One of the most rewarding things I got in 2013 is the friendship of Dr. Badr Hashemi through his brilliant
and authoritative work on English Translation and Paraphrasing of the Qurn. In the year 2014, I
received from him the precious gift of The Divine 99 - The Blessed Names of Allh, The Names Full of
Blessings.
What a beautiful way to introduce the Asm-ul-usna The 99 Blessed Names of our Creator. The only
One Allh, the One God, the Absolute Who does not depend upon anybody, but everything depends upon
Him. No father, no son; He is Unique in all respects and nothing is like unto Him.
Mans knowledge of the unknown is relative with reference to the already known. So we will never be
able to fully understand Him. However in our search of our loving Creator we can feel His Being
everywhere through the perception of His 99-Names/Attributes. Allh manifests Himself to the world
through them.
Mystics in Islm say that Allh created Man on His own Image, and then infused in him His own breath
to make him as His Vicegerent on earth. However, only those will qualify for this honor who mould their
persons on the pattern of His Asm-ul-usna. For them He is nearer than their Jugular vein. They do not
need to travel to the mountains, leave the world and punish their bodies but simply look into their hearts.
They say: Nurture your nature according to the Nature of Allh. That is the ideal for the highest spiritual
development of Man. This journey begins with knowing, understanding and internalizing the Asm-ulusna which Dr. Badr Hashemi has presented as The Divine 99 in an eloquent and scholarly work with
verve and style. It is a cogent study of single authorship.
First of all, each Name is depicted in a beautiful artistic manner, followed by the proper pronunciation,
the Srahs/yt wherein it is revealed, its possible meanings, and the blessings with each of them. I am
indeed grateful to Dr. Hashemi for this inspiring contribution to the Qurnic Studies, and recommend it
for your daily thoughtful reading, and see them working in every bit of the universe and your own self.
This reminds me of the wise words of Sayyed Ali bin Abu Tlib, may Allh be pleased with him: One
who knows the reality of his own-self, will know the Reality of his Creator. In my opinion The Divine99 is the gateway to it.

The Divine 99 Researched and Explained by Badr Hashemi

The concept of the existence of a Supreme Divine Entity is a living reality with humankind from eternity to
eternity. The Qurn (Q.14:04) tells us that Allh The One Lord Supreme has been sending Messengers to various
nations with Messages in their own language. In each language, the Names or the Attributes represented by different
sounds and symbols were used for The One Lord Supreme.
The One Lord Supreme was known as El Shaddai to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Exodus 06:03). Later, He spoke to
Moses as YaHWeH and Elohim (Exodus 06:12); Elah, an Aramaic expression, written in the Tanakh (Jeremiah
10:11) describes the Jews' God. Jesus addressed Him as Eloi(Mark 15:34); and, to Muhammad Allh was the
proper name for The One Lord Supreme (Q.112:01). Interestingly, the Divine Names of Elohim, Elah, Eloi and
Elh (Q.43:84)/Allh are etymologically related and carry a close common thematic and audio denominator.
The Towrt Old Testament a fifteenth century BC document, lists at least 33 Divine Attributes: None beside
Him, None before Him, None like to Him, None good but He, Fills heaven and earth, God Is light, Love,
Unsearchable, Eternal, Omnipotent, Omniscient, Omnipresent, Immutable, Glorious, Most High, Perfect, Peace,
Holy, Just, True, Upright, Righteous, Good, Great, Gracious, Merciful, Compassionate, Forgiving, Sanctifier,
Unique, Transcendent, Savior, Owner, Master to be worshipped in spirit and in truth.
The Injl New Testament - preceding Islm by about six centuries, states the Divine Attributes: Salvation is
through His Name, Believers are to gather in His Name, Prayer is to be made in His Name. It stresses His strength,
sovereignty, and supremacy. The Everlasting Divine Entity emphasizes His unchangeableness and is connected with
His inexhaustibleness.
The Qurn Final Testament - uses a large number of Names/Attributes for Allh which indicates continuity of
the Divine Names/Attributes from the Towrt and the Injl. It makes an explicit reference to these Names/Attributes
as Al-Asm al-usn The Names, The Uniquely Beautiful - on four occasions:
The Names/Attributes portray expositions about the Divine Essence rather than doctrinal expositions concerning the
nature of Allh the One God.
