Research Report for BBA Business Research

December 01, 2016
Bangladesh is a poor country having lots of potentiality in various sectors. Tourism is one of his
potential sectors but it is still unexplored by the decision maker or relevant agency. Her tourist
attractions include archeological sites, historic mosques and monuments, resorts, beaches, picnic
spots, forest and wildlife. Bangladesh is a riverine country having attractive panoramic beauty.
There are hills, vales, deep and mangrove forests, rivers and the longest beach in the world. In
this country, the scope of nature based tourism, research based tourism, culture based tourism,
and eco-tourism is quite evident (Shamsuddoha M, 2004).Many developing countries have

prepared plans particularly at the central level to guide tourism development, as they have
recognized the tourism sector as an important source of foreign currency earning and
employment (Cevat Tosun and Dallen J. Timothy, 2001). Bangladesh needs to come out to be
several defects in the planning approaches to tourism development.

1.2 Problem Statement:

In this descriptive and investigative study, A survey will be conducted among the tourist of other
countries about the various issues towards tourism development & analysis their opinion to find
out the way of improving tourism industry for attracting more tourist.
1.3 Rationale of study:
In Bangladesh, government is sufferings from earning source to generate more revenue for the
smooth mobility of the country. Tourism is one of the sectors; he can manage more earnings from
this sector if this sector would be unorganized to organize. Bangladesh is trying to develop its
tourism industry to compete in local and global market. Bangladesh needs to develop its tourism
industry for local tourists as well as foreign tourist. In Bangladesh, tourism has lot of potentiality
to earn more revenue than presently what they are earning. If Governmental agency, private
organizations and multinational agency come forward and take the responsibility for developing
tourism industry, it will earn much more returns and generate lots of employment as well. There
has no plethora research work on tourism industry in Bangladesh perspectives. This research will
add some value and fill up the gap that motivated the authors to undertake such a study.

2.2 Review of Literature:
Tourism plays an important role in the economic, cultural, social and industrial development of
any nation, tourism sector has not received due consideration for the researchers in the past.
However at present various research institutes, universities and researchers give importance to
this sector and publish many literature on tourism which enhance the knowledge of future
researchers. To study the literature on tourism many publish literature on tourism is cover under
different heads such as literature on international tourism, literature on tourism in Bangladesh.
Mr. A. R. Rhodes, conduct a study on Institutional Arrangements Study of the Recreation and
Tourism Management on Protected Natural Areas of New Zealand and Mexico, for his Ph. D.
degree from Lincoln University, New Zealand, 2005. The main aim of his research is to compare
the institutional arrangement of both countries New Zealand and Mexico and suggest experience
lessons from New Zealand which can be applied to Mexican contest. This study suggests the
management strategies and practices applied to management issues like administrative structures,
policies, customs and management techniques. This research conclude that New Zealand provide
valuable information with regard to tourism and recreation management to present institutional
arrangement of Mexico. Thus major findings of this study are that Mexico get international
experiences and improve. Its capability for better handling the growing development of tourism
and recreation in its protected natural area system.
Bahareh Pourafkari written a master thesis on A Comparative Study on Cultural Tourism
Development in Iran and Turkey submitted to Lulea University of Technology, Iran, 2007. This
research evaluates Irans potential in the tourism industry and especially cultural tourism
development and tries to compare it with Turkey because of their regional proximities and
similarities in culture, attractions and religion. The problem identifies during this research is that
there is a lack of promotion, training and funds for the development of cultural tourism. The
suggestion made for this problems are that the government allocate more funds for safeguarding
of cultural heritage as well as establishing the research centers for cultural and heritage studies.
Researcher also suggests that proper training and recreation programmer arrange for tourist guide
and youth for increasing cultural and heritage tourism. The main conclusion made in this
research is that both countries have the same resources with similar culture and tradition,
however Turkey give more importance on highlighting some ancient tradition and arrange.
Sze Ming conducts a study on Forces Shaping the Trends and Patterns of Chinas Outbound
International Tourist Flows for his Ph. D. degree from Southern Cross University, Lismore,
NSW, 2009. This study concerns how outbound tourists flow from China. This study used to
identify the similarities and difference in policy and international tourist flow patterns in Japan,
Taiwan and Korea and provide a benchmark for studying Chinas outbound tourism. This study
identifies different forces in, macro environment which affect Chinas outbound tourism namely

