Creating comic

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

The key concept for todays lessons is for students to understand how to properly use nouns, verbs, and
adjectives in a sentence.
Language Functions: identify, place, create

Discourse: group discussion

In the previous lesson, students were introduced to the functions of adjectives and how they can enhance
the quality of a sentence by adding imagery. This will help them be able to begin using adjectives
correctly in sentences.
In the next lesson, students will build on what they know so far and begin forming and using regular and
irregular plural nouns.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction: (4 minutes) TTW show a fun Youtube video showcasing adjectives to introduce what
we are doing today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_y5SlAZIkTI
Procedures:

TTW instruct the students by reviewing the different functions of nouns,

adjectives, and verbs. (5 minutes)

TTW walk the students through the process of logging onto gynzy.com and
navigating to the appropriate language arts games. TTW complete one game aloud
with the students helping her along the way. (15 minutes)

TSW complete one interactive game independently. TTW monitor accordingly.

(10 minutes)

TTW ask for a thumb up/thumb down response from students to let her know who
is finished with their game and who still needs more time. (1 minute)

Once the teacher gives the go ahead, TSW meet with their elbow partner to
discuss the following questions: (5 minutes)
HOTQ: Which function did you struggle more with in the
interactive game? Which one was easiest for you?
HOTQ: Why do you think the teacher had us do the game before
we complete our graded assignment?

After 5 minutes of elbow partnering, TTW pass out the Christmas themed handout
and the appropriate colored pencils/crayons to the students. (2 minute)
TSW be given 20 minutes to complete the handout to the best of their
ability.
After the 20 minutes, TTW collect the handouts to be recorded for a
grade.

TTW pull up the Toondoo website on the computer displaying on the screen for
students to see. TTW walk the students through the process of creating a simple
comic based off what we practiced today. (12 minutes)

TSW create their own comic relating to todays lesson. (30 minutes)
At the end of the allotted 30 minutes, TTW ask students to save what they have done
so far and remind them they will have 10 more minutes in tomorrows class to finish
up their comic so that it can be the best possible work.

TTW ask students to begin putting their computers away row by row (if laptops were
used), and get ready to switch subjects.

Closure: (5 minutes) As students are packing up from this lesson, TTW hold a class discussion to close

out. TTW ask the following to randomly chosen students:

Johnny, can you tell me again what purpose the verb has in a sentence?
Rebecca, can you tell me what exactly a noun is?
Eric, can you tell me why it is a good idea for us to use adjectives as writers?
ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
The formative assessment: TSW complete handout independently. This will be graded on correctness.
TSW also complete one online activity, which will count as their participation grade for the day.
The summative assessment: TSW create their own Toondoo comic illustrating what they have learned
thus far about nouns, verbs, and adjectives. The comic will be graded using a supplied rubric.
MODIFICATIONS:
The enriched students will be asked to create a more detailed comic of the content covered in order to
further challenge their creativity and knowledge of the subject.
For the non-mastery students, TSW work with a partner to create the comic.