The adth literature adds the expression of Al-Sift al-Uly - The Divine Attributes - to the Qurnic title of
Al-Asm al-usn. While the Qurn does not explicitly use the phrase 99 Names of Allh, the Prophet, Allh
bless him always, said: There are 99 Names of Allh; one hundred minus one. Whoever enumerates or commits
them to memory would get into Paradise. Reported by Al-Bokhri in [70]6410.
The Muslim Opening Prayer of every Salt is embedded with a 2-Word Phrase addressed to Allh: Wa Tabra-ka
Ismuka, i.e. And Full of Blessings is Your Name. Q.67:01, etc. state Tabraka Alladhi, i.e. Blessed is He. Again
Q.23:14 asserts Fa-Tabrak Allh Blessed is Allh. Thus, whatever Name He may have given to Himself has its
own blessings uniquely - both spiritual and material - bounty, luminosity and healing power to the one who recites it
repeatedly and regularly over time.
The Attributes - as adjectives, word constructs, or derivatives from Arabic infinitive verbal noun/nomen verbi - are
thematic in content and manifestation and their occurrence in the Qurn varies from one time to as many as one
hundred times. However, not every verb can be considered a Divine Name/Attribute. In form, however, every
Name/Attribute is a masculine singular.
They appear in 86 of 114 Surahs. The initial Surahs contain a major occurrence of almost all of them. They occur
solo as Al-Samad, Al-Wahhb, Al-Ghaniyye, etc; while those in pairs 36 add a different dimension to the mosaic,
like Al-Remn Al-Rem (pronounced as Ar-Remaanar-Reeem), Al-Tewwb Al-Rem (pronounced as At-
Page | 6
6
Tewwb-ur-Rem) and Al-ayy Al-Qeyym (pronounced as Al-ayy-ul-Qeyym), etc., three, four, five and more
appear together with much lesser frequency. Q.59:22-24 contains 17 of them in one place.
Some of The 99 Names do not occur literally in the Qurn like, for instance, Al-Qbidh, Al-Bsith, Al-Rfi'y,
Al-Mo'izz and Al-Mu'akhkhir, etc. Hence the list is liable to contain some variants. Each of The 99 Names and
Attributes listed in this book is in the order that it is enumerated in the related adth. With every Name/Attribute
the expression of Jella Jellaluh, with emphasis on the letter L both times, is added to signify Allhs Majesty and
Exaltation.
The Prophet, Allh bless him always, advised his companions to keep their hearts illuminated with the Dzikr, i.e.
Remembrance of Allh. And one way to do so was by repeatedly reciting The 99 Names while sitting in seclusion,
as it is in this Remembrance that the believers hearts would find inner peace, solace and satisfaction Q.13:28.
Thus the Dzikr of The 99 Names is one of the most diligent devotions as it illuminates ones heart thereby leading
to fulfill the requisites of Faith which entitles The Faithful to hope for Allhs Mercy and Compassion in this life,
and Success in the Life After Life.
The Qurn directs The Faithful to invoke and solicit the Blessings of Allh by His Names Q.07:180. Thus, as a
part of the social etiquette and mannerism the Muslims recite Bi-Ism-Allh, pronounced as Bismillh, meaning
With the Name of Allh before starting any work, worship, ceremony, social gathering, or taking meals/drinks, etc.
The Divine 99 are normally recited in a state of physical and spiritual purity as part of the Dzikr and making a plea
to Allh. Hence, the expression 'Y' appears as prefix to the Name; e.g. Y Allh, Y Ramn, etc. where 'Y' means
O' - as an address to the addressee. For purposes of pronunciation, see Transliteration Guide.
