Humira, which is sold by Abbott Laboratories spinout AbbVie Inc., represented

the most spending among drugs in the Washington region last year. Nearly
$960,000 was spent promoting the immunosuppressant with varying uses, from
rheumatoid arthritis to Crohns disease.
When it comes to devices, orthopedics is the clear priority. Combining different
focus areas from the regions top 25 marketed devices including hips, spine and
knee devices, at least a third of spending went toward the specialty.

Five of the top 25 drugs promoted by drug companies in Greater Washington

treat Type 2 diabetes. Four more of those top drugs are blood thinners, while two
more treat multiple sclerosis.
Dr. Adriane Fugh-Berman, an expert on drug payments who works at
Georgetown University and the affiliated Medstar Georgetown University
Hospital, said these drugs have a common theme: They are more expensive than
cheaper generic versions offering the same or better mortality rates.
