Janes Personal Professional Learning Plan

Purpose of PPLP:
The purpose of this Personal Professional Learning Plan (PPLP) is to set long-term and
short-term goals with actionable items from now until through the first year within my desired
profession.
Janes long-term Goal:
In the activity from lesson 1, I determined my long-term goal as being an early childhood
educator, from birth to kindergarten. This age group is critical and sets the platform for the rest of
the childs learning. Upon graduation, I plan on working in a corporate childcare facility to learn
the daily processes and operations. From there, I plan on taking what I like and tweaking what I
did not like and then create my own childcare facility that serves to foster the whole child. By
focusing on the whole child, I will be focusing on their physical, cognitive, social, and emotional
needs. I want to have a balance between indoor and outdoor learning and want to put a big
emphasis on creativity and self-expression. I grew up and currently reside in the Bay Area,
California and plan on finding a job opportunity within the San Francisco area.
Janes Short-term Goal:
I graduate in May, 2017 and do not plan on searching for a job until Fall 2017. Until I am
in my desired profession, I want to do as much as possible to prepare myself for what lies ahead.
I plan on completing all required certification programs for me to be eligible for the position that
I wish to have. I also continue my education in subjects that interest me that I wish to teach to
children.
Measurable Actionable Items:

For all positions in my desired career, the minimum requirement is a high school
diploma. However, most positions require completion of certification programs. In
California, in order for me to be able to teach a class in multiple subjects, I will need to
complete a Multiple Teaching Subject Credential which is valid for 5 years upon
completion.
According to the State of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, there are
eight requirements to complete the Multiple Teaching Subject Credential and they are:
1) complete a baccalaureate degree or higher from a college or university, 2) satisfy the
Basic Skills Requirement, 3) complete a multiple subject teacher preparation program,
4) complete a commission-approved elementary subject-matter program, 5) pass the
Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA), 6) satisfy the Developing English
Language Skills, 7) Complete a course on the principles of the U.S. Constitution, and 8)
Complete a foundational computer technology course.
o Of the either needed requirements, I will need to complete requirements 2, 3, 4, 5,
and 6. These classes should not take more than two months to complete.

I want to incorporate outdoor learning into my teaching so I will take a class on edible
gardening.
I will look into internship programs to see if any are suited for me and my interests.
Effective immediately, I will update my Facebook page and include professional
information.
Effectively immediately, I will update my LinkedIn account and make connections with
my peers and others in my desired profession.

Behavioral Changes:
In terms of behavioral changes, I will need to do a better job of seeking help when
needed. Sometimes I am too proud to ask for help. If this occurs as an educator, my quality of
work suffers and in the end, my students will bear the consequences. I excel in planning and will
need to use that as motivation to do and learn more. For me, if something is written in a list, it
will get done. I will need to use this PPLP as a strict guide and checklist to ensure I am staying
motivated and completing tasks on schedule. Because being an educator with several children in
my care, it will be a very new role for me. I will need to really need to check in with my peers,
mentors, and superiors and ask what I am doing well and what I can be doing better. I will see if
they have 360-performance reviews and if not, ask if they would be willing to employ one. This
way, I will have concrete ways to monitor and evaluated my performance and continue to
improve.
Skills to Attain:
One area I wish to expand on is my developmental network. I have a great support
system, but within my current job. In my future profession, I will really need to work on
acquiring a network that can support me (as well as me reciprocate) in my educational
profession. Sometimes it can be difficult for me to initiate a conversation and network so this
will be a big, but excellent challenge for me. I feel I have a good understanding of the 21st
century skills discussed in this course. However, I will like to expand on my understanding of
health literacy in terms of children.
Other Tasks I wish to Complete:
In addition to the courses needed to qualify to become an educator, I would like to take a
class or workshop on environmental education for children. Using the knowledge gained from
this class, I will like to incorporate it into a sample lesson plan. I will also like to look into
volunteer opportunities in my area to potentially take my future students to. For example,
community gardens or a farm. Not only will these opportunities be great for children to
demonstrate selflessness, but they will also provide great outdoor learning opportunities.

Below is a chart to show actionable items to help my personal and

professional growth.

In the next several months

(January-May 2017)
Beginning in January, I will complie a list of employment opportunities that interest me. Some
corporations I have already looked into and interests me are Google, Bayer, Chevron, and Bright
Horizons.
Of these potential employers, I will see what the job requires of me- certifications, degrees,
experience, etc.
I will see what courses are available online and/or within my community that will address the needed
certifications, courses, etc.
Look into early childhood endorsements such as a ZS to be able to teach children between the ages of
birth and 8 years old.
Look into nearby Master's programs.
Prepare my portfolio to be presentable at job interviews.
Graduate from Arizona State University!
May-August 2017
Upon graduation, I can further update my portfolio and resume. This includes a cover letter, resume, list
of extracurricular involvement, official transcripts, reference letters, and subject test scores and
credentials.
I will take skill assessments to see where my strengths and weaknesses lie.
I will network via LinkedIn and peers who are already educators. I will ask for support through
suggestions, feedback, and shadowing. One friend of mine teaches kindergarten and has already given me
permission to assist her class when I am ready and able. I will take her up on that offer for May-June.
I will take the summer to complete the Multiple Teaching Subject Credential, including the RICA and ZS
endorsement.
Plan sample lesson plans that are in line with my educational beliefs in fostering the whole child through
indoor and outdoor education.
I will have practice job interviews with peers already in the profession.
I will volunteer at daycare facilities such as St. Mark's Nursery School in Orinda, CA and The Old
Firehouse School in Lafayette, CA.
September-December
2017
I will further update my resume with any other additional information.
I will apply for job positions that interest me and go on interviews.
Remain positive and see every experience as a learning opportunity. If I am not offered a job position, ask
why that was what advice they could give me. I would also ask that they think of me the next time a
position opens up.
January 2018
By this point, I anticipate being in a position in my chosen career. I see myself working along side a team
of like-minded individuals in a corporate daycare facility catering to children between the ages of birthkindergarten.
I will learn from my peers and continually ask questions for clarification. I will keep a journal with me
and at some point every day, jot down the highs and lows of the day, and processes I felt were useful and
not useful.
I will stay current on different studies and methods of learning. I will do this by subscribing to Taylor &
Francis Online which delves into all aspects of teaching and learning.
Continue educational learning and credentials. Minimum hours required for a full-time educator: 25
hours. Can be in the form of formal courses, workshops, conferences, seminars, lectures.