This book comprises three sections. Section 1 presents all the Single 99 Attributes as they appear in the Qurn and
adth literature. Section 2 presents those of The Attributes that appear in pairs The Composite Attributes. In both
sections the Names/Attributes are presented in Arabic with transliteration and pronunciation; references to
Surah:yah/Statement appear below each straight numbers express an explicit reference while italics represent an
implicit mention or a derivative from Arabic infinitive verbal noun/nomen verbi, etc. Meanings and Blessings of the
Names/Attributes, both spiritual and material, are also briefly stated. Section 3 presents a Glipmse of Images of
Divine Fragrance as it glows up in 49 yt.
Great care has been exercised in transliterating the Arabic Names/Attrinutes as also relating the Surah numbers with
those of yt/Statements. Nevertheless, it is quite probable that some inaccuracies may have crept in or I may have
overlooked a point. I should appreciate if such errors and omissions are advised to hashemibadr@gmail.com
The Divine 99 Names are in Arabic. These have been presented in this book as in their written form; not as in their
spoken form. The two forms have a subtle difference which has been taken care of by adding a sub-title of
pronunciation.
The spirit, the beauty, the eloquence, the depth and the comprehensiveness of these Arabic Divine 99 Names can
never be captured by any other language. Translations can be dull and convey the apparent meaning but remain
devoid of the true spirit and divine sanctity. Strongly mindful of these limitations and my intellectual inadequacies, I
have suggested a range of Approximate Meanings, and supplemented translations with extended wording by way of
paraphrasing wherever necessary.
I seek Allh Jella Jellluh's guidance to accomplish a faithful translation and transmission of His Holy Names and
Majestic Attributes embedded with true devotional spirit. May Jella Jellluh grant acceptance to this humble
endeavor dedicated with awe and humility to His Name. mn.

The Attribute of Rabb is particularly significant as it conveys the basic functional Divine Concept which
not only comprise the fostering, upbringing and nourishing His Creation but also regulating, completing,
accomplishing, sustaining and perfection of the existence of His Creation. It also means Originator of
things and their Combiner to create new forms. The lexicons of Arabic language speak of all of them, and
more, when they give the detailed meaning of the root Rabb.
It is open to discussion whether some or all of these epithets may be considered either to supplement or to
replace The 27 that do not directly appear in The Qurn. The additional identified Attributes have
been listed with reference to specific Srah:yah/yt in the later part of this Section, entitled The 99
Plus. While referencing to Srah:yah the first number denotes the Srah, the second number denotes
the yah; thus 02:02 would mean Second Sarh and Second yah.
The adjectives Al-Asm Al-Sift - used for portraying the Divine Attributes are not exclusive. There are
instances in The Qurn where these have also been used for non-divine purposes. Consider the Arabic
Expressions in red letters below where the whole yah has been reproduced for benefit of contextual
reference and comparison:
Case 1
Q.44:42 The Time of Judgment is the time appointed for all; the time when no fried can take
anothers place. No one shall receive any help except for those to whom Allh shows
mercy. He is Al-Azz (The Almighty), Al-Reim.
Q.44:49 The Tree of Zaqqm shall be the food for the sinners. Hot as molten metal, itboils in
their bellies, like seething water.Take him. Thrust him into the depths of Hell. Pour over
his head a torment of scalding water. Taste this, for you considered yourself Al-Azz (The
Mighty), Al-Kerm. (Al-Kerm is also a Divine Attribute)
Case 2
Q.02:105 Allh singles out for His mercy whoever He Will. Allhs Grace in most abundant
Allh-o Dzl-Fadhl-i Al-Azm.
Q.09:63 Do they not know that whoever over-steps the limit with Allh and His Messanger
for him awaits the Fire of Hell, abiding therein for ever? This is the greatest disgrace
dzlik-al Khizy Al-Azm.

Case 3
Q.87:01 Glorify The Name of your Rabb, The Exalted Rabb-o kum Al-Al.
Q.79:24 Go to Pharaoh for he has grown tyrant and has proclaimed: I am your Rabb, The
Exalted Rabb-o kum Al-Al.
Case 4
Q.02:225 Allh does not hold you to account for carelessness in pronouncing oaths, but He
holds you to account for what your hearts haveearned. Allh is All-Forgiving, alm - AllForbearing.
