Analyze Learners
Learners General Characteristics: The 2nd block Transition Math class is made up of 12
students. Of those 12, there are 7 males and 5 females all between the ages of 14-17. The
students range in ethic and cultural backgrounds with 3 whites, and 9 African American.
The social economic background is also varied between poverty level to middle class. All of
the students are served by special education for the various disabilities including Specific
Leaning disability (SLD), Emotional Disability (ED), and Intellectual disability (ID.) Due the
various disabilities the Math ability level of the students ranges from the approximate 3 rd
grade math level to an 8th grade level.
Learners Skill Base: All students have mastered the concept of muti-digit addition and
subtraction, students are currently working on mastering muti-multiplication and division
skills. Students are working to understand the use of decimal numbers and percentages to
compute sales price, discount, sales tax, and total price. The students are skilled in using
computers for social media and basic internet searches.
Learning Style: Around 10% of the students are predominantly Visual learners, 15% are
predominantly auditory leaners, and 75% are predominantly kinesthetic leaners.
State Objectives
State Standard:
6.RP.3 Apply the concepts of ratios and rates to solve real-world and mathematical
problems.
e. Understand that a percentage is a rate per 100 and use this to solve problems involving
wholes, parts, and percentages.
Lesson Objective 1:
The student will use the internet to locate the real world price of three different items they
would like to purchase using online retail market places with 100% accuracy.
Lesson Objective 2:
The student will use the internet to locate the best real world price of three different items
they would like to purchase using different online retail market places with 100% accuracy.

Lesson Objective 3:
The students will calculate and complete the pricing table including: retail price, discount
amount, sales, tax, and total cost, with 80% accuracy or 17pts based on the attached rubric.
Select Methods, Media, , and Materials
What are the methods (more than 2)?
1) Demonstration: teacher will start lesson by demonstrate the need steps to fill out the
(students have completed a pricing chart however there were multiply mistakes on
the last weekly quiz, this indicated that students have not yet mastered the concept
previously taught. Students will watch the teacher practice one item in her online
shopping cart with a randomly selected discount coupon. (whole Group)
2) Real world simulation: students will use the internet to look up items they would like
to buy to calculate the discount amount, sales price, sales tax, and total cost. (whole
group activity) Student must find the item in at least two different online retail stores
and select the best price.
3) Small group review: students struggling with the teacher model and teacher lead
example will meet with the teacher in the small group work area in the back of the
class to review and determine areas of weakness. Students struggling with the math
calculation may be allowed the accommodation of a calculator to check answers.
Students struggling with remember the step will be provided with a flow chart of the
step. (small group)
4) Individual review: Before turning in a completed chart each student will meet with the
teach individual to have work checked to find errors or mistakes in computation.
(individual)
Media: Teacher PowerPoint displayed with projector (whole group instruction)
Materials: Laptop or desktop computer with internet access per student (12), Printer,
Teacher created price table worksheet, teacher made coupons three per student

Utilize Media, Materials, and Methods

1. Preview the materials: The teacher will create fake coupons and them along with the
pricing table work sheet
2. Prepare the materials: Classroom computers and laptops will be checked and ready for
student use. Appropriate software and internet convectively will be accessible to the

students. Teacher will also check the classroom projector and teacher laptop
3. Prepare the environment: Desks are to be arranged in a manner that allows for whole
group demonstration. Also, computer stations must be accessible to all students to
complete various aspects of the assignment but also visible to the teacher.
4. Prepare the learners: Students will be prepared for this lesson during the lesson
Prior. Students have notes on Sales tax, discount amount, discount price, and total
coast which can be referred to as needed in their interactive Math Notebooks.
5. Provide the learning experiences:
Whole group: Teacher will review with whole class steps needed to find discount
amount, sales price, sales tax amount, and total cost of one item looked up via
amazon.com. She will model the steps needed and fill out her price chart as a teacher
lead model. Student will take notes for reference. Teacher will also explain how the
internet and online market places can help us find the best price for a wanted item (20
minutes)
Small Group: In groups students will brain storm items they would like to buy for
themselves or as gifts for others. Once students have brainstormed at least five items
they will random select three coupons. The student can decide with coupon to use on
which item. (10 minutes)
Individual: Using online market places (ie amazon, Walmart, target, ect.) students will
locate three of their selected items and calculate the discount amount, sales price, tax,
and total cost. (45 minutes)

Require Learner Participation

Whole group: Student will help teacher calculate math, select the best price from
different retail stores online, and take notes in their interactive notebook. (20 minutes)
Small Group: student will discuss with each other items they would like to buy (10
minutes)
Individual: students will use the provided price chart and selected coupons to calculate
the discount amount, sales price, tax, and total cost (45 minutes)
