONFERENCES
At Frank A. Sedita, we enjoy visitors. However, if you plan on visiting your childs classroom, you need
to arrange this with the teacher ahead of time via email, phone, etc.
Any persons visiting or entering the school must enter through the Lowell St. main entrance and report
to the office.
While we appreciate parental involvement and support, please be considerate and schedule your
appointment with the teacher when visiting a classroom. You MAY NOT walk to the classroom if you
DO NOT have an appointment, or have checked in with the office.
When entering the office, if you have an appointment, you will be issued a visitor pass, and escorted to
the classroom.
ARRIVAL
All students are required to arrive to school on time. The doors open at 9:00am. When students are late, they
miss instructional time. This means that students will not loiter in the halls before or after school and will be
seated and ready to work at the start of class by 9:31.
Breakfast begins at 9:00am in the classroom.
All walkers will enter the Vermont St. door at 9:00am and report directly to their homeroom. Please do
not send your child to school before 9:00am as there is no supervision until that time. Any students arriving to
their homeroom past 9:20 must report to the main office for a late pass.
DISMISSAL

nurse and teachers about special needs or concerns.
If you or your child becomes ill with flu-like symptoms, including fever, body aches, runny nose, sore
throat, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, please contact your health care provider. Your child should remain
home and away from others for 7 days if they are diagnosed with the flu.
If a student requires medication during school hours for temporary or chronic medical conditions, a

administered by a school nurse or designee under the following conditions:
