The Sound of Thunder Response

In The Sound of Thunder, one of the time traveling hunters steps on a butterfly and soon realizes that a disturbance in nature can have
serious consequences. The destruction of one part of an ecosystem can have a large impact on the future of that ecosystem. This effect
is called the Butterfly Effect. Humans impact ecosystems in different ways that can have a positive or negative effect. Choose one of
the topics of today below and write two paragraphs about how this topic will affect tomorrow.
Topic of today:
1. More oil is pumped to lower the price of gas.
2. A wooded area is cleared to make room for farmland.
3. A new landfill opens in your neighbourhood.
4. A carbon tax is implemented on all petroleum products.

Description

4-Excellent

3-Satisfactory

2-Limited

1-Poor

Describes the relationship

between knowing,
deciding and taking action
and how these factors
affect ecosystems.

The response
insightfully evaluates
the relationship between
knowing, deciding, and
taking action; response is
specific and states how
these factors affect an
ecosystem
The response
convincingly
connects intended and
unintended consequences
of human activities with
the story and specifically
states how these factors
affect an ecosystem

The response
thoughtfully describes
the relationship between
knowing, deciding, and
taking action; response
logically states how
these factors affect an
ecosystem
The response logically
connects intended and
unintended consequences
of human activities with
the story and literally
states how these factors
affect an ecosystem

The response somewhat

identifies the relationship
between knowing,
deciding, and taking
action; response
generally states how
these factors affect an
ecosystem
The response loosely
identifies intended and
unintended consequences
of human activities with
the story and
simplistically states how
these factors affect an
ecosystem

The response does not

identify the relationship
between knowing,
deciding, and taking
action; response is
irrelevant and does not
states how these factors
affect an ecosystem
The response is
unrelated to intended
and unintended
consequences of human
activities with the story
and does not states how
these factors affect an
ecosystem

The response
perceptively supports an
intervention and action
plan to deal with an
environmental concern

The response
appropriately supports
an intervention and action
plan to deal with an
environmental concern

The response vaguely

supports an intervention
or action plan to deal with
an environmental concern

The response is of
questionable relevance
and does not support an
intervention or action plan
to deal with an
environmental concern

Identifies intended and

unintended consequences
of human activities within
an ecosystem.

Analyzes an
environmental concern
within an ecosystem and
identifies potential
interventions or actions to
be taken.