demographic, economic, natural, political and competitive. This study identifies major
challenges such as lack of consumer protection, widening income gap and wealth disparity
among social groups are major considerations for the government, imposition of new regulation
and control measures by government. Researcher suggest many areas for outbound tourist flow
in China such as market driven economy and state control are the two main forces promoting and
checking the outbound international tourist flow from China, therefore more emphasis given to
these two variables.
Maeta Chumni conducts a research work on Tourism Demand Model: Determinants of
Thailands International Tourist Receipts for Ph. D. degree from Chulalongkom University,
Thailand, 2001. This study aims to identify and examine some major determinants affecting the
demand for Thailands international tourist receipts and also examines the situation and statistics
of Thailand tourism industry. For this study researcher selected five counties viz. Australia,
Japan, UK, Malaysia and USA which generates demand for Thailands tourist receipts. The
major findings of the research are that world.

2.3 Chapter Summary:

From the review of literature I have known that how we can improve our tourism industry .
Which may influence the foreign tourist to visit our country and what are the consequences of
that?
Chapter Three: Methodology
3.0 Introduction:
In every research, methodology needs to be clearly explained for better understanding of the
readers. Methodology is the systematic, theoretical analysis of the methods applied to a field of
study. Research methodology has been selected which is suitable for this research.

3.1 Methodology Approach:

Mixed methods have been used for this research that means Primary data collection and
Secondary data collection both methods.
Primary data collected by doing survey among the foreigner tourists and interview with the
chairman man & directors of porjoton corporation. In this survey, some question were asked
about development of tourism and their opinion.

Secondary data have been collected from internet specifically from website of tourism of our
country, some online research paper.

3.2 Sampling:
Sampling is a method of studying from a few selected items, instead of the entire big number of
units.
Sample: A sample is a set of observation drawn from a population. Its denoted by n.
Population: The total set of observations that can be made is called the population. Its denoted
by N.
3.3 Sample and Sample sizes of this Research:
Sample of my research was some foreign tourist and also local tourist . Sample size was 40
among of them 20 was local tourist and 20 was foreign tourist from different country.

3.4 Sampling strategies are divided into two main groups:

12 | Page

f.

Convenience Sampling
Voluntary Sampling
Purposive Sampling
Snowball Sampling
Event Sampling
Time Sampling
3.5 Sampling method of research:
Stratified Sampling method: I have been used stratified sampling method for sampling of my
research.
Stratified Sampling means sampling within particular sections of the target groups. I have used it
because I could easily analyze my target groups (local tourist and foreign tourist) by using that
method.
3.6 Advantages and Disadvantages of Sampling Method:
Advantages of Sampling Method:

Sampling method is cheaper to collect data from a part of the whole population.
Sampling gives more time to researcher for data collection, so it is quickly and has a lot of time
for collection of information.
It provides detail and comprehensive information.
13 | Page

Research Report for BBA Business Research

December 01, 2016
Sampling is the only practical method when the population is infinite.
It is much easier to collect information from many individuals in universe.
Disadvantages of Sampling Method:
Carefully sampling selection is difficult.
Experts are required for careful study of the universe.
If the information is required for each and every unit in the study, then it is difficult to interview
each and every person in sampling method.

3.7 Data Collection Method:

In this research, Qualitative and Quantitative methods both have been used for collecting data.
Qualitative Method: Qualitative method is more subjective using different methods of
collecting data through interviews and focus groups.
By using qualitative method, interviews have to do among local tourist and the foreign tourist
about the condition of tourism industry of our country and how to develop our tourism industry.
Quantitative Method: Quantitative method of data collection involves determining a large
number of respondents and the data collected by carrying out surveys is calculated and analyzed
by statistical methods and tools to achieve the final results.
By using quantitative method, researcher have been analyzed various report which is related with
my study. Researcher has analyzed development of tourism industry research paper Tourism
industry of Bangladesh.

3.8 Survey technique of this Research:

unstructured survey techniques have been followed in my research. Unstructured survey are
casual debate where the participants directly wants to discover the in-depth of particular topic
with another person in unstructured way.