Q.11:87 They said: O Shoyeb, is it your mode of worship that commands you that we abandon
what our forefathers worshipped? Or are we to do with our wealth what we please? For you
are gentle Al-alm - and discerning Al-Reshd. (Al-Reshd is also a Divine Attribute)
The repeated variations of The Attributes throughout this book and the Qur'n is meant to stress the moral
odiousness and intellectual futility of attributing Divine Qualities to any entity, real or myth, other than
Allh The One God.

Section 2
The Composite Attributes
Half of the Divine Attributes marked in green in Section 1 appear in an equal number of Pairs like AlRemn Al-Rem, phrased here as Composite Attributes. These Attributes carry a pre-fix al to make a
common noun to a proper noun; notwithstanding that tenwn on a common noun also make it a proper
noun. Q.03:34 states an Attribute of Semun Almun, where un is tenwn; and Q.03:35 closes with AlSem Al-Alm, with al pre-fix, both conveying the same meaning. It could also be that similar verbs are
mutually related with similar nouns in a logical manner. This Section considers The Composite Attributes
that carry a pre-fix of al. The choice does not affect the purpose or implications.
It would be unusual for The Composite Attribute to appear in the beginning or middle of the yah as
Q.20:114; their appearance is usual at the closing of the yt. The Pairs repeat themselves 137 times in
various permutations and combinations. These occurrences are linked with each other like honey-comb
[Illustration below]. Within the Pairs, Al-Azz Al-ekm ranks highest with 27 occurrences, followed by
Al-Azz Al-Rem and Al-Sem Al-Alm with 13 for each, and so forth.

68
The repeated variations of The Composite and Single Attributes throughout the Qur'n and The
Composites in this Section is meant to stress the moral odiousness and intellectual futility of attributing
Divine Qualities to any entity, real or myth, other than Allh The One God.
Page | 69
69
Page | 70
70
This Section presents The Composite Attributes and restricts reference to one yah with relevant
translation and paraphrasing. Some of The Pairs portray the beauty of subtleness as is the case in Al-Azz
Al-Gheffr and Al-Azz Al-Ghefr; where Al-Azz is common to both Al-Gheffr and Al-Ghefr which
have a common root (together with Al-Ghfir) but with variance in meanings that have been captured as
The All-Forgiving and The Oft-Forgiver.
The Single Attributes which are not considered in the Conventional 99, like, among others, Al-Khell q
and Shkir have not been included in this Section while each pairs with Al-Alm in Q.36:81 and
Q.02:158 respectively.

Section 3
Glimpses of The Majestic Image
The Divine Attribute of Al-Wadd mentioned in Section1 is articulately balanced by its counterpoint in
Q.05:54, depicting Divine Love answered by human love: He loves them as they love him. A number of
the yt declare stereotypically that Allh loves those:
o
o
o
o
o
corruption Q02:205;
the evildoers Q.03:57;
the aggressors Q.02:190;
the disbelievers Q.02:276; 03:32; etc.
These Divine Images are woven into the yt but are not considered in The Conventional 99. Thus, this
Section identifies the yt as they appear in progressive sequence with Divine Fragrance of these
Majestic Images with necessary translation and paraphrasing for textual context. In certain cases, an yah
preceding or following the yah in quotation has been added to complete the message.
Page | 81
81
The following list is only indicative of The Glimpses. It is an exercise to suggest leads for further work
that may be undertaken in parallel/together with The 99 Plus Section 1 to make both templates
complete and authoritative.
02:190 Fight in The Cause of Allh only those who fight you; while doing so do not commit
war crimes, excesses and aggression. For Allh does not like the aggressors.
02:195 - In order to support defense measures, spend your wealth generously in upholding the
Cause of Allh. By not doing so, do not cast yourselves into destruction with your own
hands. Surely Allh loves those who are generous and devoted to doing good.
02:205 There are some who speak of the present life only in a manner that pleases you. He even
calls upon Allh to witness what is in his heart, while being the staunchest of
opponents. But when he departs, he sets out to spread corruption in the land, destroying
the cultivation and livestock. Indeed, Allh does not like corruption.
