Lesson Plan Title: Perform arithmetic operations on polynomials (Multiplying

Polynomials)
Grade Level

9th grade (Algebra 1)

Subject/Content

Mathematics (Algebra: Arithmetic with Polynomials & Rational

Expressions)

Standard
number/description

MAFS.912.A-APR.1
Using multiplication, addition, subtraction, and division in
order to solve for, and understand, polynomials and rational
expressions.

Strand/Cluster

Cluster 1

Objective:
What are you teaching?

Big Idea:
The learner will:

Through PowerPoint explanations and examples, there will be

a gained understanding on how to multiply polynomials
correctly, and order them according to power of the
exponents.
The learner will comprehend how to multiply polynomials in
review of multiplying exponents and will know how to order
them from largest to smallest.

Required Materials:
Paper colored puzzle pieces
Paper with polynomial examples
Projector and Screen (SMART Board)
White Board and Markers
Accommodation papers
Step-By-Step Plan:
1. Hook using projector
2. Intro into the lesson using SMART Notebook
3. Review key concepts of multiplying exponents
4. Tie into key concepts of multiplying polynomials (FOIL)
5. Do 4 examples to help students grasp understanding using SMART Board
6. Allow groups to work together to complete 3-5 problems
7. Go over answers to the 3-5 problems
8. Allow students time to work on homework

Assessment/Evaluation:

My assessment will be formative so that I can help students better understand these concepts since it is important for
higher math levels. I will know that students have mastered the material when the average score on three quizzes is
over 85%. If students are having trouble understanding material, I will ask them to come to one of my study sessions,
or I will try to help them by going over homework and quiz problems after each student has taken it.

Specific Accommodations: For students with ADHD I will make the slides have
less distractions on them during the PowerPoint. I will also allow students to be
involved in the discussion, so that student participation increases. Another
accommodation will be spending less time on each part of the lesson so that
activities move at a quick pace, and stay focused on the lesson. I will also provide
an outline of the notes, so that they have a reference sheet for problems later in
the lesson.
Commentary/Notes
Remember to allow students time to ask questions because polynomials are hard to
understand. Also, sing FOIL so that students have the jingle stuck in their head.
