Detailed Lesson Preparation Guide

Elementary Education
Name: Margaret Coleman
Title: A Citizen goes Camping
Grade: Kindergarten
Concept/Topic: Citizenship
Time Needed: 30-40 minutes

Note: A detailed lesson plan is specific enough for another teacher

to read and teach effectively. There should not be any question
regarding what to do or how to do it.

Backward Design Approach: Where are you going with your

students?
Identify Desired Results/Learning Outcome/Essential Question:

After the completion of this lesson, students will have a better

understanding of what a citizen is and the qualities of a good citizen.
Students will be able to recognize when someone is not showing examples
of good citizenship and when someone is showing examples of good
citizenship. Students will be able to answer the question of what makes a
good citizen and what does not.

Ensuring Lesson supports district and state goals

NCSCOS Standards:

K.C&G.1 Understand the roles of a citizen.

Assessment Plan:
I will assess my students learning through different methods of
assessment. I will assess by teacher observation, by walking around
independent work time to observe their work and their understanding of
the learning goals. I will give students an opportunity to turn and talk with
a partner to discuss what it means to be a good citizen and how you show
good citizenship when camping. I will also assess my students through
questioning during the lesson.

Meeting the student where they are:

Prior Knowledge/Connections:
Students will be familiar with what a citizen is and how you show good
citizenship at school and at home. The teacher will connect this prior
knowledge when talking about how to show good citizenship when
camping, The students also have prior knowledge of writing a sentence
and drawing a picture to go with their sentence, during this lesson they
will have a chance to do this with using their knowledge about how to be a
good citizen when camping.
Lesson Introduction/Hook:
Teacher will begin the lesson with a fun read aloud to excite the students
about learning about how to be a good citizen when camping. Teacher will
lead students in questioning throughout the story to focus on ways to be a
good citizen when camping.

Heart of the Lesson/Learning Plans

Differentiation/Same-ation:
Teacher will call on students with different ability levels to model for the
class, this way the students who are at a higher ability level can model
and the lower ability students will be able to observe and gain that
knowledge from their own peers. All students will be exposed to the same
instruction during the first part of the lesson. Students with different
ability levels in writing will show how they write more difficult sentences
while the students who are not as strong in writing will have the option to
write the same sentence the teacher modeled.
Lesson Development:
Teacher will model a read aloud for the students about camping asking the
students questions about how to be a good citizen when camping while
reading the text
Students and teachers will then brainstorm on chart paper different ways we
concluded through the read aloud how to show good citizenship when
camping
Students will come up to the chart to write words using the stretch it out
method
Teacher will then model writing a sentence about being a good citizen when
camping.
Students will return to their seats to write their own sentence about how to
be a good citizen when camping
Students will draw a picture and label their drawing
Students will share with their peers the sentence they wrote and the drawing
they drew
Students will then create a class book by putting together all of their
sentences about being a good citizen when camping.

Teaching Behavior Focus:

My main teaching focus is to align tasks with learning goals. I want students to continue
to strengthen their knowledge about what a good citizen is and the qualities a good
citizen has. To ensure that my teaching behavior focus is met I will ask the students
questions throughout the lesson to ensure that the learning goals are being met.
Follow-Up Activities/Parent Involvement
The students will be encouraged to take what they learned about being a
good citizen and share their knowledge with a peer or a family member.
The teacher will also enforce that you dont have to just be a good citizen
when camping, the teacher will talk about how it is important to be a good
citizen when at school and at home.