02:222 - And they ask you about the wife-husband cohabitation during her menses period. Tell
them: It is a painful condition for her. So keep away from your wives during their
menstruation. And do not approach them until they have cleansed. Once they have
cleansed themselves, you may then approach them for cohabitation as Allh has
enjoined upon you. Surely, Allh loves those who turn to Him in repentance if they
have over-stepped these limits. And He also loves those spouses who keep themselves
ritually clean.
02:255 Allh. There is no entity and can never be worthy of worship but He. The Ever-Living;
The Self-Subsisting. Slumber does not overwhelm Him, and so does not the sleep.
02:255 His Throne of Almightiness encompasses the heavens and the earth. And their upholding
does not make Him weary or tired.
02:276 Allh has made commerce lawful and usury rib unlawful. So whoever, on
receiving Allhs warning, stops taking rib, may keep his previous profit, and his
affais is up to Allh. But he who relapses shall be an inhabitant of the Fire, there to
remain forever. Allh annuls rib and augments charitable spending - sadaqt. And
Allh does not like any impious lawbreaker.
02:286 Allh does not burden any soul with more than it is able to bear. To its credit belongs
what it has earned: upon it falls the burden of what it has deserved.
03:05 - Indeed, nothing on the earth and in the heavens is hidden from Allh. It is He Who gives
you shape in wombs of your mothers in any manner He please.
03:09 Our Rabb, You are the Gatherer of humankind at a Time about which there is absolutely
no doubt.
Indeed, Allh never fails to fulfill His Promise.
03:32 - Say: Obey Allh and His Messenger Muhammad.
If they turn away, Allh does not like the disbeliever.
03:57 - As for those who believe and do deeds of righteousness, He shall reward them in full.
But Allh does not like the evildoers.
03:76 - Whoever fulfills ones pledge and fears Allhs disobedience, Allh loves the Allhrevering, pious.
03:134 - As for those men and women who spend their wealth both in times of properity and in
hardship, who restrain their anger even when they are provoked and are in a position to
retaliate, who pardon peoples offences, Allh love all those who are thus devoted to
doing good.
03:146 - And how many a Prophet had to fight in the Cause of Allh along with numerous men
of virtue and knowledge, but they did not weaken because of what afflicted them in the
Cause of Allh, nor became faint-hearted or helpless before the enemy. Allh loves the
patient and steadfast.
The Divine 99 Researched and Explained by Badr Hashemi

03:159 - So forgive them and ask for Allhs pardon for them.
And consult with them in all matters.
Then once you have decided on a course of action, put your trust in Allh, for Allh
loves those who put their trust in Him.
03:182 Allh has certainly heard the words of those who say: Allh is poor while we are rich.
We shall record what they say, as well as assassination of their Prophets unjustly, and
We shall say to the: Taste the torment of the scorching fire. This is on account of your
past deeds. Otherwise Allh is never unjust to His servants.
04:36 Worship Allh The One God. Ascribe no one with Him in divinity, worship and
command.
Be good to your parents, as also to the relatives, and to the orphans, and to the needy,
and to a neighbor who is a relative, and to a neighbor who is a stranger, and to a
companion by your side, and to a tarveller, and to those whom you acquire in the qitl,
and to your servants. Allh does not like the arrogant and the self-conceit who act in a
boastful manner.
04:48 Indeed, Allh does not forgive the ascribing of divinity to any entity besides Him, but
anything lesser than this He forgives to whoever He pleases.
06:14 - Say: Am I to take someone other than Allh as Rabb; He Who created the heavens and
the earth? It is He who provides nourishment to all, but Himself needs none.
06:103 Allh is your Rabb. There is no entity worthy of worship but He, Creator of all things;
so worship Him. He is Guardian over all things. No mortal power of sight/spiritual
vision can ever encompass Him, whereas He grasps sight/spiritual vision of all, i.e.
Allh is above all visual comprehension.
06:141 It is He Who created gardens, trellised and non-trellised, and palms and plants of
diverse fruits, and olives and pomegranates, like and unlike.
Eat of its fruit when ripe, and deliver up its due to the workers the day it is harvested.
Do not be wasteful for He does not like the wasteful.
