Why this matters


The French Revolution served as a warning to nobility around the world that they could not
ignore the needs and wishes of the common people. Many of the themes that came to light
back then also appear in our modern day politics, as many argue that the middle class is being
ignored by a government controlled by the wealthy.

Revolution in France

Power to the people.

Two big things happened in 1789


1. The Third Estate broke away from the
Estates-General and formed the National Assembly,
which sought to provide true representative
government for the vast majority of people.
2. A famine hit, causing the unemployment and
financial distress to spike.

In late August 1789, the National Assembly declared that all men were born and
remain free and equal in rights.
