I. This miracle shows Jesus love for His friends.
A. Jesus loved Mary, Martha and Lazarus (v. 1-5).
B. His love did not shield them entirely from the sorrows of life (v. 617).
Verse 15 says He was glad Lazarus died. There were other
purposes that He wished to accomplish through Lazarus
death.
C. His love led Him to speak about the next life (v. 18-32).
Jesus turned their thoughts from what He could have done to what
He will do.
II. This miracle shows Jesus power over death.
A. Jesus claimed to be the resurrection and the life (v. 25).
There are 3 important truths:
1. The power of resurrection is in His hand.
2. The prerogative of life is in His hand.
3. Physical death does not void spiritual life.
B. Jesus commanded physical life back into Lazarus (v. 33-45).
III. This miracle pre-figures Jesus death and resurrection.
His own death and resurrection were far more important:
A. Raising Lazarus was a temporary thing; the resurrection is
permanent.
B. His resurrection authenticated His ministry (Rom 1:4).
C. The resurrection is crucial to the gospel and our salvation
(Rom 10:9-10).
On the basis of Easter, human destinies are decided.
Jesus is still working miracles today the new birth.