08:58 If you fear treachery from a group, renounce your compact with them on equal terms for
all, for Allh does not like the treacherous.
09:96 They swear to you to forgive them but even if you do, Allh shall never forgive the
iniquitous people.
11:115 Good deeds efface bad deeds. This is a Remembrance for those who remember.
Bear with patience. Allh does not neglect the reward of those who do good.
12:52 Yusuf/Joseph said: This was for my master to know that I did not betray him behind his
back, for Allh does not guide the mischief of those who betray.
16:23 Your Allh is The One Allh. As for those men and women who deny the Life After
Life, their hearts refuse to admit the Truth and they are arrogant. There is no doubt that
Allh knows what they conceal in their hearts and what they reveal in the open. He
does not like the arrogant.
17:111 Say: All Praise is for Allh Who took no child to Himself, and has no partner in His
dominion, worship and command.
17:111 He has no weakness and therefore does not need any support from anyone.
20:52 Pharaoh quizzed Moses: Who is your Rabb, O Moses?
Moses responded: Our Rabb is He Who gave each thing its likeness in form, and then
guided it.
Pharaoh questioned: What of earlier ages or former generations?
Moses answered: My Rabb had knowledge of them, all in a Book of Record. My Rabb
does not err, and does not forget.
21:23 Had there been many entities for worship, instead of Allh, in the heavens and the earth,
they would have been corrupted. Exalted is Allh, Rabb of the Throne, far above what

they allege against Him. He cannot be questioned about whatever He does, whereas it
is they who shall be questioned.
Allh shall defend the Faithful; Allh does not like the unfaithful and the ungrateful.
Establish the Prayers in conformity with its conditions, and pay out Zakt, and hold fast
to Allh; He is your Maul Lord Protector; an excellent Maul, and an excellent
Guardian.
Say: Who holds the absolute dominion over all things in His Hand? And who is it that
protects, while there is no protection against Him? Tell me if you know so much? And
they shall respond: Allh- 23:89.
Allh has neither had a son/child; nor there is an entity worthy of worship besides Him;
if there were, each entity would have taken its creation aside and tried to overpower
the other. Allh is exalted far above what they allege against Him.
Qrn/Korah was one of Moses people, an Israelite, but he betrayed them by being a
corroborator to their oppression. We had granted him such great treasures that even
their keys were too heavy a burden for a group of strong men to carry. Even his people
warned him: Do not exult in your riches. Surely Allh does not like those who exult.
Do not seek to spread corruption and mischief in the land, for Allh does not like the
spreaders of corruption and mischief.
Out of His Bounty He shall reward those men and women who believe in His Unity
and the Life After Life, and do deeds of righteousness. Certainly He does not like the
disbelievers.
O The Faithful!
Do not enter the Prophets houses for a meal unless you have been formally invited
and given the permission, do not linger until a meal is ready.
When you are invited, go in; then, when you have taken your meal, leave.
Do not stay on and talk, for that causes inconvenience to the Prophet, and he is shy of
asking you to leave. But Allh does not shy away from teaching you the right
manners.
Not even an atoms weight of whatever there is in the heavens and/or on the earth
escapes Him, i.e. His knowledge; and neither there is anything smaller than that, or
greater, but is noted in a Clear Book of Record.
If you show ingratitude by disbelieving in His Existance and Unity, Allh is not in need
of your belief and support; yet He is not pleased with ingratitude and disbelief of His
servants; whereas if you show gratitude by believing in Him, He is pleased with it
from you.
Allh is the Creator of the heavens and the earth each with its particular features and
functions.
He has made for you, from yourselves, mates, and from the animals mates of their
own kind.
Thus He multiplies you and the cattle.
But nothing whatsoever is there and can never be like Him.
He is The All-Listening; The All-Watching.
Let harm be requited by an equal harm;
but whoever forgives and makes reconciliation will have his reward from Allh
himself.
Surely He does not like the wrongdoers.
And My Word cannot be changed, and I am not unjust to My servants.
Have they then never considered the birds above them, spreading their wings and
closing them in?
None holds them up except The All-Merciful.