3.9 Chapter Summary:
This chapter has provided different tools and techniques, research approaches and also the
methodology that are used in this research. This chapter also provided different types of
sampling method.

Chapter Four: Data Collection

4.0 Introduction:
In this chapter, research will discuss about how researcher have been collected data which help
me to complete the study. Researcher gathered data through the interviews and the statistical
data from the websites and as well as other research paper those are related to my study.
4.1 Survey:
There are a lot of ways to conduct research and collect information, but one way that makes it
really easy is by doing a survey. A survey is defined as a brief interview or discussion with
individuals about a specific topic. The term survey is, unfortunately, a little vague, so we need to
define it better. The term survey is often used to mean 'collect information.' For instance, you
may imagine a researcher or a television scientist saying, 'We need to do a survey!' (I know,
riveting television).
Survey questions can be divided into two broad types:

structured survey : A structured survey (also known as a standardized survey or a

researcher-administered survey) is a quantitative research method commonly employed
in survey research. The aim of this approach is to ensure that each survey interview is
presented with exactly the same questions in the same order.
unstructured survey : An unstructured survey is an survey in which there is no specific
set of predetermined questions, although the interviewer usually has certain topics in
mind that they wish to cover during the interview. Unstructured surveys flow like an
everyday conversation and tend to be more informal and open-ended.
15 | Page

Research Report for BBA Business Research

December 01, 2016

4.2 Survey technique of this Research:

The researcher has followed unstructured survey techniques in this research. Unstructured
surveys are informal discussions where the interviewer wants to explore in-depth a particular
topic with another person in spontaneous way.
Research Question Design:
Research questions are a designed as a form on inquiry for a concerned issue, which is defined at
the first stage in a research project. To investigate and evaluate the research questions it is
required to carry out a survey which involves collecting data. survey method is one of the data
collecting methods as part of the qualitative method.
Survey questions are designed and formulated with the idea of that those are to be related to the
research topic.
4.3 Primary Data collection Process:
Primary data collection has benefits as it provides an opportunity to know better what the
researcher is expecting.
Method of primary data collection depends upon the type of research being undertaken. There
are mainly three methods of conducting a primary survey which are:
Survey method
Interview method
Observation method
From those methods, Researcher has been used interview & survey method for my research.
SURVEY RESPONDENTS:

16 | Page

December 01, 2016
To acquire the desired results, a strategic approach has been taken by the researcher. It has been
possible to identify the relevant people who are actively involved in this process. The
participants represent the different countries tourist.

RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS:
As part of the research study, the researcher has taken interviews of different segments consists
of chairman and director of porjoton corporation. From chapter 3, for the method of qualitative
data analysis an inductive approach has been adopted which include the content analysis and the
narrative analysis as part of the research effort.
4.4 Ethical Consideration:
As part of a research study ethical issues need to be considered. According to the CIRT (Center
for Innovation In Research and Teaching), Ethical considerations in research are critical. Ethics
are the norms or standards for conduct that distinguish between right and wrong. They help to
determine the difference between acceptable and unacceptable behaviors. Ethical standards
prevent against the fabrication or falsifying of data and therefore, promote the pursuit of
knowledge and truth which is the primary goal of research. This is especially important when
considering issues related to data sharing, co-authorship, copyright guidelines, confidentiality,
and many other issues. Researchers must also adhere to ethical standards in order for the public
to support and believe in the research. The public wants to be assured that researchers followed
the appropriate guidelines for issues such as human rights, animal welfare, compliance with the
law, conflicts of interest, safety, health standards and so on. Ethical considerations ensure that
the research is conducted smoothly and efficiently to achieve the desired results.
4.5 Chapter Summary:
This chapter has provided an overall understanding of the different Survey methods, Primary
data collection approaches and also the Survey participants that are to be used in this research.
Chapter Five: Data Analysis & Finding
5.0 Introduction:

17 | Page

Research Report for BBA Business Research

December 01, 2016
The data will be presented after a further analysis of the gathered data through the interviews and
the statistical data from the websites of Bangladesh porjoton Corporation and different research
paper those are related to my study.
5.1 Finding :
The importance of tourism sector has increased overtime. In 2009-2010, 838 was allocated for
tourism sector from national budget. This has been increased to 1818 in 2011-2012. However,
lately there is a decreasing trend in tourism expenditure. In 2013-2014, tourism expenditure in
national budget has been falling to 683. This decreasing trend may be due to the current political
crisis, which has discouraged tourism in Bangladesh.

Figure 1: Distribution of money at the tourism sector in the national budget (source: Bangladesh
Parjatan Corporation)
In Bangladesh, government controlled tourism organization Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation
(BPC) is doing well in terms of profit. In 2008-2009 it lost about 194 lakh taka. However, since
then it is making profit. In 2009-2010, the profit was 23.41 lakh taka which has consistently
increased to 612.33 lakh taka in 2012-2013. This profit has accompanied by both increasing total
income and total expenditure. This total income and total expenditure in 2008-2009 were 3598.6
and 3792.35 lakh taka respectively. These figures have risen to 7168.33 lakh taka and 6556 lakh
taka respectively in 2012-2013.The number of tourist that came to Bangladesh during 2008 to
2012 are shown in Figure 2: The inbound tourism severely fall to 267,107 in 2009 from the
previous year 467,332. This may be due to the global financial crisis. The number of tourist,
however, show increasing trend after 2009. The inbound tourism has recovered to 303,386 in
2010 and has increased to 588,193 in 2012.

6.0 Introduction:

19 | Page

Research Report for BBA Business Research

December 01, 2016
This final chapter of the report covers the conclusion and suggestions of this research. This
chapter concentrates on giving some Suggestions according to the findings of this study.
6.1 Suggestions:
Following measures are necessary for the development of tourism sector in Bangladesh:
1.
2.
3.

Up-date the present tourism policies in Bangladesh compare to the world tourism market.
Tourism spot and related organization should run by the private sector.
Tourism related discipline like hotel and tourism management should be start at the all
university in Bangladesh.
4.
Infrastructures around the tourism sector should be built and maintained. Rail connection
between Coxs Bazaar and Chittagong is necessary. Because, present communication system
is not enough for tourist attraction.
5.
Political stability should be maintained to attract the foreign tourist.
6.
Government should take the actions about the security system at the tourist place.

6.2 Further Research:

The research has some limitations in terms of scope and resources, further research can be
carried out in the future. The research focused on the way of improving tourism industry for
attracting more tourists.
The research also focused on how Bangladesh Porjoton Corporation can short out their limitation
to fulfill their goal.

6.3 Conclusion:

20 | Page

Research Report for BBA Business Research

December 01, 2016
This was not at all an easy project to complete. Gathering information was also a difficult task.
Whatever the limitations were, the researcher tried to make best effort to overcome the
limitations.
It is possible to sketch some wide -ranging conclusions that take the figure of policy
recommendations and a set of related lessons for why modern planning approaches to tourism
development have not been implemented and why these defects in planning approaches to
tourism development have emerged in Bangladesh.
First , current defects in planning approaches to tourism development are an extension of
prevailing shortcomings of public administration systems, political cultures, over-politicized
states, and lack of developmental approaches to national development. That is to say, the roots of
an ill-planned approach to tourism development are a reflection of the existing sophisticated
socio-political and economic system that shaped planning approaches to tourism development.
As Tosun and Jenkins (1998, p. 111) argued: The choice of approach to planning assignments
will be conditioned by many factors. Perhaps the predominant factors will be related to the stage
of political and economic development in the particular country. Tourism planning team or the
national planning organization cannot develop and implement a better planning approach to
tourism development themselves unless some desirable changes in this macro system take place.
This may mirror the popular assertion that tourism does not bring development, rather
development brings tourism.
Second, political instability appears to be one of the main obstacles to implementation
of continuous planning activity and consistency of tourism policy. There are too many
bureaucratic old approach to planning has been replaced with a new approach to planning, which
is called the contemporary approach that involves flexible, continuous, comprehensive,
integrative, participatory and system planning models. These components of the contemporary
approach are not necessarily exclusive; rather they overlap each other. Therefore, Bangladesh
should develop an appropriate method of planning by using the right promotional mix and
proportion of components of the contemporary approach, taking into account their own
circumstances.
Finally, the efficiency and effectiveness of contemporary approaches to tourism planning largely
